Jean de Courtrai
Jean (sometimes called
Jan), was born in
Kortrijk, near
Bruges in
Flanders. His father was
Châtelain of
Kortrijk or as it was known to French, the heredity fiefdom of
Courtrai. His family was among the richest and most prominent among the Flemish nobility and served their overlords, the
counts of Flanders. His mother came from a respected noble family, her father was a local
seigneur near the city of
Bruxelles, serving the
counts of Louvain and Brussels.
Jean de Courtrai was at best, a bit of an odd fish among the compagnons of
William the Bastard, unlike most others, he wasn't broad-shouldered or brusk of voice or even in character. Instead he was rather lanky and frail, with copper coloured hair. He had a mixed reputation of being sullen and some gossiped that he was also spending too much time with his stableboy. He had ended up in the service of
William the Bastard, through his connections he had with
William's wife
Mathilde of Flanders. He had came to
Rouen as part of her entourage from
Flanders, upon her marriage to the
Duke of Normandy and never left again, as he continued to have her favour and support. And of course,
William could always use extra men (and his knights, proved for by his father) in his service, especially in 1066, even if he was just an odd Flemish man.

Ida de CourtraiIda was born in Courtrai to a Flemish nobleman hereditary landholder, Châtelain of Kortrijk and her mother, herself the daughter of a Louvain Seigneur. Born of good noble stock, as the younger of two daughters in her household. Her mother was strikt for her. Her elder Daughter, whom was named after the Holy Virgin, had been blessed with good graces and superior charm. Ida had been blessed with gentle character and good sense. Needless to say, she was considered rather plain and uninteresting.
Two major opportunities have accorded in her life. After none of the noble families in the greater region had ever showed some interest in wedding her to their sons, a rich merchant had proposed to marry her off to his eldest son, to boost his family's reputation. Her headstrong and proud father had denied him her hand in marriage. He considered a merchant too low for his daughter.
The second chance to escape her family home came not too long ago by a female relative, whom offered her a place in a nunnery and to pledge herself to God. Ida wasn't unwilling to join the nunnery, no man of standing had ever taken a liking to her, so she was happy to escape the life of an Old Maid as a veiled bride to Christ. This time, her mother had forbidden her to enter the convent. Declaring that her daughters were not fit to join to become a nun.
So instead she stayed at home and largely in time took over the role of her mother and acted as the head of their household. When her brother Jean - of whom nobody had once expected much, suddenly acquired riches and fame in England, she was promptly send to him to help him settle in his new homeland.
