Default Do farms actually do anything?

Do farms work as in vanilla, or do they no longer give a bonus to population growth? I somehow suspect the latter, but I'd like some confirmation.

Only in the years when you have a good/bountiful harvest can you reap their benefits.

Is that a fanciful way of saying that only the harvest events count, or do you mean that, the more farms I build, the greater the effect of harvests will be?

I don't know for sure but the way it seems in my games:

The effects of farms on pop growth seem to only take effect when you have a normal or better than normal harvest. So if you check the tab when you have a bad harvest it will seem that the farms do nothing but if you check during a good harvest you will see their effect. The way I see it they are just as important as in vanilla, it's just that sometimes they don't do anything and sometimes they do very well.
