How can you view custom models in the assembly kit variant editor

Hi all

been away so a long time and very rusty

currently compiling lots of mods together for my own personal use and I'm editing the units in them. However i have seen on the workshop people have weapons and armour mods clearly in the variant editor program but when i extract variant meshes in the editor they are always invisible.

As a follow on is there anyway i can just load a pack file directly into the Assembly kit?

the files have to be in working data folder.
