The goal is to make units more distinct between factions by creating unique entries for common unit types with new textures and catered loadouts.
Some new units are added, but the intention is that vanilla balance is maintained.
This is still in the early stages of development, and versions will be released a faction at a time. First, I'm working on Syracuse.
Insignio Vires is my attempt to make each faction within a culture feel unique and worthy of a playthrough. Not only that, but many poleis have unique incentives in the form of AoR units, giving more opportunity for roleplay.
I accomplish this through a workflow with strong intentions:
Extensive Research - What sets a polis apart from their neighbors? Things like symbology, history, cultural and industrial focuses. How have artists in the past and present differentiated them?
Critical Thinking - There are many gaps in our knowledge of this time, and so I've done my best to stick with reasonable inferences and artistic license. There's no way of knowing how accurate my depictions are, but they attempt to play with what we know in a stylish way. Some definite inaccuracies remain, such as the use of faction uniform colours.
Dedicated Artistry - Each new texture is treated with the same standard of quality, the highest I can muster without creating entirely new assets.
Every city is given the time and attention of this workflow applied to them.
