Gilbert's sudden passing meant that the succession of his lands and earldom remains undecided, with no will written to draw precedent from. He signs a charter at Hollywell confirming the settlement of Gilbert's estate.
His title as Earl of Shrewsbury shall be settled upon his wife, who shall rule as countess in her own right for life. Her dower shall be the estates of Ludlow, Clun, and Drayton, which shall pass to her heirs.
Gilbert the younger, the King's nephew, shall receive his father's other estates, though these shall be administered by the King until he is of age to take possession of these lands. Gilbert shall be a royal ward, raised in the King's household.
In memory of Gilbert, a priory shall be raised on the spot of his death, sponsored by the King himself.

With confirmation from Alnwick of the Danish raids on his lands, and a royal missive giving him command of the Northern defenses, the Earl of Northumbria requests a meeting with the nobility of England who stand as lords in the north. These missives are sent to the Bishop of Durham, the Percevals of Westmorland, his in-law Siwardsson, de Lacy, de Tosny and de Champagne. They are asked to meet within the stronghold of Bebbanburh Castle. The missive reminds them to ensure they arrive with sufficient guards due to the unknown and possibly lingering presence of the Viking raiders.

It is made known, throughout the realm, that by the religious authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury, with agreement of the clergy, that Lord Clare is excommunicated by the Church for his barbarous acts within East Anglia. He is excluded from the church and refused communion as a result of his crimes against God, against the Realm, and against the King.

Upon the death of Osulf, his lands and titles are to be inherited by his grandson, Harold Uthredsson, son of the late Maldred and Lady Gunhild of Wessex.
In addition, an amount of money will be granted to his daughters from his personal exchequer as part of the will.

If Harold is to be taken by God before he is made into a man, the lands will be divided accordingly;
- His eldest, Elga, wife of Lord Waltheof Siwardsson, will inherit the Honour of Northumberland and the title of Northumbria.
- His paternal cousin, Gospatric, will be compensated with money and given the lands he owns as tenant in Cumbria.
- In light of his mother's death, Tostig Godwinson will inherit the Honour of Cumbria, intended originally for Ardith Uthreddohter.
- His bastard daughter, Elfrida of York, will be compensated with money.

The King signs a charter at Winchester appointing Richard Perceval as Earl of Northumbria, as well as the guardian of Harold’s estate until he is of age. Richard is charged with leading the defence against the Danes in the place of Oswulf.

In the year of our lord 1076, Walter de Lascy is wed to the King's sister Adeliza at Saint Paul's Cathedral, with the entire royal household in attendance. As a dowry, he is bestowed with substantial estate in Lewes, Cuckfield and Horsham. He is also named the King's chamberlain.

With authority over Mercian nobility invested in him by the King, the Earl of Hereford sends forth a call to those nobles within that region to raise their levies and gather at Lincoln as a relief force northward against the Danes. Talbot and Ewyas are also ordered to raise their men.

The Lord Harold marries King William's niece Judith of Lens during his sojourn on the continent. With news of the impending Danish threat he returns with her to England.

It becomes known, throughout the realm, that due to the penance fulfilled by de Clare, the Archbishop of Canterbury lifts the ban of excommunication from the Lord de Clare.

In Anno Domini 1077, Roger Perceval, Baron of Rutland has finally taken Maria Bageard as his lawful wife after many years of engagement.

A sentence is passed upon the senior Mowbray, who has spent the past few years languishing in a dungeon. Undoubtedly guilty of murdering a noble and kinsman of the King, he faces indefinite exile from the all the King’s realms, upon pain of death should he return.
