    Default Campaign Map Textures

    After spending a couple hours trolling through the M2TW texture files, I have yet to discover the textures for the Campaign Map landscape. It's entirely possible I'm missing the trees for the forest here since there's simply so many textures. Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction? All I'm looking for is the appropriate .texture file, I've got the all the tools and skills necessary for the actual modding.

    I personally find the default campaign map is a bit garish and distracting. The high-contrast bright colors make it difficult to see at-a-glance the relationships between armys, borders, and cities.

    I believe there was a mod for RTW that addressed this issue, and since the campaign map engine is pretty much unchanged, I would assume that it is entirely possible to change the campaign map textures in M2TW.

    I'm thinking about trying for a much more subdued (perhaps even monochrome) look. More akin to the classic MTW campaign map color palette.

    Any ideas or requests once I get this ball rolling?

    Look in the data\terrain folder, i believe the .texture files in the sub folders are those for the campaign map.

    If its just the terrain ground types on the strategy map you are trying to change they are just TGA files and are referred to in Descr_aerial_map_ground_Types.txt.

    Ok, here's a first crack at it... I tried going for the subdued colors but felt that it didn't really work, so I went the other way and tried for a more lush and colorful map.

    Here's the latest screenshot, I've updated the beach and the mountain textures.

    Next up I think I'll try to make the tree's a bit more vibrant. They look a bit faded next to the very green grass.

    Mhh.. Well, I'd like to Add a Question here.
    Would it be possible to Map the World as in Medieval I. I mean, to keep the Medieval II movements cities and such, but to alter the terrain to look like it's been crafted from parchment/paper or maybe from a Copper plate?

    Is this text file really the only onde responsible for strat map terrain textures? Because in TATW, no matter how much I set winter textures for the Tropical climate (Moria), the game keeps summer textures for it even in winter.

    I think a climate needs to have a winter entry in descr_climates for winter textures to be used plus it needs the strategy and vegetation entry, see example:
    Code:
    climate steppe
    {
        colour    237 28 36
        heat    1
        winter

        ; 3D tree models used - Gig
        strategy    summer    sparse_tree    birch_a.cas                        1
        strategy    summer    dense_tree    birch_a_impassable.cas            0
        strategy    summer    canopy        birch_a_canopy.cas                12

        strategy    winter    sparse_tree    birch_a_winter.cas                5
        strategy    winter    dense_tree    birch_a_impassable_winter.cas    4
        strategy    winter    canopy        birch_a_canopy_winter.cas        13

        battle_vegetation
        dense_forest    grass_infert_dense_forest
        dense_scrub        grass_infert_dense_scrub

        battle_winter_vegetation
        dense_forest    grass_infert_dense_forest_win
        dense_scrub        grass_infert_dense_scrub_win
        env_map            data/battlefield/envmaps/grass.dds

    Thanks! You're right.

    I also found out that if you want to remove strat map tree models from a specific climate you can just delete the text from the file...

    before:

    Code:
    climate tropical{
    	colour	0 166 81
    	heat	2
    	winter

    	strategy	summer	sparse_tree	palm_a.cas				8
    	strategy	summer	sparse_tree	palm_b.cas				9
    	strategy	summer	canopy		conifer_a_canopy.cas			14

    	strategy	winter	sparse_tree	palm_a.cas				8
    	strategy	winter	sparse_tree	palm_b.cas				9
    	strategy	winter	canopy		conifer_a_canopy.cas			14

    	battle_vegetation
    	dense_forest		dense_pine
    	dense_scrub		highland_dense_scrub

    	battle_winter_vegetation
    	dense_forest		winter_dense_pine
    	dense_scrub		highland_dense_scrub_win
    	env_map			data/battlefield/envmaps/grass.dds
    }
    later:

    Code:
    climate tropical{
    	colour	0 166 81
    	heat	2
    	winter

    	strategy	summer	sparse_tree					8
    	strategy	summer	sparse_tree					9
    	strategy	summer	canopy		14

    	strategy	winter	sparse_tree					8
    	strategy	winter	sparse_tree					9
    	strategy	winter	canopy					14

    	battle_vegetation
    	dense_forest		dense_pine
    	dense_scrub		highland_dense_scrub

    	battle_winter_vegetation
    	dense_forest		winter_dense_pine
    	dense_scrub		highland_dense_scrub_win
    	env_map			data/battlefield/envmaps/grass.dds
    }
