TIL you can’t joke about wishing your opponents can’t vote
What debacle in Georgia? The fact that Abrams is undermining our democracy by not accepting the election results and two senators are openly saying “If she doesn’t win, it’s rigged.” Member when Democrats were outraged at the notion Trump might not accept the result of the 2016 election? I member.

Sure the Republican Party is a joke, but so is the Democrat party. Up until moments ago, they had a 2020 front runner who only got famous for being a porn star’s lawyer that echoed the NPC talking point of “Orange man bad”
EDIT: And now there’s a Democrat Congressman calling for gun confiscations and wanting to use nukes if anyone defies the government

    Second look at Nancy Pelosi?

    http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/...bottom-80.html

This week, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi unveiled a list of new procedural rules that her caucus intends to implement when the next Congress is seated. Most of these measures are unobjectionable “good government” reforms. But one of them would create a new — and all-but-insurmountable — obstacle to the passage of many of the policies that the Democratic Party claims to support.

The rule, proposed by Pelosi and Massachusetts representative Richard Neal, would “require a three-fifths supermajority to raise individual income taxes on the lowest-earning 80 percent of taxpayers.”...

Alas, there are several problems with this argument. For one thing, while progressives are committed to increasing the discretionary income of the bottom 80 percent, that does not necessarily mean keeping their tax rates frozen at historically low levels. Currently, for much of the American middle class, health-insurance premiums function as a steadily rising tax. A bill that required those households to pay a new, smaller monthly sum to the government — so as to fund a single-payer system that would actually reduce their cost of living by delivering radically cheaper health-care services — could hardly be called regressive. And the same can be said for legislation establishing universal child care, paid family leave, or any other program aimed at easing the middle class’s financial burdens by dramatically expanding the public sector’s ambitions. Equating support for middle-class families — with opposition to increasing their tax rates — is a conservative project, which Democrats have no business advancing. If the party wishes to establish structural barriers to policies that would hurt the middle class, why not require a three-fifths majority to cut Medicaid, Medicare, or Social Security?...

All this would be a bit less problematic if the Democratic Party had overcome its allergy to deficit spending (and/or accepted Modern Monetary Theory as its personal truth). But it hasn’t: In addition to forbidding tax increases on the bottom 80 percent, Pelosi has vowed to honor the “pay as you go” rule, which requires the House to fully finance any and all new government spending.

Taken together, these two requirements could make Medicare for All impossible to pass out of the House.

Health insurance is a private company thing. Is that thing arguing that private companies are taxing citizens?

In a way. For a citizen, is there a meaningful difference between high taxation and essentials provided cheap or for free, and low taxation with high prices for essentials on a monopolized market like US healthcare?

See, that logic don't fly. The last time SCOTUS ruled anything having to do with insurance was a tax was when people that didn't have insurance specifically paid the government a tax for it. And weren't paying the insurance company for the insurance.

There's a lot wrong with how America does their healthcare. But saying its a tax is...ing wrong. When you all want to actually set up a government provided system for people actually paying taxes(remember, people getting medicaid already aren't paying jack for taxes) so this supermajority requirement isn't going to play the system much but to make it easier to tax the rich insofar as House vote requirements.

That only happens when the Republicans screw up so bad they lose the Senate as well. And when that happens the rules can change again. With McConnell running things he'd just table every bill like that sent from the House just like every ACA Repeal bill that Reid tabled.

Realism is a great thing to have on your mind when considering these things dude.

After how NJ re-elected a corrupt senator and two Democratic anti semites were elected without any condemnations from their own party, don’t think Mississippi R voters will care much

You look left, I can point right. Everybody's got them. So don't talk unless you're willing to have it thrown on you.

She literally wants to suppress votes. Meanwhile, NJ Senator was declared mistrial and Federal prosecutor declined to retry. So you should try harder than somebody who was actually tried by a jury of his peers and could not be found guilty.

Didn’t say the right was perfect.
She made a joke. She joked that wouldn’t it be nice if people who didn’t support her couldn’t vote. Meanwhile you have a Democrat Congressman insinuate that we should nuke those who oppose gun buybacks.
And OJ was found not to have murdered that woman. Didn’t stop the senate ethics committee from censoring him

So did the rest of the Right, uh huh. Her tone was pretty straight forward. I don't believe her campaign trying to cover for her ass. There's a reason Mississippi, a typically solid Republican state, is competitive right now. And it's because she keeps putting her foot in her mouth. IS SHE THAT GOD DAMN INCOMPETENT THAT WHEN SHE DOES ANYTHING IT INVOLVES PUTTING HER FOOT IN HER MOUTH?

As for the NJ Senator. The Prosecutor either has the evidence and is able to convince the jury, or he isn't. He was not able to convince the jury, and he decided not to try a second time. Your ball. You have a California Rep who is going to trial. This one is a Republican, and he cannot hide behind certain weird immunity clauses in the Constitution. He will be in that courtroom.

We will find out tomorrow if it is as competitive as the news makes it out to be I guess.

I dont care care if Hunter finds himself behind bars. His campaign was despicable for its horrid anti Muslim rhetoric

Yeah, instead we have an anti-abortion, pro 2nd Amendment (which means we can't talk about guns, still), anti-immigration, voter suppression Senator. But hey, at least she's a woman, and that "guy who lobbied for a dictator" didn't win. Thank god.

The choices pretty much sum up the US political system. Were there any candidates from other parties that couldn't muster milions in bribes to get media to talk about them, or are thse outright banned in senate elections?
