Anyone interested in helping out with the research about suitable names to replace all these repetitions of party names you find everywhere? You can check the current situation for the various factions here.

I have a version of a mod for this in operation already, but it only covers a few factions so far (Iolei, Taras and Veneti of the ROTR campaign) and it's time-consuming to find and select good substitutions based on history. If anyone has suggestions in this area, I'm all ears. If so, I'll turn this OP into a regular mod page, complete with download links and credits to all contributions that argue themselves into the mod. If not, this thread is not likely to evolve into more than a raised question.

Here's what I'm talking about. Remember the original names of the parties in Taras to have been Taras (ruling party), Disciples of Athena, Disciples of Ares etc? We can have them named like below instead (final changes for this faction have not been decided yet):

Political Parties Renamed (PPR)

This thread is for all R2 players who, like me, are tired of finding the names of the political parties to be basically the same in all factions belonging to one faction group or a related one. I'm here to invite you to offer suggestions for any faction in the game you think need different party names. If your argument is good, I'll make the changes accordingly, upload the result and give full credit to you here for the contribution.

Below are a couple of examples in the argument for change:

Note that in most playable factions, there's only one party opposing the ruling side at a time. This one opposing party may only be swapped for a new one as the result of civil war or secession, I think, where the ruling party wins (eradicates current opposition). It's commonly swapped in the order that the parties are mentioned in the game files. So, in those factions, to some degree, you may determine in what order a new party comes into play in domestic politics. In what follows, original party names are listed in plain text, new ones in cursive text.

IOLEI

It's quite possible that the Iolei were governed by clans. But, if so, it's not likely that the names of those clans had meanings that were identical to those of clans in Celtic or Gallic tribes. So, if we have no good substitutes for the clan names of the Celtic tribes in game, we need to look for options to the Nuragic side. Based on a Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilienses), we could have the names of historical tribes or divisions of the Iolei people (Iliensis) figuring as different parties of the Nuragic faction. They may be picked among the tribes that were located within the area given to this faction in game thus:

Ruling party = Ilienses
Clan of the Sun = The Parati
Clan of the Moon = The Esanorensi
Angry Bull Clan = The Nurrensi
Giant Boar Clan = The Celsitani
White Dove Clan = The Moddoli
Black Serpent Clan = The Cunusitani

Alternatively, if Iolei is a collective term (if there is no Iolei proper) and as the name of the Nurrensi contains the root Nur-, which seems to have some significance in the Nuragic culture, and the location of this tribe appears to correspond roughly to the location of the Iolei capital (Nugoro) in game, it might be fitting to have them stand as the ruling party, in which case the fourth party (former Angry Bull Clan) could be the Acconiti.

TARAS

This one is tricky. Currently in game the parties of Taras are made to be divided according to religious affiliation. But, according to a Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Taranto), there were two political parties in this city-state at the time when the campaign of ROTR starts. The dominant one were democrats; the other, which began as the ruling party but had dwindled in power, were aristocrats. Now, four types of government systems were common in ancient Greece and one can imagine that each had some followers in each of the many city-states. If the ruling party for Taras in game represents democracy, other parties could thereby represent oligarchy, tyranny and monarchy. If one type of opposition fails to gain the upper hand in game, the population might be seen to go backwards in history for inspiration, looking for ever more exclusive solutions. But here we need six different parties. Maybe we can have one party representing supporters of a different type of monarchy, namely matriarchy, inspired by stories of the Amazons. And maybe we can have a party representing supporters of more divine rule, advocates for religion to become even more important in Greek life. But we can also imagine a rule of a Council of Elders, for which younger men and women stand up in support. Whatever the case, as Taras is generally acknowledged to have a connection with Sparta, there ought to be some supporters in Taras for a government similar to the one in Sparta, which was a monarchy. From the above, we could have a party structure in Taras looking like this:

Ruling party = The Democrats
Disciples of Athena = The Aristocrats
Disciples of Ares = The Tyrants or Party of the Tyrant
Disciples of Zeus = The Oligarchs or Circle of Forty
Disciples of Apollo = The Royalists or Party of Royal Blood or The Spartans or Party of Spartans or Friends of Sparta
Disciples of Poseidon = The Matriarchs or Party of the Matriarch
Disciples of Hera = The Theocrats or Advocates of Divine Rule or Council of Elders (The Gerousia)

The Oligarchs are here understood as a more exclusive group of aristocrats or rich people. One can invent the number of these individuals that this group happen to consist of in Taras and make a name of that, like The Thirty Tyrants in Athens or above, for more interest. If you have a name like The Forty or similar, it could also serve better to distinguish the party structure in Taras from that of other Greek factions in game. Currently, the only thing separating the setup in Taras from that in Syracuse, for example, is the name of the ruling party.
But the argument for change in Taras could just as well apply for many Greek factions in game. So what to do here?

VENETI

According to a Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adriatic_Veneti), there were a number of tribes related to the Veneti (proper). For the purposes of this mod, these tribes could be given as opposition to the ruling party in Veneti territory. Two of them, however, the Carni and Histri, are already featured in the game, the former as a minor faction and the latter as an emergent faction. The first should therefore be excluded from the Venetian politics, but the latter could be regarded as part of the main group that emerged in the area and settled on Venetian territory. They could therefore be considered a force to be reckoned with last in the development of Venetian politics. The remaining tribes may be forces opposing the ruling party in random order thus:

Ruling party = The Veneti
Clan of the Sun = The Venetulani
Clan of the Moon = The Liburni
Angry Bull Clan = The Catari
Giant Boar Clan = The Secusses
White Dove Clan = The Catali
Black Serpent Clan = The Histri

And what does the false/true degination signify here?

Edit October 22, BTW: I have not found a source for the word epinoi on the net. May use the Latin word equites or just noblemen instead. Serfs are unlikely to have held any political power in Celtic or Gallic society, so I'd rather find some other group as the 7th and last party in Celtic and Gallic factions. May have a solution for those in Gallia Cisalpina, at least.


Edit October 24: According to my research, Vergobret was the title of an elected official that acted almost like a king among the Gallic Aedui; and the word for the basic social unit among the Celts or Gauls (at least on Gaelic Ireland), an extended family kinship group, was fine. Equipped with this info, I tested to add a couple of tags (the "ruler" and "council") for a minor faction of the Gauls (the Aedui) in PPR and use the latter together with Nordo's Faction Unlocker (for which Marcus_Iunius_Brutus_Caepio provided a link above). Result:
