Latin for Crimson is carminus From the extended version..carmesinus, comes Carmine, a compound meaning (red dye) produced by a Worm.

Purpura is latin for Purple, Genitive purpurae, femine 1st declension word.
I can give the other inflections and genitive if you like?
purpura is produce by the blood of a sea snail very very expensive i the old days.

The colour of the Roman Army is actually RED/crimson, or carminus, Only the Emporer wore Purpura. It is considered regal. and too expensive for any one else, even the infamous preatorian guard wore carminus.
The Emporer's went to great lenghts to protect the producing of the purpura silk, exclusively for the imperial family.

    Porphyrogenites?

    you mean "Porphyrogenitus" or "porphyrogenitos".

Porphyrogenitos (πορφυρογέννητος) — "born-in-the-purple": Emperors wanting to emphasize the legitimacy of their ascent to the throne appended this title to their names, meaning they were born in the delivery room of the imperial palace (called the Porphyra because it was panelled with slabs of purple marble), to a reigning emperor, and were therefore legitimate.

Why did the imperial palace have purpura marble? because it was built of marble with an unusaly blue-ish purple colour. Hence the famous blue haze.

The back of his coin by Manuel I Comnenus bears his title, porphyrogenitos.

PS: I would love to see the East Roman Empire with Musketeers like the spanish have, and the Cannons. As a normal progression, as i usually play them when i need to fight on three fronts for fun.

When i want it nice and easy i go up and Play England.

don't forget the folder Wolf's Things also.

EDIT: the textures need to be placed directly in the data folder of the installation (so not the folder of your mod).
if you want to be sure of the result, and if you don't want to turn crazy, my advice is to put all files of your mod in the mod folder AND the main data folder...
Don't forget to delete the strings.bin files if you have modified a file of the text folder.
Don't forget to delete map.rwm if you have modified the map... (in Medieval Total war\my_mod\data\world\maps\base\ )
If you just run the exe and install to the path that it defaults to you should not of had to go through those steps, that is unless you installed MTW2 to a custom location. It is good to see you got it working though.

Thanks for the info Fenir, as for other units I do not plan to release anything included in this mod at least that has additional units included.

Currently working on all original shields and banners, the peasants will be tackled next and I will go back to the armored byzantine infantry after that as I want to make a few changes to make them slightly more historical.

I noticed something wrong with the K&K-included battle.model file. You basically include the Knight mail units, but not the regular, so you end up getting the knight_textures for all units, instead of the knight textures for knights and the regular modified textures for spearmen and the like

Of all the Byzantine units Whitewolf, what percentage of them would you say that you've completed or are nearing completion on?

Well all in all I would say 20% the ones that I have already released were mainly just to put something decent out there and start getting feedback and ideas on where to go for each unit. ATM I am doing alot of reading up on where the Byz soliders came from, and what kind of armor would be most historical. For example the units of Byzantine infantry were historically one of the few military units that was made up of citizens, or so I have read from various sources. I am also limited because I can not do any 3D modeling in MTW2 yet. So I am simply trying to make do with what I have.

@ Ahiga I tested with the modeldb file I posted with the mod and I do not seem to have any issue with the kmail and the regualar mail, it seems to work fine to me. If anyone else has this issue feel free to chime in here.

So for example, armored spearmen with 0 upgrades, or sergeants with 3 upgrades, will feature the leather hoodie that is a part of en_lmail_hmail?

I'm looking at your code and for example:

    armour_ug_models Armored_Sergeants, Armored_Sergeants_ug1

    armored_sergeants 1 4 61 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_lod0.mesh 121 61 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_lod1.mesh 900 61 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_lod2.mesh 2500 61 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_lod3.mesh 6400 9 7 england 73 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/textures/EN_kmail_kmail_england.texture 72 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/textures/EN_kmail_kmail_normal.texture 53
This is kmail, or what was for the knights in Knights and Knaves:

This is the lmail/hmail, or what was for the knaves (Commoners) in Knights and Knaves:

Now that code above for english armored sergeants shows it uses the kmail, what was for knights in k&k.

Yet if I do a search for their upgraded counterpart, it uses the lmail_hmail:

    armored_sergeants_ug1 1 4 65 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_ug1_lod0.mesh 121 65 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_ug1_lod1.mesh 900 65 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_ug1_lod2.mesh 2500 65 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/armored_sergeants_ug1_lod3.mesh 6400 9 7 england 73 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/textures/EN_Lmail_Hmail_england.texture 72 unit_models/_Units/EN_Lmail_Hmail/textures/EN_Lmail_Hmail_normal.texture 53
It seems like I did something beforehand (no units had the leather hoodie), but now it seems like there are cases where units skip the light mail stage and go straight to heavy mail, such as with this English spearmen. They go from a knight's heavy mail to upgrading to a knave's heavy mail. Otherwise you are right, I do see units using the 'knave' version of mail instead of the knight.

Thank you for having made a version compatable with K&k, since I was having a hard time deciding between your byzantines and K&K before I reinstalled it. However, as the english spearmen code mentions, there seems to be some sort of an issue, unless you meant for them to have heavy mail from the start?

The sergeants in K&K v0.3 share the light mail texture with the knights and the heavy mail with the knaves. I wanted the sergeant to have a different look than the militiamen. In v0.9 the sergeants will get their own texture.

My tribute for your great work ! You and Burrek are the best out there in that what you do. I was getting invaded by some purple guys who looked a bit strange and now, it was like "Omg those are Byzantine Infantrymen!" . Great work. Let Burrek do the Western work and you the Eastern. Cause it looks an bit odd if my grand-looking burrek Knights attack those vanilla Eastern guys .

    Yeah see, joedreck agrees,

Byzantines need SMG's and Light Machine guns, with tripods avalible, perhaps a few tanks, and the trucks, don't forget the trucks.

Oh and got to have a fighter and a bomber

    And maybe some....... and some.......

Atomic weapons, are a must :hmmm:

    hihi,

    no.

i need only the files for the 2 unit types from the picture, where are the shield textures.

it could be, that the files are in the folder "attachmentsets". the file are calling similarly like this one: "final heater special_hre_diff"

i would like to create new shields for the two units

i don't have enough space on my hdd. i have many shields designs and i would try to make some of them.
and perhaps there are nice enough for a mod, which someone make for byzantine

Man, I don't know what to say. THANK YOU for saving the Byzantine Empire for many of us. In vanilla they looked like they should have been sponsored by Nike or Reebok, particularly the fully upgraded dismounted Byzantine lancers. With your mod, Varangian Guard, Kataphracts, Latinkon, etc. look amazing, and made the faction go from unplayable to my new favorite (as you see by my name I wanted this to be the case from the beginning, but the glowing purple was unbearable).

I realize this is an initial release, but my only suggestion would be a more textured look on some of the leather/cloth covering the back of the neck (coming from under the helmet) on units like the Byzantine Guard Archers. Currently they look a bit plain, stretched, or smeared.

Please don't take this suggestion as me being critical or ungarteful, believe me, I am extremely grateful for the work you have done, it makes all the difference. Sorry I don't have any useful references for you .

Thank you again, can't wait to see your future efforts.
