    Pontus' Move
Spend 2 prestige to make an alliance with Sparta and Macedon.

[5] Sparta needed no convincing - they were eagerly awaiting an opportunity to strike at Athens and happily accept the offer of Alliance with the Kingdom of Pontus. (-1 Prestige for Pontus)(+3 prestige for Pontus for alliance)

Meanwhile, Macedon concentrates its efforts on nearby rebels and on completing the construction of its city. [2] It does not appear to be interested in a war at the moment and rejects the Kingdom of Pontus's offer of Alliance. (-1 Prestige for Pontus)

    Alliance Forged

The Kingdom of Pontus has cemented an alliance with Sparta.
+3 Prestige for Pontus. +0 Prestige for Sparta.

prestige as a result of diplomacy)

    WAR!

Sparta declares war on the Seleucid Empire &
Athens in defense of its ally, the Kingdom of Pontus!

Aegean Sea Battle of 261 B.C.

    Sparta vs. Athens
    Dice log

War has broken out in the Peloponnese, and the admiral of the Spartan war fleet patrolling the Aegean Sea receives orders to engage the Athenian war fleet in the vicinity.
Battle commences between the two colossal war fleets.

Both sides utilize the logistics advantage provided from their coastal cities, in addition to their factions' recently improved naval capabilities.
(+2 to battle rolls from coastal cities and Maritime Supremacy edicts)

    2(+2) + 2(+2) + 1(+2) = 11 (Sparta)

    3(+2) + 5(+2) + 3(+2) = 17 (Athens)

A decisive victory for the Athenian fleet! The defeated Spartan fleet is destroyed

The few survivors race back to Sparta to relay this dark news, but they find...

    REBELLION!

The returning Spartan survivors of the disastrous Aegean Sea battle are dismayed to find that Helots have taken this opportunity to rebel against their Spartan overlords!
With the bulk of Sparta's army marching towards Athens, the troublemakers seized weapons, overpowered the diminished garrison, and have taken control of the capital City.
A dark day for Sparta... (-3 Prestige for losing capital)
(Athenian agent's attempt to incite rebellion: [6] Success! the region is now controlled by rebels. +1 next time Athens sends an agent to incite rebellion)

"Well, our new ally sucks. So much for the 'This is Sparta!' boasts they made to my ambassador," King Mithridates the Poisoner says. "Still, this news was entertaining. I love that by sending one man to speak a few words, I have caused so much chaos to break out in Greece." He chuckles. "All it takes sometimes is to add one little ingredient to make a deadly concoction!"

    The Boii

Onomaris then gathered a great army to march northwards into the Taunus mountains to conquer the territory of the northen Taunensii, which reached till the Laugona (Lahn river). The arny was well supplied by nearby Moenus river. They marched to Artaunon, which guarded the entrance to the Taunus mountains. Rich by iron, sliver and lead mining.

Artaunon lied on two mountain ridges. The 1614 feet high Goldgrube and the 1886 high Altenhöfe, between them the Ursel Creek valley.

It filled am area of 320 acres.

The Oppidum was secured with 13-16 feet high pot-slot walls.

Additional it was secured by a big moat to the Ursel Creek valley.

    Six

On the top of the oppidum was an acropolis, a lower town was in the small Ursel Creek valley.

Onomaris laid siege to the Oppidum and let her army begin to redirect the Ursel creek.

    Turn 12 NPC moves

    NPC moves

    Pontic - Seleucid War
Sparta and Athens will both roll a dice for initiative - whoever rolls higher will make their move first.
    • Sparta attempts to recapture Great City of Sparta, which has rebelled.
    • Athens will attempt to capture the Great city of Sparta by sea (using the Ionian fleet). If Sparta acquires the city first they will instead build a fortification in Athens (the capital).

Seleucid Empire attempts to conquer a rebel region bordering the Pontic capital, as indicated in the map below.

    Other NPC moves

Macedon attempts to build a fortification in its southern region bordering Epirus.

All other NPCs attack rebels as indicated in the map below.

(NPC Attacks are indicated in cyan.)

Turn results will be posted shortly.

    Pontic-Seleucid War update

The Kingdom of Pontus, having failed to incite rebellion in the Seleucid Empire, now invades in earnest.
It additionally cements an alliance with Sparta to distract the Athenians from interfering with their conquest of the Seleucid empire.
This causes a war to break out between the rival Greek states of Athens and Sparta!

A sea battle between Sparta and Athens results in the destruction of Sparta's colossal fleet in the Aegean Sea.
And a Helot uprising in the Great City of Sparta has caused the region to fall to rebel control.
The Spartan army turns around and marches home to recapture the Great City and eliminate the traitors...

In the army camp at the newly conquered region, King Mithridates receives news from various messengers. He is disappointed about the agent's failure. Sighing, he says, "We'll just have to fight the Seleucid army there then." When told Athens has allied with the Seleucid Empire, Mithridates shrugs. "Unless they sail their fleet into the Black Sea to attack us or into the Levantine Sea to land an army in Cilicia, I'm not concerned."
One of the king's advisors says, very nervously, "Perhaps it would be wise for us to seek our own allies? Sparta has a large navy and hates Athens. Macedon and Pergamon also--"
"Don't speak to me about Pergamon! They keep expanding east towards us. So they're next after I deal with the Seleucids."

(-2 prestige from diplomacy attempts with NPCs)
(+3 prestige for alliance with Sparta)

[2+1=3] The army finally meets some worthy resistance entering Seleucid territory. They've prepared for your arrival with decent force to repel your troops [2+1=3] The going is a bit slow and your war council estimates you will reach Antioch after the new year, at this rate.

But... something is not right here. Where are the massive Seleucid war beasts, their famed army? This cannot be all the enemy has to offer, can it? None of the contingents you've stationed within your borders have reported sighting the enemy. Perhaps the Seleucid King has holed himself up in his tidy little city...

...You finally receive the answer and it is not reassuring. Scouting parties near Amaseia report sighting massive columns of Seleucid troops in Armenia Minor, rapidly approaching the Kingdom's borders. The slippery bastards have taken the long way around your territory to avoid detection and now threaten your capital city directly!

The Boii first encircle the enemy settlement, cutting them off from all contact with the outside world. Your army then begins the task of redirecting the Ursel creek. The enemy can only watch as their water supply slows to a trickle, as they don't have enough troops to challenge you in direct combat. All the messengers they attempt to send to allies nearby are either captured or killed by your army. There would be no supplies getting in or people leaving until they surrender to you, and all the enemy's defenses are useless against hunger and thirst. With no other choice at hand, the enemy finally submit themselves to the Boii. [6+1=7] Heroic victory! You've conquered the region with an expertly-planned siege and minimum losses. (+2 Prestige)

I had made a mistake in the map for Baktria's conquest last turn (colored in the wrong region). Fixed this turn.

Per Cat's suggestion, I will (soon) be making an "NPC Diplomacy" thread in the social group for players to conduct diplomacy with NPC factions. Edit: NPC Diplomacy thread is live! Please post your Diplomacy attempts with NPC factions in the social group thread (link). Until then, you may continue to conduct NPC diplomacy in this thread.

Also small balance change, for the future I'm reducing the prestige gain from NPC alliances to +2 (instead of the previous +3). Alliances that players make with each other will still grant both parties the full +3 prestige.

    Turn 13 NPC moves

    NPC moves

    Pontic - Seleucid War
Sparta and Athens will both roll dice for initiative - whoever rolls higher will make their move first. GM rolls dice.

    • Sparta's move: Sparta will try to invade the Athenian capital. But if Athens has the initiative and Sparta's city is lost to the enemy, Sparta will instead attempt to reconquer the city.
    • Athens move: Athens will attempt to capture the Great city of Sparta by sea (using the fleet in Ionian Sea).

Kingdom of Pontus (Lord of Cats) and Seleucid Empire (NPC) will both roll dice for initiative - whoever rolls higher will make their move first. GM rolls dice.

    • Seleucid Empire's move: will attack the City of Amaesia, if possible. If this move is not possible due to loss of Armenia Minor, it will instead attack the existing Pontic region bordering Amaesia.

    Other NPC moves

Macedon attempts to build a fortification in its southern region bordering Epirus (again)

Arverni starts building the City of Gergovia in the indicated region.

All other NPCs attack rebels as indicated in the map below.

I thought NPCs could only defend? At this point I'm basically fighting another player.
If NPCs can actively go on the offense, then Pontus will propose peace to Seleucids. If NPCs only defend, then I'll post my next move.

Also, I thought a fortification can't be built in the same region as a great city. So how is Athens building a fortification in the region with its great city? Is it replacing its city?

Chrysippus is appalled at his misfortune. For what wrongs and crimes does he pay so dearly? Anyway, in a sincere show of remorse, the Pharaoh orders all statues of the goddess Fortuna/Tyche to be burned and all dices to be fed to the crocodiles. Poseidonius is tasked with whipping a dozen of random widows and orphans as convenient scapegoats, while Sosibius is urged to convince the locals of the merits of Chrysippus' consolidated fiscal authority.

After reading the rules again, apparently NPCs turn into an aggressive player-like faction when attacked and the attacker will find themselves fighting the Game Master. Between that and the fact the Seleucids have a +1 on their next move while Pontus does not, this is a very bad situation. So, I'll be proposing peace to the Seleucids in the NPC diplomacy thread.

If NPCs can actively go on the offense, then Pontus will propose peace to Seleucids. If NPCs only defend, then I'll post my next move.
Under current rules NPCs will not attack a player unless they are attacked (or alliance called). The Seleucids have been attacked, so now they are also attacking. But we can change this rule to make NPCs easier to deal with.

    First, under the current rules:

    (cut out irrelevant stuff)

    NPC-controlled Factions

Any faction not controlled by a player will be NPC-controlled instead, in order to maintain map balance. New players can still join at any time! When a new player joins the game, they can choose any (one) NPC-controlled faction to take, and that faction will be given to that new player.

    Factions controlled by the NPC:

    • Cannot win the game!
    • Cannot perform Assassination or Rebellion missions against non-NPC players
    • Can engage in diplomacy
    • Plays passively (cannot attack a non-NPC player unless attacked, or an alliance requires them to declare war)

In essence, you may ally yourselves with NPC factions and even coordinate attacks together against other NPCs. And you can expect NPCs to defend themselves and make defensive alliances amongst themselves. They will not war with a real player, unless they are attacked or an alliance requires them to declare war (more on diplomacy later, under "Advanced Rules").

    Additionally:
    • A player can only switch factions if their current faction owns less than 5 regions.
    • An NPC-controlled faction with 75 or more regions cannot be taken over by a player because it is too close to the 100 region victory condition. Again, NPC-controlled factions cannot win the game.

Emphasis mine. Now for my suggestion to make NPCs easier:

    • In a war with Players, NPCs will first prioritize retaking their lost territories first, and only afterwards will begin taking nearby enemy (Player) regions.

In your case Cats, this means the Seleucids will first attempt to take back any territory you've taken, then afterwards attack Pontic territory starting from the South. They won't go straight for the Pontic capital. Does that seem more fair?

There is no Great City in Athen's capital - the city is in the region to it's north (Thebes). Since the Athenian capital contains no structures, yes it can attempt to build a fortification there.

Well, basically I ed up. This being the first war, I didn’t know what to expect. But now I realize I began the war unprepared. So I’ll need to rectify that.

About the rules: I’m good with the changes. Yeah, the NPC should be allowed to attack the player I guess, but if it prioritizes lost regions over the capital region, that’d be fine.

The biggest problem with my current situation that no rule changes can abate is that the Seleucids have a +1 and Pontus does not. So it’s best to pull back and regroup.

    Pontus’ Move
Pontus offers a peace treaty to the Seleucids that includes trading each other’s newly conquered regions. When accepted (NPCs supposedly always accept peace), Pontus will attack the rebel region directly west of its capital region by sea.

Have ye learned nothing yet? The dice gods must have their due!

[5] Fortunately you've passed the persuasion check, and the Seleucid Empire happily accepts the Peace Treaty.

(Pontus spent 1 Prestige to negotiate)

Updated Seleucid Empire move: they will attack Cicilia (the rebels just north-west of its capital). Actually, they will just fortify the region just north of its capital (which was attacked by Pontus last turn)

It sounded like NPCs would accept peace treaties automatically.

Anyway, Pontus is going to be quite the peaceful kingdom for a while. Need to build up prestige and figure out how to gain an advantage over these NPCs.

    The Boii

After the surrender of Artaunon Onomaris donated food to the population. She also invited free- and noblemen from the Boii, Volcae and Taunensii to a big official celebration on Lughnasadh. Her wedding with Segovesos, a boian Epenoi(=Equites), which had become her love during the long siege of Artaunon. And as she got pregnant it was time to legitimize their offspring as royal heirs. It was a great festival. Artaunon was overcrowded with people. The people were literally thirsting for a celebration to forget the past black days of siege.

After the wedding night Onomaris stood up and hugged him from behind, kissed his neck:

"Would you make me proud my love? South of our territory at right bank of the Rhenos till the mouth of the Nicer (=Neckar) river are settling the Toygeni, one of the four pagi of the great Helvetii tribe. Subdue them and secure our southern border. Take Bellovesus and our army with you."

"Yes, my Queen." He kissed her gently, before he put on his armor.

Later on that day he left Artaunon with Bellovesos and the army, leaving Onomaris with a garrison of 3000 warriors behind. Onomaris waved them from the gatehouse caressing her belly.

    Peace Treaty Signed

The Kingdom of Pontus and Seleucid Empire have signed a peace treaty!
They have agreed to trade their recently-conquered territories as part of the agreement.
Neither side may declare war on each other for 10 turns, else they will suffer a Prestige penalty.
(-15 Prestige penalty for Players who break treaties. NPC factions cannot break peace treaties.)

    Greco-Levantine War

This war will henceforth be known as the Greco-Levantine War (previously Pontic-Seleucid war).
The Kingdom of Pontus and Seleucid Empire have agreed to a peace treaty and cease hostilities.
The Seleucid Empire attempts to fortity its territory to discourage future incursions.

Meanwhile, Sparta and Athens continue the war.
Athens, having failed to fortify its capital, now attempts a naval invasion of the Great City of Sparta.
And Sparta has managed to put down the helot rebellion in its Great City and now marches on the Athenian capital...

The Boii are well-rested and inspired by the festivities and the new union between tribes. With Segovesos and Bellovesus at the lead, the bulk of the army marches south to subdue the Toygeni tribe. Each and every small group you encounter quickly submit without much struggle. By the time the main Toygeni settlement is finally reached their leaders have heard of your conquests and are no longer eager for a fight... As ranks upon ranks of Boii warriors emerge from the forest and descend into the river valley, the Toygeni causally greet you as though being integrated into the Boii confederation was their idea and not yours! Well, it's a damn good thing I ended the war. My bad luck has returned.

    ~ Pontus ~

King Mithridates the Poisoner, now age 50, sighs wearily. He was out-manuevered by his archenemy, King Antiochus the Tidy, and then his army was struck by disease whilst trying to conquer Galatia. The king rests his chin on a fist, staring at the gloom of his throne room. To his right sits Crown Princess Zenobia the Cruel, and to his left Prince Mithridates.

Little Xenia, Zenobia's only child, plays with dolls on the floor by Zenobia's feet. Her play involves sticking pins into the dolls and twisting their limbs. Nobody knows who Xenia's father was; Zenobia claims she was visited by a demon in the night and that Xenia is a special Child of Darkness. Since Xenia has flaming red hair, several councilors believe Zenobia had slept with a Celtic warrior. On the other hand, Xenia enjoys biting the servants (her teeth are quite sharp) and enjoys the taste of blood.

The councilors, all standing around the chamber, debate different courses of action. They come to a consensus that since the attack to the west had failed, they should instead attack to the east. Mithridates rolls his eyes, then leans back. "And who do you suggest should lead this attack?"
The councilors shuffle nervously. "We thought that your majesty and Prince Mithridates would--"
"No. We have been cursed. I'll not lead an army until I know the curse has worn off."
    "Oh, well, then--"
A servant runs into the chamber and bows to Mithridates. "A warrior has come to request an audience with you, sire. He is a Balt, but represents only himself."
    "He's a what?"
"A Balt, sire. Somebody from the Baltic lands."
"Oh." Mithridates shrugs. "Send him in."
A giant of a man wearing a bear's pelt stomps into the chamber, with a massive club swung over his shoulder. "I am Kull the Skull Crusher!"
Mithridates and Zenobia both arch an eyebrow while Prince Mithridates' jaw drops. "Did you... kill that bear?" the prince asks in awe.
"Aye, Kull smashed its skull and wears its skin!"
The prince whispers, "Father, I've discovered I'm bisexual."
"Keep it to yourself," Mithridates says.
    "Ew," Zenobia whispers.
"What do you mean 'ew", sister? You're bisexual."
"Yeah, but I only lie with beautiful people."
    "Kull is--"
"Silence!" Mithridates shouts. Then to Kull, he says, "Why have you come to my palace?"
Kull lifts his club high in the air. "To fight for the Poison King!"
Mithridates nods. "Alright. I'm placing you in command of the army that will attack the Armenians to the east."
Kull grins. "Kull will smash their skulls!"
Spluttering, one of the councilors says, "Sire, this is most unwise. Has this... Kull any experience with commanding?"
"Yes!" Kull shouts. "Kull commands his arms!" he says, using his arms to swing his club in demonstration.
After recovering from his shock, the councilor says, "I meant have you ever commanded other men?"
"Yes! Kull has commanded many men to get out of his way."
The councilor is about to protest again, but Mithridates raises a hand for silence. "Kull will conquer that eastern region for us."

    Pontus' Move
Attack the region to the southeast that borders Lake Van.
