Though I have read a few stories by Tanizaki, who in the later half of his career was into presenting that era. The trailer has too little sex to be Tanizaki-like, though
Joaquim de Almeida is in this, he plays Friar Domingo i was unaware when he came up on the second episode, it was a pleasant surprise. Also father DellAqua(not a Portuguese name) is also played by a Portuguese actor.Paulino Nunes, he has been in a lot of Hollywood stuff as well.

Im pretty triggered at the moment that they changed Vasco Rodrigues into a Spaniard. How dare they. Also filling John Rhys-Davies shoes is quite the tall order.

Generally im enjoying this so far, the scale seems to be epic, there is more court intrigue then the original, everything looks gorgeous. Although i probably have a preference for the original as narrative and pacing goes.

I am watching the show now too. It's pretty cool ^^
Nice use of CGI too, they imo barely manage to avoid the computer game feel.

Hm, so why would the Japanese think that someone from the other edge of the world, who just came with one ship, would be important enough to somehow be able to ally their own distant country to them?
Because it seems all too... ridiculous?
Maybe the book (?) this is based on handled it differently.

As far as I know (episode 4), no Japanese leader has considered the Englishman a diplomat/emissary of any European power, he has been the only one who has spoken of alliances against the Portuguese. They treat him like a sailor/pirate.

So the word of a sailor/pirate is good enough to think the portuguese have a naval base in Macao? :/

To them, from a origin of information point of looking it is 50% of all outside sources that claim this, i think theyd like to make certain if it were 1%, even if dubious.

Erhem. I like the series, its very brutal and sad at times, but the intrigue is written with broad understandable letters, isnt marinated in self, know when to pick up pace, and when to return the focus to character interaction. Hes quite bellicose for a pilot, querrelsome for one attempting to act his countrys only envoy/a patriot trying to act in his countrys best interest, and for one there to find the culture and make bridges/ make way for trade really slow to read obvious cues. - And even when he understand: dispairing of them. Oh well, REALLY well done, i feel transported there each episode.

I like some elements in the show - style, clothing (I can't really know if it is accurate, but looks nice), sets - but not others. Particularly I don't like the repeated apo mechanes theos (deus ex machina). The englishman keeps getting saved in ridiculous ways, but also that lord when he was hiding and about to be exposed.
    I will keep watching, though

    Also: damn, Oldmeida looks old...

That sells the show for me! Bucho from Desperado for the win.
What is the number to the phone in my ing Spanish galleon anchored at port in Toranaga Shogunate Japan!

Unfortunately I don't have Hulu, the only way to seemingly watch it in the USA, so I'll either have to subscribe or wait until this show reaches another platform like HBO or Amazon (heavily doubt struggling B-tier Netflix would ever pick it up). I like what you guys are saying thus far, though, seems promising. I need something substantially better than the silly unrealistic Jack Ryan series that I'm slogging through right now (sunken cost of already being reeled in by the first season which was decent enough, season 3 is garbage).

LOL. The inclusion of Chris Farley from Beverly Hills Ninja here has me in stitches.

Is Almeida in more than one episode?
