Early/Middle Republic: Anything from Camillus (390 BCE) to the end of the Punic Wars (140 BCE)

Late Republic: The events of the first century BCE, from Marius to the end of the civil wars (30 BCE)

Principate: 30 BCE onward. A republic on the surface, but one man exercises control over the Roman state.
