Default Politeia - A Classical RPG Proposal

We are foreigners, opportunists, and exiles. Strangers to a new world across the sea, many leagues from our home; the cities and kingdoms that fight in the name of pride and greed. We bring our ways with us, but are intent on establishing something new, better than that which we left in our wake. Our old lives are gone, any misdeeds left behind with those who drove us out or wished us well. Now we enter the land of the barbaroi. On the mouth of a river we settle, and we proudly watch as the first homesteads appear and our wooden walls are raised. Locals come to marvel at us, though they cannot speak our tongue. Some will return with coin to buy from us, others with fire to drive us out. Whatever the cost, we shall persevere and survive.

Politeia is an RPG in which we take upon the role of Greek colonists in the ancient world (roughly 600 BCE). For one reason or another, we have left our homeland behind. Be it from war, criminal punishment, trade opportunities, exploration... It matters not. We have arrived upon the shores of a foreign land in the west intent on founding a community for ourselves. Everything else is in the hands of the players. What shall our name be? Who leads us? How do we govern ourselves? The players, as the first families of this new city, shall entirely dictate the future of this fledgling city-state, shaping the attitudes and institutions for the foreseeable future. Then, once it is established, it shall be up to them to ensure it remains intact. This is no easy task, and the new colonists will not only have to deal with internal political issues but also the threat of existing civilisations vying for dominance around them.

    Where do we land?
Again, entirely up to the playerbase, except this will be pre-determined before we start (for obvious reasons). Italy, Gaul, Hispania or even Africa would be my suggestions, though I am open to other ideas. State your choice below

    Who do we play as?
The first families/citizens of the colony will be Greeks, though origin and background is not restricted so long as it is plausible - they will most likely hail from one of the many city states of the Hellenic world. It is not out of the question to play as a native, either, though they will have to be sufficiently Hellenised to be accepted into society.

Also, when do we land? Sounds like we can be from anywhere in classical Greece as individuals though.

When as in a date? Yet to be decided save for a vague 500 BCE mark. And yes, you can be, so long as it is a plausible reason I do not really mind where your character is from.

Considering the Spartans only founded one colony, and the Perioikoi were the ones that settled it, being spartan is kinda a nonstarter.

But, this period is a real gem, so I’m interested in seeing where this goes.

I can be an outcast. No problem, imagining the character possibilities as we speak

Also, to the contrary of Brew's suggestion, I want to be a Messenian

Interested and willing to mod and help develop.

I will put down suggestions for Hispania and Southern Gaul as our locations as it could be interesting to interact with the wild tribes of Celts and Iberians.

Okay, so those interested have made their decision. We will be a colony primarily from the Ionian city of Phocaea, in Asia Minor. Our area of settlement shall be southern Gaul, more specifically the area around Narbonne.

So, a sandbox Greek colonial game in Italy/Sicily/Anatolia/Gaul?

Essentially yes, with the main focus being on the internal politics of the city
