Comparatives & Superlatives
Majority and minority comparatives – Comparativi di maggioranza e minoranza

In order to compare two or more elements, we normally use più di (more than +) for the comparisons of majority and meno di (less than -) for the comparisons of minority:

“più/meno + adjective + di + nouns / personal pronouns”

MAJORITY
+ Martina è più simpatica di Luisa (Martina is nicer than Luisa)
+ Luca è più alto di me (Luca is taller than me)
+ Il cane è più fedele del gatto (The dog is more faithful than the cat)
+ Il computer è più moderno della macchina da scrivere (The computer is more modern than the typewriter)

MINORITY
– Luisa è meno simpatica di Martina (Luisa is less nice than Martina)
– Io sono meno alto di Luca (I'm shorter than Luca)
– Il gatto è meno fedele del cane (The cat is less faithful than the dog)
– La macchina da scrivere è meno moderna del computer (The typewriter is less modern than the computer)

We normally use più che (more than) or meno che (less than) to compare two or more elements belonging to all the other cases:

“più/meno + adjective + che + adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions”

Luca è più/meno alto che bello (Luca is more / less tall than handsome)
Il computer è più/meno utile che difficile da usare (The computer is more / less useful than difficult to use)
Mi piace più/meno cucinare che mangiare (I like cooking more / less than eating)
Giocare a tennis è più/meno divertente che studiare (Playing tennis is more / less fun than studying)
Il clima in Sicilia è più/meno mite che in Lombardia (The climate in Sicily is more / less mild than in Lombardy)
Anna è più/meno gentile con Tatiana che con me (Anna is more / less kind to Tatiana than to me)
Mio fratello è più/meno affezionato a mio padre che a mia madre (My brother is more / less fond of my father than my mother)

Comparative of quantity – Comparativo di quantità
We express comparative of quantity with the construction:

“Più … che” (more ... than)

Leggo più giornali che libri (I read more newspapers than books)
In quel paese ci sono più poveri che ricchi (In that country there are more poor than rich)
Bevo più tè che caffè (I drink more tea than coffee)
Lucia ha più vestiti che scarpe (Lucia has more clothes than shoes)

Comparative of equality – Comparativo di uguaglianza
When we want to express the same quantity, we use the construction:

“Tanto … quanto” / “Così … come” ("As...as" / "to be .... like")

Quel cane è fedele quanto un gatto (That dog is as faithful as a cat)
Luca e Mattia sono studiosi quanto noi (Luca and Mattia are as studious as we are)
Pietro è alto come Leo (Pietro is as tall as Leo)
Lucia è magra come me (Lucia is thin like me)

Sometimes adjectives can be forerun by tanto, if with the second element of comparison we use quanto:

Leonardo è (tanto) grasso quanto basso (Leonardo is (as) fat as he is short)
Il computer è (tanto) utile quanto costoso (The computer is (as) useful as it is expensive)
Marta è (tanto) timida quanto Lisa (Marta is (as) shy as Lisa)

Otherwise, adjectives can be forerun by così, if with the second element of comparison we use come:

Marta è (così) timida come Lisa (Marta is (as) shy as Lisa)
Voi siete (così) giovani come noi (You are (so) young like us)
Gli studenti della tua classe sono (così) diligenti come noi (The students in your class are (as) diligent as we are)

The relative superlative – Il superlativo relativo

The relative superlative indicates a person or thing’s quality expressed to the maximum or the minimum level, in relation to a group.

The relative superlative of majority is expressed by il più di, meanwhile the relative superlative of minority is expressed by il meno di.

“(Article) + noun + più /meno + adjective + (di/fra-tra)”

Questo è il ragazzo più bravo di tutti. (This is the best guy of all)
Giorgio è il più alto tra i ragazzi della mia classe (Giorgio is the tallest of the boys in my class)
Roma è la più grande fra le città d’Italia (Rome is the largest of the cities in Italy)
Giove è il più grande pianeta del sistema solare. (Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system.)
Mattia è il meno alto del gruppo (Mattia is the least tall of the group)
Siena è la città meno sporca d’italia (Siena is the least dirty city in Italy)
Questo ragazzo è il meno bravo tra quelli della sua classe (This guy is the least good of those in his class)
Laura è la studentessa meno diligente della classe (Laura is the least diligent student in the class)

Pay attention: the relative superlative expresses an opinion that takes the subjunctive!
Questo è il più bel libro che abbia mai letto (This is the best book I've ever read)
Luca è il ragazzo più simpatico che conosca (Luca is the nicest guy I know)
La torta della nonna è la più buona che abbia mai mangiato (Grandma's cake is the best I've ever eaten))

The absolute superlative – Il superlativo assoluto

The absolute superlative indicates the quality expressed to the maximum and absolute grade, independent to any comparison:

“Adjectives – the last vowel + issimo/issima/issimi/issime”

Giove è un pianeta grandissimo = molto grand(e) (Jupiter is a huge planet = very large)
Questo caffè è amarissimo = molto amar(o) (This coffee is very bitter)
Siena è bellissima = molto bell(a) (Siena is very beautiful)
La grammatica italiana è difficilissima = molto difficil(e) (Italian grammar is very difficult)
Marta e Luisa sono altissime = molto alt(e) (Marta and Luisa are very tall)
Laura e Silvia sono elegantissime = molto elegant(i) (Laura and Silvia are very elegant)
Questi ragazzi sono bravissimi = molto brav(i) (These guys are very good)
Questi libri sono interessantissimi = molto interessant(i) (These books are very interesting)

Orally, we can also express it joining the adjective with another one, which will strengthen it:
Oggi ho lavorato tutto il giorno senza pausa: sono stanca morta! = stanchissima/molto stanca (Today I worked all day without a break: I'm dead tired! = very tired)
The owner of that pool villa also has a sailboat and two other homes in the Maldives, he's filthy rich! = very rich / very rich
Matteo è innamorato cotto di Giulia = innamoratissimo/molto innamorato (Matteo is in love with Giulia = very much in love)
Stamattina è iniziato a piovere e non avevo l’ombrello, sono arrivata al lavoro bagnata fradicia = bagnatissima/molto bagnata (IThis morning it started to rain and I didn't have an umbrella, I arrived at work soaking wet = very wet)
Brad Pitt è bello da morire! = è bellissimo/è molto bello (Brad Pitt is beautiful to die for! = is very beautiful)
Il proprietario di quella villa con piscina ha anche una barca a vela e altre due case alle Maldive, è ricco sfondato! = ricchissimo/molto ricco (The owner of that pool villa also has a sailboat and two other homes in the Maldives, he's filthy rich! = very rich)

Or adding prefixes like: arci- / stra-
Il proprietario di quella villa con piscina ha anche una barca a vela e altre due case alle Maldive, è straricco! = ricchissimo/molto ricco (The owner of that pool villa also has a sailboat and two other houses in the Maldives, he is super rich! = very rich)
Matteo è strainnamorato di Giulia = innamoratissimo/molto innamorato (Matteo is very in love with Giulia = very much in love)
Brad Pitt è arcifamoso = famossissimo/molto famoso (Brad Pitt is arch-famous = very famous)
