Default Re: Character Names for HUNGARY

I need someone who knows Hungarian to accent the following names correctly:

    Laszlo
    Keresztes Keblovszki
    Baltasar Jakab
    Istvan
    Ulaszlo
    Kalman
    Pioska
    Adelaide

You'll notice these are all the starting characters for Hungary. I need to add their names into our Hungarian names lists if they aren't already there. This will make it easier for the modders to use our files. So, just rewrite the list below with the accent marks in the proper places (and spelled correctly). Thanks!

Keresztes and Keblovszki are right (but these names are fake ones)
Baltazár Jakab (Baltasar is another ****)
    István
    Ulászló (fake)
    Kálmán
Piroska (no such name as Pioska)
    Adelaide (not hungarian anyway)

I just forgot, we can add these names to the lists but alter the names.txt file so that they show up in-game as another name. I.e., we could do this...

    {Adelaide}Busty Babe

...and every time the game hits the name Adelaide in the descr_names.txt file, the character will show up with the name Busty Babe. So, go through this list again if you wish and tell me what in-game name I should attach to each of these "fake" names.

-Keresztes or Kerusztus was a rare name leastwise in written sources.
-Ulászló is the translation of Vladislaw, only Czech kings weared this name (in Hungary) who were also Hungarian kings.
-Adelaide was St. László's wife. But two Hungarian princesses worn the name Adelhaid/Adelheid. These are one name with different writing forms.
-Piroska: her name was originally Pyrisk in the chronicle. Pirisk also good. Piroska is the modern variant.

Thats right probably, but Keresztes was not an important family name. As a matter of fact I never met with this name in sources. Possibnly after 1300 or rather 1400.

-Ulászló is the translation of Vladislaw, only Czech kings weared this name (in Hungary) who were also Hungarian kings.[/QUOTE]

Which is why Ulászló is best to be left out. It is just an incorrect translation of the name Wladyslav, which in hungarian is 'László'.

Chronicles always give many variations for names as there was no spelling in that age. The best is -in my humble opinion- to use the modern form, as Pyrisk sounds very strange to modern ears (after all hungarian female names have very pleasent sondings, which this one lacks, as possibly many old name) and because we use other names in modern form.
(While Géza, András etc can be guessed, István, Imre and other names rarely have correct old hungarian forms)

Just noticed with my pidgin Hungarian, that the names are unaccented. Could a proper Magyar speaking accent the names please?

    Default Re: HUNGARIAN Character Names

The names in the names file have accents (outside of the brackets). The list here is from the descr_names file. Having accents in it will cause problems. In fact, any list of deRougemont did that still has accents in the first post probably should be fixed (Portugal, for example). Accents should only be seen in the names.txt files, and only outside those brackets.

Exactly, that is what I'm doing at the moment, accents, umlauts, ç's, etc. will only be outside the brackets in names.txt.

If some Magyar would be good enough to add the accents, Hungary will be sorted.

He's done most of them already. This is the Hungarian names from the names.txt file (notice names that are outside the brackets):

As you can see, they have accents (I know also because I've played using the Hungarian names and see accents too). This is probably true of most of the factions. Just check through his names.txt; you can't rely on his first posts in the threads, since those names are from the descr_names file.

Missed that, thanks a million, only these and Venice to go until the game is accent-happy.

You're welcome. He's also got the names.txt file organized alphabetically too. He starts with the English, then leaves three empty lines, then France, then three empty lines, and so on. It's pretty easy changing names there that way.
