Default Gathering of the Northern Clergy

Following the royal proclamation of Bishop Geoffrey de Mowbray's appointment to the Archbishopric of York, the bishop himself had moved north to consolidate his new position. Though he doubted few would openly oppose him with the backing of the king, Mowbray nonetheless had to follow protocol to officially be invested as the new archbishop. Invitations were sent out to all bishops whose dioceses under the jurisdiction of York to "choose" the new primate.

    ---

The bishops that had elected to accept the invitation arrived in York, greeted by Geoffrey de Mowbray outside York Minster. The Norman bishop had some of his guard, knights from his home country of Coutances, patrol the streets outside the old cathedral while the prelates gathered inside. After some early mingling, the bishops took their seats as Mowbray called the meeting to order. Without further ado, he took the stage and began his opening speech.

"Brothers of the cloth, fathers of the Church, I welcome you all on this important day. With the passing of Archbishop Ealdred, the time has come for the election of his successor. Though I did not know the late Archbishop, I know that he was a true son of Christ who did much for the faithful under his care. It is my wish to continue his legacy of bettering the life of the English faithful and spread the word of the Lord to those yet untouched by His word. An Englishman I may not be, yet our noble King Edgar has seen it fit to entrust me with the position of Chancellor at his court. It is my wish to earn that position and the trust of the English faithful through honest work, promoting the work of your monasteries and the construction of new churches and clerical buildings. Let no man north of the river Trent be ignorant of the work of the Church."

With that he took his place and let the discussion and arguments continue. Soon enough there would be a call to vote.
