They took what they could, focusing on the wealthier homes and lands of the minor knightly tenants, and burnt the fields and buildings that they couldn’t claim nor take with them. No churches were harmed however, nor lands belonging to the church, lest God look upon him unfavorably in the further. Waltheof’s venture went well, they took the province by complete surprise, sweeping through the countryside before a defense of any kind could be mustered. The other two forces faired relatively well, though they faced some resistance it was easily dealt with, and those they killed would even the score of their fallen friends and kinsmen back in Wales. The Earl of Northampton was pleased with his work for now, but the thought of further retribution clawed at the back of his mind, and perhaps the chaos wrought here hadn’t evened the score. The handful of their men that had fallen were taken with them, to be buried at their homes in Northampton, but the enemy corpses were left to rot.
