Your racing certainty is correct, afraid the other responses aren't. The use of the Google search engine may well be needed to answer possibly 2 of the questions, as the answers are not be necessarily obvious.

    2 & 4 are 100% correct, 3 is almost there, but 1 & 5 are wrong.

    Clearly time for clues:

    1. An aggressive Prussian commander.

    3. Derived from Duc de Raguse but what event led to the verb?

    5. During the Revolutionary & Napoleonic Wars - at some point under the control of one or the other of the Ottomans, Russians, French and British.

1 is almost certainly Blucher then, and from 5... is Corfu one of them?

    No idea about 3 though.

    1. is certainly Blucher.

    3. What did he do in 1814?

    5. Does include Corfu - but am happy to accept name of the group of islands rather than all of the individual ones as that may prove, in hindsight quite difficult.

    3. Marmont was accused of betraying Napoleon, as he refused to defend Paris, believing that victory was impossible. Napoleon was astonished by his behaviour, as he was a Marshal owning his rank to the Emperor, so, in French, the verb "ragouser" has the meaning of "betray", since, as it has already been mentioned, Marmont was the duke of Ragousa.

    5. The islands of the Ionian Sea:
    Corfu,
    Cephalonia,
    Ithaca,
    Leucas,
    Zacynthus,
    Cythera (not sure),
    Paxoi (again not sure).

These were the only questions I knew, in the first place.

    1) Who's biography did Sir Francis Bacon write? Henry VIII I'll guess, as Thomas more did Henry VII.
    2) Which Queen consort of England was descended from King Stephen of England? Hmm Stephen of Blois allowed the throne to descend to the naughty Plantagenets, and IIRC he had only female issue: it was a thorny problem so I don't think they'd let his descendent near the throne for centuries. My guess is it was Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother (wife of George VI).
    3) How many games did Gary Kasparov win during his title loss against Vladamir Kramchek? None?
    4) Tiberius Julius was a name used by many Bospheran Kings from the first century AD for several centuries, which famous Roman are they descended from? Julius Caesar left bastards all over the Mediterranean, but they tended to be liquidated. The name Tiberius occurs in several gens such as the Gracchi, so I will guess Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus as ancestor to whom they appealed in their names.

    Hi All

    Let us revive this thread?

If it is OK, I can add two questions :

    1) A particular act in a particular Battle in Europe was immortalized by a famous philosopher - Guard Regiments from one of the armies doffed their hats to salute the opposing force and offered the opponent to fire first...the opposing army saluted back and counter offered the same to the former.
Note : This doesn't go on to prove that similar acts were entirely uncommon in the era but the account of this episode by the famous Philosopher has remained immortal

Name the Battle and the Philosopher

    2) A famous General of the Early Modern period, was honoured after his death at the battlefield by his worthy adversary, one of the greatest generals of his age as well - by constructing a memorial at the site with a particular inscription. The worthy adversary, one of the highest nobles of his land, had a chequered life as well where he would also see a brief spell where he ended up being a high ranking leader of a foreign army against his Kingdom of birth

Name the Famous General, the Worthy adversary and the Inscription
