“Yes.” He replied plainly, as he dismounted his horse, handing the reigns to a stablehand. “They hit all along my coastal holdings.. they were sent by my cousin, King Sweyn. Or so my men say, his son Canute was supposedly leading the force.” His hands were clenched in fists of rage, that his cousin would make war upon his soil, disgraceful.

Northumbria has them be brought in, though with some difficulty, considering the traffic coming in and out of his castle.

My Lord Nottingham. Is your son, Roger, with you? Does he have any word from Westmorland? Have the Vikings attacked there at all?
"Richard, you mean. My Roger's baron in Rutland, not Westmorland." William, Earl of Nottingham guffawed by way of greeting.

"There's been no attack on the western shore, Lord Osulf." Richard stated earnestly, nodding respectfully to his sort-of-father-in-law. "It appears to me as though the Norse have only harried the eastern coast. Their friends and cousins in Dublin or the Scottish isles have yet to move." Not exactly good news, but at least it was better than 'yes, Gunhild's estates were hit too' would've been.

Canute, the son of the King of Denmark, was spotted??

This felt like bad news that was building. If a Danish royal was involved, things could prove to be very uncertain.

Either he is gaining experience... or finding a place to invade.

    Osulf scratches his beard slightly.

They penetrated inland here, went into Glendale near the Scottish border, before they departed. Where was Canute sighted?

Then the Danes are working alone. They have not attracted the attention of neither the Vikings of Dublin, Mann nor the Western Isles.

This was at least some good news. They could likely anticipate further attacks from one direction.

Keep an eye on the shores though. If they are to strike, they will likely come from Mann.

Osulf's knowledge of the North and the history his ancestors had with the Danes will help. Since the attack, his clerics were working hard to pinpoint the various places the Danes invaded in the past.

I hear they attacked just near York. Lord Waltheof has confirmed these details to me.

“Yes, Canute was spotted, leading the raiders outside my keep in Hull.” Waltheof replied dismissively. It should not come as a great surprise, given the history northern England shared with the Danes. “I have no doubt this heralds more than a fresh era of raiding, my cousin Sweyn has a claim to the throne, one far superior to Hardrada’s.” He snorted, grinding his teeth in thought. Waltheof expected they would have come many years ago. Mortain’s invasion, or the Saxon rebellion would have been an opportune time to strike a divided kingdom, but the Danes rarely had good timing.

The Fleming would be the next to arrive, flanked by just four of his vassal knights. He'd not treated with Uthredsson before, but his dealings with his dear wife's family and his vassals over the years had seen him grow more and more knowledgeable of Saxon customs. Whereas he'd seen them as an unknown threat before, he now held the belief that they were, at least to some extent, honorable. However, he'd not forgotten the battle of York, and his cleric had informed him of an interesting detail that he'd not been aware of before. The one called Waltheof, who had shifted his allegiance from the Godwinsons to the invaders early on, had norseman blood coursing through his veins. He'd have to keep an eye on that one.

His musings abruptly ended as the party was brought to a halt before the motte. One of the Flemish knights began calling out to the guard, of course in French. Gerbod and his household had made a point of considering the language of the continent both more practical and more refined, and as such stubbornly refused to speak it in all but the most pressing matters, although the Fleming could understand at least the rudiments of it. He prayed he would not be the first of the Normans to arrive.

Hull is within the Humber... which means the Danes are likely looking at traditional places to invade.

Osulf wondered if the presence of Canute meant something more, but he had only appeared once.

Is there a keep in those lands? Have you taken any measures along the Humber?

My Lord Gerbod, welcome to Bebbanburh Castle. If only we could meet on different terms... but Danes have once more returned to our shores and have penetrated into Yorkshire. Have they been spotted anywhere near your lands?

“There’s a Keep there, shortly it will be one made from stone.” He snorted, tightening his fur cloak about his shoulders. “But the men were unable to hide the people or the supplies in time.” He looks toward the battlements with a shrug. “Are there others arriving?”

"We'll commission a keep in Westmorland as soon as possible, of stone at that." Richard answered gravely, nodding. That would mean next year, because the Percevals had burnt through their income this year already. "If the Danes compel their friends and kin to the west to aid them, they'll have another thing coming for them should they opt to torch Gunhild's dower lands."

"Looks to me like the Danes will be using their old invasion routes then, if indeed these raids are just a sign of something more serious." William quipped when the topic shifted back to the main Danish raids. Good thing he had no lands on the coast. "Any plans for countermeasures? I don't suppose you'd consider loading the armies of the North up onto boats and sailing over the North Sea to teach the Danes a lesson rather closer to home." He was only half-serious, and couldn't help but grin.

Come my Lords, I am about to gather those who have answered my missives for a meeting.

I have ordered a stone keep to be built here. And commissioned another motte and bailey due north at Alnwick. They especially hit the coast around these two areas... likely keeping away from the clerical lands of Durham.

Osulf glances behind the two of them at the workers who were hauling in the necessary stone for the upgrade to his keep.

The King wants us to arrange the deployment of ships along the coasts. We will need to discuss where to best concentrate our ships.

The Earl of Northumbria gestures to the south and west of them.

I sent missives to Lord Gerbod, the Percevals in Westmorland, Durham, de Tosny, de Champagne and de Lacy. Hopefully plenty will come to the meeting.

Be aware that I placed a castle within the lands of Pendragon. It would be wise to commission a stone keep within that Motte and Bailey I constructed.

Money spent towards Maldred's lands, but he died too early for them. Hopefully, Harold will inherit them one day.

The King has ordered me to coordinate the defense of this area with the other lords and ensure ships are deployed. Lord Waltheof has already arrived and is currently awaiting within the keep.

Osulf gestures forward before walking with them to head inside.

"I see." Raoul says, before pausing for a moment. "Do you have any idea of who was behind these raids? All I know is longships were sighted off the coast of Scarborough and one of my other estates." "We think it to be a band of pirates or Norwegians from the territory they control in Scotland." Robert says.

“We should focus on defending the mouth of the Humber, lest York fall, but I suppose speaking of the matter is no issue.” Waltheof yawned, eyes heavy. “For now the journey has me worn thin and parched, I assume the Vikings have yet to raid your ladders?” He laughed at his jape.

My Lord Gerbod, welcome to Bebbanburh Castle. If only we could meet on different terms... but Danes have once more returned to our shores and have penetrated into Yorkshire. Have they been spotted anywhere near your lands?
The Fleming shrugged, looking unimpressed as ever. He had to admit, the Saxon had maintained his estates well, by the looks of it. "I thank you for your hospitality," he answered. "Straight to the point, I see. A man to my heart. To answer your question, no. I and mine have not seen hide nor hair of the Danes. What I have observed with my own eyes, however, is a trickle of displaced peasants moving through my eastern countryside. They told of the Norseman return. For many of them, Hardrada seemed to still be a fresh memory of death and burned livelyhoods. For those of us who are not ignorant of history, the threat of Danish invasion should be seen as considerable."

He gestured to his tenants, who had by now falled behind with no intention of catching up. "Contrary to most of the realm, my men are unspent and long for a battle. We hear reports of bloody battles with the Welsh, infighting between English lords and deaths of peers all around us. While it is true that my domain is not directly threatened by any raiders or even invaders, I am not oblivious to the advantage that there is to be had when the foe has their backs to the sea. After all, York is not so far from my own lands." He smirked. "And if the rumors of impending invasion by Sweyn or one of his many sons are true, one must see the profit that is to be had, is it not? A King's ransom would not feel misplaced in my treasury." He paused for a moment. "Rest assured, my Lord Bamburgh, the banners of Peveril will see the field if it comes to blows."

A messenger arrives from the coastal villages of northernmost Yorkshire. A few Danish ships have once more been spotter along the coast, moving south in greater numbers than before.

Your words are welcomed, Lord Gerbod. Come come, let us head inside to Bebbanburh Castle.

It is Danes. This was confirmed by a tenant in Glendale and Waltheof's men sighting Canute, son of Sweyn, along the Humber.

Wine will certainly be given to you, Lord Waltheof. I cannot let the husband of my daughter go thirsty.

We may not have enough time to gather the ships, but we must gather our men nonetheless.

    He turns to Waltheof first.

Waltheof, you and Lord Gerbod will defend the Humber and watch the coasts in that area.

    He looks at de Tosny.

Rally your men, my Lord. They will be needed.

    He looks at Perceval last.

Any men that can be spared should be gathered. I will call forth my banners in Northumberland and march south.

Terrible news greets the guests the following morning. Osulf was found dead within his bed chamber, a servant found him in this state and realized he would not rise. That morning, a messenger rides south to bring news to the King. A retainer following the messenger's path some time later. Another retainer comes to Roger Perceval, stating that Harold Uthredsson was needed to be returned to Bebbanburh Castle with his mother.
