Icon5 Wiki Poll 1: "What is your favourite Rome 2 Cultural Group and why?"

Hello and welcome to the first in an occasional series of polls by the Wiki Team, looking at different aspects of Rome 2.

Our goal is to expand the Rome 2 section of the wiki with new and interesting content. By voting in these polls, you'll be helping us to decide which areas to be focusing on first, and by commenting you'll be providing valuable information to help in the creation of new pages for the wiki or updating existing ones. Whether you're a seasoned hand or a new player, all voters and commenters are welcome.

The first areas we're looking at are Factions, Cultures and Cultural Groups. In Rome 2 every faction is part of a specific Culture, and every Culture is part of one of four broad Cultural Groups. We'll be looking at Cultures and Factions in future polls, but for now our focus is on the four Cultural Groups. Romans, Barbarians, Hellenics and Easterners.

Which leads us to our first question:

"What is your favourite Rome 2 Cultural Group and why?"

For reference, the Cultures included in each Cultural Group are:

    1. Romans
This includes Rome, the Divided Roman Empire, the Italian Civilisations and Italic Tribes Cultures.

    2. Barbarians
This includes the Gallic, Germanic, Britannic, Iberian, Balkan, Nomadic and Nuragic Tribes Cultures.

    3. Hellenics
This includes the Successor Kingdoms, Greek States, Black Seas Colonies and Carthage Cultures.

    4. Easterners
This includes the Eastern Empires and Desert Kingdoms Cultures.

There's a lot about a Cultural Group that can make you like them. From unit rosters, to campaign mechanics, to appearance, to map location, to neighbours and anything else you can think of. Whatever it is, we'd like to hear about it.

And we'd also like to hear what you don't like about playing a Cultural Group. What are their drawbacks, their weaknesses, the things that other players may find helpful to know when playing them?

    A word on mods:
Mod users are also welcome to take part in the poll and contribute to the discussion, but the Wiki team asks that if anything in your comments is mod-specific, you clearly state this when posting please. Thank you.

With your help, we're hoping to expand the Rome 2 section of Total War Centre Wiki to be a more useful resource for everyone.

    All the Best,

    Welsh Dragon.

It's Hellenics for me. It's reassuring to have a strong defensive wall of hoplites and I enjoy the challenge of using cavalry or skirmishers (or both) for killing power. Also, it's fun to make enemies into client states, levying units in their regions to fill gaps in my roster. I enjoy factions in other cultural groups too and was tempted to vote Barbarians, but I've particularly enjoyed campaigns as Carthage, Cimmeria and Pergamon.

I have always been fascinated by Rome and its culture, army, infrastructure works, etc. Took my first Latin class in HS and immediately became obsessed with the Roman army.

Barbarians, I've been a huge fan of Thrace for some time. Thracian rhomphaia's and the mystery surrounding the exact nature of their warfare (at least to me) draws me to reading about them.

Hellenics for me. I'm quite fond of Romans too, but I very much like the diversity and city-client state setup, plus Hoplites and Pikes. Who doesn't like Pikes?

For me it is the Hellenic group as well, though at other times I would definitely go for the Romans. The reasons are purely my historical interests; the history of the Hellenistic Age is just so fascinating...

The Easterners, and here the Persians in particular, are quite interesting, too, with Barabarians taking the fourth spot. As regards Barbarians, well, apart from the fact that they are Barbarians, there is just so little we know about them in comparison with the other cultural groups, mostly due to the lack of any written accounts produced by themselves. Hence the lack of any particular interest on my part.

    Rome!

Hellenics. For various reasons: the aesthetic of the armies and architecture, the effectiveness and the idea behind the phalanx, the culture and art, the sheer inventiveness, the fact that a small group of citystates managed to fend off the Persian empire. -edit- I didn't even realise it also included the Carthaginians. That's a nice bonus. ;o)

My second choice would actually be the barbarians. Mostly because I like peoples I didn't/do not know all that much about with a different style of warfare. In particular the Daco-Thracians and the Iberians.

Third would come the easterners.. mostly because I really like the Armenians.

Hellenic, specifically Carthage. I love the thought of rewriting history and defeating Rome in the Punic Wars. Also Hannibal was one of the best commanders in history. Also their unit roster is quite diverse.

Great to see people voting and sharing useful information on the Cultural Groups. And if you haven't already, what are you waiting for!

As for my own choice, it's a tough pick but I had to go with Barbarians. I just really enjoy playing them. Their rosters of generally low armour / high attack & charge bonus units encourage aggressive play, and force me to operate outside my comfort area (I'm usually a fairly defensive player.) They also tend to be fairly tight rosters that specialise in one or two things, which I find adds to the variety because playing a different barbarian faction brings with it different strengths and weaknesses.

They're also often ideally suited for using ambushes, which is good as they can quite often be the underdogs in a fight too, especially early on. They often start small, with just one or two regions. But you can take that and build great empires with them. The confederation mechanic also lends it self to my less aggressive campaign play, often allowing you to expand territory without having to conquer everything, and adding to your military in the process.

If I had a second pick, it would probably be Hellenics, especially the more hybrid ones of the Black Seas and Successor Kingdoms. Being able to build upon a good solid Hoplite/Pike wall gives your armies a strong backbone, and with so many Greeks spread about it's easier to spread your own cultural influence as there's already some there.

Romans can be fun, especially in some of the other campaigns like Caesar in Gaul or Empire Divided. But I tend to find with their huge rosters and other advantages it can get a bit boring, as they have an answer to every question, and I like to be put in situations where I need to get creative with tactics and strategy.

And Easterners I've never really given much of a go (except Masaesyli, I loved playing them.)

    All the Best,

    Welsh Dragon.

    EDIT:

And don't forget, you need to vote in the poll itself for your votes to be counted. To ensure a fair poll, I unfortunately can't take votes from the comments.

This poll will close on Friday May 24, 2019 at 11:12 AM (BST,) so there's only a few days left to get those votes in. And even if you've already voted, why not add some tips or features you like about your chosen Cultural Group to the thread, helping your fellow players by sharing you wisdom.

Used to be Romans, but now I'm more suited to the Easterners, restoring Khemetic Glory and ultimately creating the Persian Empire once again!

I mean, the game is called ROME II, so the Romans of course. I find the interactions of all those ancient civilizations interesting, so I'm actually interested in everything. But mostly Rome still

I was going to do Hellenics, as my favorite campaigns have been as Hellenic factions, but in retrospect the most challenge I've received and most fun I've had customizing armies have been with the Roman factions. While very few Total War experiences can match the splendor of a perfect Pike Wall holding the line and blocking chokepoints, I am completely in love with the auxiliary system of Rome, and I find its tech tree and skill trees the most balanced of the four (Eastern/Hellenic are the easiest trees, Barbs can be quite difficult to manage).

I will say, though, that the Barbarian factions and Parthia have been the most challenging I've played in the GC.

Wiki Poll 1 Cultural Groups Results

So, after a month of voting and discussion the first of our Wiki Polls comes to a close. And while it was a very close run thing, we have a winner!

    Congratulations Hellenics!

The Hellenics beat out the mighty Roman Empire by just a single vote (10 to 9,) and in doing so highlighted one of the things I love about Total War. The chance to change history.

The reasons given for choosing the Hellenics varied, but included their history and culture; the presence of iconic figures such as Alexander the Great and Hannibal; the aesthetic appearance of their units and buildings; variety provided by their many factions and city states; enjoyable campaign experiences; and more pragmatic factors such as the power of Hoplites and Pikes in game, and the effectiveness of Hammer & Anvil tactics when combined with often powerful cavalry and skirmishers in support.

The Romans may have come second this day, but they still took over a third of the vote. Their history and culture seems to be popular here too, but as does the might of their Legions. And their unique auxiliary mechanic was worth a mention as well.

With the first two taking nearly three quarters of the votes, it was left to the Easterners and the Barbarians to fight over the remaining votes. And in this, Eastern ingenuity prevailed, but again by only a single vote (4 to 3.)

And an honourable last place went to my personal favourites, the Barbarians. But hey, I always did tend to choose the underdog!

So what does this mean for the Wiki?

Well, while the poll was running the Wiki Team have been hard at work on improvements for the TWC wiki, some of which you can already see (for example, the new Three Kingdoms section.)

My own area has been Rome 2 (with a brief foray into Warhammer to add the “Warhammer Races By Playstyle” page, based upon the work of Reddit user Reddit User “sobrique”) and to that end I've been putting together some prototype pages and looking at what areas we need to cover.

In the near future we should have a new Cultural Groups page for Rome 2 up, covering the major differences between them and highlighting aspects, such as general playstyles and rosters, that will hopefully be useful for players new and old. Your votes and contributions have been very helpful for this, confirming some areas I wanted to cover, but also highlighting some factors I hadn't considered. Thank you.

This poll has also given us the basis for our next Wiki Poll, which will be taking a closer look at the Cultures that make up the Hellenic Cultural Group.

With four Cultures and over a third (13/36) of the Grand Campaigns playable factions hailing from this group, there's a lot to cover and I expect we'll see a tough fight once again. But what would you expect, from peoples that gave us the likes of Hannibal Barca, Alexander the Great, Leonidus, and Philetaerus of Pergamon?

No ETA yet, but watch this space.

Speaking of polls, if you're favourite didn't win this time out, don't worry. While the poll results will help guide us in the near future, we still intend to expand upon the Romans, Barbarians and Easterners too. And future polls will also be looking at those varied peoples, so there will be plenty for everyone in the coming months.

Finally if you'd like to help with the Wiki, whether it be by joining the Staff or just by contributing to a page or two, for on your favourite faction, unit or game, please do. Our trained operators (by which I mean my boss makanyane ) are awaiting your call (PM.)

    All the Best,

    Welsh Dragon.
