Thread: [Public Vote] Turns per Year

Default [Public Vote] Turns per Year

    Salve citizens!

It has been many months since any large update for Ancient Empires, although you may have seen interspersed patch notes with smaller fixes. Rest assured that one of the largest (if not the largest) updates as of yet is in production. Official update notes will hit the forums in the next couple of days, including an estimated release date.

Until then, we'd like to involve the community in a decision that has been subject to some controversy, namely that of 2 vs 4 default turns per year (TPY) for the base mod. There were reasons for the shift to 2, but at this point we feel like the community has had time to get familiar with both approaches and would therefore like to extend an invitation to vote on the subject.

    Advantages of 2 TPY

    • Fits the time frame better (202 BC to ~100 AD)
    • Ideal to "cycle" between rulers; more dynastic gameplay. Ruler Traits suit this iteration

    Advantages of 4 TPY

    • Seasonal variation and planning optimal (pronounced seasonal effects)
    • More time for character development (skill tree, traits)

I ran out of ideas here, but both lists can clearly be expanded

I prefer 4 turns per year, simply because autumn and spring would give 2 mild seasons for war or saving money/food. Right now I find it a little too harsh in terms of straight up not having food or money during winter turns ( specially for small factions). Although I always prefer 12 or more turns per year, if 4 is the maximun Im all for it.

2TPY, I'd like to actually unlock the Imperial Legionaires in a campaign.

You could make it 4 turns per year and release a submod for 2tpy

off the top of my head:

    • enables proper campaign timing/cycle: spring - start of a campaign; summer-autumn - actual campaigning; winter - into winter quarters - replenishment/recruitment for the following spring.
    • utilises vanilla season rotations
    • adds some realism

i would love to see you guys going for 4 tpy. was wishing you'd do it from day one.
absolutely love this mod and was planning to start a historical letsplay but the fact that 4 tpy was somewhat destabilising the game iirc, (unlike 2 tpy) held me back. would be great if 4 tpy went official. appreciate you taking that into consideration.

Same for me. Definately 4 tpy.
It's just feels natural. Coresponding with seasons.
Contemporary submod is still a valid solution, but movement in it is off - way to easy to blitzkrieg evetything.
Needs to be adjusted in official release (if voted for ofc) into a slow grind to go with the theme of the mod.
Loving the mod. Many thanks to the team
