Thread: Roman Setting

    Default Roman Setting

Well, it seems MKFAH is not going to materialise due to a lack of general enthusiasm amongst the moderators. Pontifex wishes to propose a Roman game, and so this poll is to be set up to that end.

Early/Middle Republic: Anything from Camillus (390 BCE) to the end of the Punic Wars (140 BCE)

Late Republic: The events of the first century BCE, from Marius to the end of the civil wars (30 BCE)

    Principate:
30 BCE onward. A republic on the surface, but one man exercises control over the Roman state.

I assume with an overhaul and refocus that makes it possible to do the west or east alone and mechanical ways to keep every year an impending disaster?

If I may make a suggestion, Apocalypse World has an official 'hack' called Fallen Empires that replaces the Mad Max-Fallout punk wasteland theme with a fantasy theme inspired by the power vacuum left when empires like Rome fall apart. Apocalypse World, or Powered by the Apocalypse, is a pretty innovative system that focuses on interaction between characters and uses emergent storytelling driven by character goals and world building in the go. You could easily make Fallen Empires feel like a fantastical analogue to post Roman Gaul, for example, I'd you wanted to (but the most important thing about PbtA is not scripting things).

The game I'm running with Oznerol in this forum is PbtA, but it's not the best example. Here's a good example: https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php...After-Ragnarok

Fallen Empires has a free legal preview version that allows anyone to play it (but not run it) if you just google Apocalypse World Fallen Empires.

Barry and I discussed both eastern and western scenarios for a Sunset Over Rome revival. As early as the Third Century Crisis.
