    Default 1066: Sign-Up

Here you can sign up the characters that you have claimed without challenge. As a rule, if your character is a historical one I'd wait for a day to see if interest materialises. If your claim isn't contested, then go ahead and sign them up. Ensure you've read the rules before beginning the character creation process (specifically concerning character traits).

Feel free to create ahistorical families, but please, keep them plausible. Would rather not have Irish clansmen or Polish warlords wandering around in medieval England, but other than that we are pretty relaxed. Ask a moderator if you're unsure about any element of character creation, including ethnic origins and background: they're important components of a character and the RP experience as a whole.

Your character will likely end up being either allied to or opposed to William at the game start, so it is best to decide relatively quickly on which side you stand. This will shape your status during the opening event. Consult the setting information if unsure.

    GIFFARD

The Giffards are an old Norman family, having long been landholders with the title of Lord de Longueville. As such, like many other Normans, Walter Giffard, the head of his household, is a cousin of William 'the Conqueror' through his mother, who was a sister of Gunnora, the wife of the Duke of Normandy, Richard I 'the Fearless,' the great-great grandfather of William. Yet all know of the Elder Giffard for his exploits, not only within Normandy, but elsewhere in Europe. He stood as a loyalist of the young William during the Battle of Mortemer in 1054. During the years of 1064 to 1065, Walter answered the call of God and became one of many Christian Knights fighting the Saracens in Spain. There, he heard the ephitet 'le Barbastre' for his role in the siege of Barbasto. Upon his return, Walter presented to his liege, Duke William, a spanish war-horse from the Spanish King himself, a horse that the Duke of the Normans rode into battle at Hastings.

During the Norman Invasion of England, Walter provided thirty ships to transport their troops across the English Channel. Despite being a man of fifty-five years, and having a head of white hairs, when Walter was offered to carry William's banner at Hastings, the old Norman politely declined, stating that he would rather have both hands free to fight. After the Battle of Hastings, he was joined by his two brothers, Berenger and Osberne as well as the rest of his family. Their hopes high for lands to be acquired as a foundation for their family's future.

    DE PERCI (PERCY)

The Percy family comes from the town of Percy in Normandy, where a chateau resides. William de Percy is an odd man among the Normans for his bearded face, which was uncommon among the Normans, who were usually clean-shavened, earning him the epithet, Aux Grenons, later known as Algernon, a popular name used by the Percy family in later ages to come. It is believed that William was once a Norman landholder in England, during the reign of Edward the Confessor, which may explain the adoption of a bearded face. Yet, Harold Godwinson forced the Normans out of England and back home after the death of the Confessor.

After the Battle of Hastings, William de Percy arrives in England with his family, hoping to gain lands in vast kingdom that his liege has conquered.

    House of Bamburgh

Though not officially known as the House of Bamburgh, save by their common birthplace in Bamburgh Castle, along the Northumbria coastline, this Saxon family is descended from a line kings, dating as far back as King Egbert I, who ruled in the late 9th Century as the King of Northumbria. At one time, they were acknowledged as 'King of the Northern Saxons' during the reign of Earl Eadwulf. Yet, with all great families, they have fallen from grace and since resided to such a fate in the northern lands of England. The sons and descendants of Uchtred the Bold now rule in these lands, among them being his grandson, Osulf II, son of Eadulf III, Earl of Bamburgh. They were made High-Reeves or Earls of Bamburgh by the power of Siward the Stout, one of the last Norse Earls in these northern lands and who married a cousin of Oswulf.

With the wars that challenged Harold Godwinson's reign, both from Norway and from Normandy, Oswulf became uncertain of where his loyalties would lie. Once the Norwegians were cast away, he began to muster his troops to aid his victorious liege, only to learn of his death at Hastings. Now, with the Normans in power and the House of Godwin broken, Osulf must consider the best course of action; sedition or submission, even if it is a play for time.

    Bamburgh Family
Name: Osulf (Oswulf) II of Bamburgh

    EDGAR OF THE WEST SAXONS
Also known to the English as Edgar of Hungary.
Son of Edward the Exile, who in turn was the son of King Edmund of the English.

Known as Ætheling or Adeling during his lifetime, denoting his status as a member of the royal house.

“… What little is known of Edgar’s early life is that he spent it in Hungary, a child of the exiled Edward, nephew and namesake of the last King. It is said that Edward enjoyed the favour of Andrew, their King, and helped him reclaim his lost patrimony. As a symbol of this friendship, Edward wed King Andrew's kinswoman, Agatha, a relative of the Emperor, who became mother to Margaret in 1045, Cristina in 1048, and Edgar in 1051. Five year after his birth, he was summoned to Engleterre with his father, who was to be named as the childless King’s heir. The Earl Harold Godwinson was sent to fetch them, and in the next year they arrived by ship to the court of Edwardus Rex, who welcomed his nephew as a father would a son. Edward was no longer an exile, and arrangements were being made for him to be recognised as the King's heir before the English nobles.

The sudden death of Edgar’s father shortly after his arrival ultimately proved to be the work of God, for it led to our dear lord and king William to be promised the throne in his stead. Edgar, a boy of five, was raised and tutored in the court of Edward, and was granted the distinction of Adelinus due to their shared kinship. Other than this, the King showed his nephew no distinction, with Edgar considered too distant his kin and too young to be considered a fitting heir to England's throne. When Edward, God rest him, passed into heaven, the Earl Harold unrightfully usurped the crown and was justly slain by our noble lord William. Edgar was briefly crowned by the English as their King, but, when confronted by our Lord's righteousness, acknowledged the superiority of his claim and paid homage to him as the rightful King of the English. After our lord’s coronation, he became a member of his court, and was not permitted to leave his side, for the Earls in the north were conspiring to raise him up as their King once again …”

    ALAN AR ROUZ
    SEIGNEUR DE RICHEMONT

Alan is a Breton by birth: the second son of Eozen Penteur, Count of Penthievre, who in turn was the grandson of Richard the Fearless, Duke of the Normans. He entered the service of his kinsman William in 1060, and was granted by the Duke the fief of Richemont in upper Normandy as a gift to sustain himself upon. Alan briefly made war upon his own people during William's conflicts with the Duke Conan, fighting alongside both the Duke and Harold Godwinson, who was a guest at the Norman court. Alan professes that he witnessed the Earl Harold swear an oath of fealty to the Duke and promise to uphold his claim to the English throne. After King Edward's death and Godwinson's usupration, he made a solemn vow before God to accompany his kinsman across the sea and avenge this dishonour, and so followed William across the channel with a force that his father had raised to assist in the Conquest. At Hastings, he is attested to have commanded the considerable Breton contingent that made up the left wing and rear-guard of William's force, and served with distinction alongside his brothers Alan "the Black" and Brien de Bretagne. Now he and his brothers stand at William's side, eager to receive their reward for the services rendered to their liege.

His epithet "Ar Rouz" or "Rufus" comes from his copper-coloured hair, shared with his father's mother, that he cuts close to the skull in the Norman fashion.

    RICHART DE NORMANDIE
FILZ de GUILLELME le BATARD, DUX NORMANNORUM et REX ANGLORUM

Richard of Normandy, second child of the Conqueror, was born at Rouen in 1054, at a time when William's rule over Normandy was uncertain.
Too young to have taken part in his father's campaigns in Brittany and later in England, Richard remained in Normandy alongside his mother and brothers. As with all adolescent nobles, Richard has begun his education in the ways of warfare, and shows no small amount of aptitude. He is already considered an able horseman, like his father, and is becoming adept with both the lance and the bow. Richard has ever been at odds with his brothers, Robert and William, and this conflict has only grown worse as they became older and their father more absent. They fight, trick, and deceive each other, with the younger two brothers often joining forces against the elder, who had always been the taller and stronger of the three.
It is widely expected that Robert will soon follow their father to England, as he is on the cusp of manhood, and doubtless eager to prove himself against the English. Richard and William , still being underage, will likely remain in Normandy until hostilities cease.

    Jean de Courtrai

Jean (sometimes called Jan), was born in Kortrijk, near Bruges in Flanders. His father was Châtelain of Kortrijk or as it was known to French, the heredity fiefdom of Courtrai. His family was among the richest and most prominent among the Flemish nobility and served their overlords, the counts of Flanders. His mother came from a respected noble family, her father was a local seigneur near the city of Bruxelles, serving the counts of Louvain and Brussels.

Jean de Courtrai was at best, a bit of an odd fish among the compagnons of William the Bastard, unlike most others, he wasn't broad-shouldered or brusk of voice or even in character. Instead he was rather lanky and frail, with copper coloured hair. He had a mixed reputation of being sullen and some gossiped that he was also spending too much time with his stableboy. He had ended up in the service of William the Bastard, through his connections he had with William's wife Mathilde of Flanders. He had came to Rouen as part of her entourage from Flanders, upon her marriage to the Duke of Normandy and never left again, as he continued to have her favour and support. And of course, William could always use extra men (and his knights, proved for by his father) in his service, especially in 1066, even if he was just an odd Flemish man.

    Name: Jean de Courtrai
    Material status: Unwed
Age: 30 (born in June, St John the Baptist' feast 1036)
    Children: none
    Skills: Battle +2, Assassin +2, Wealth +2
Temperment: Haggler: This character is obsessed with getting the best possible deal for themselves, and ever watchful (even paranoid) for anyone trying to rip them off. This sort of fellow is rarely the sort others like, but none can deny their ability to sniff for gold. +7.5% income and improves loot from raids, -2 Charisma.
Household in England: his unwed sister Ida de Courtrai (25).

Ida de CourtraiIda was born in Courtrai to a Flemish nobleman hereditary landholder, Châtelain of Kortrijk and her mother, herself the daughter of a Louvain Seigneur. Born of good noble stock, as the younger of two daughters in her household. Her mother was strikt for her. Her elder Daughter, whom was named after the Holy Virgin, had been blessed with good graces and superior charm. Ida had been blessed with gentle character and good sense. Needless to say, she was considered rather plain and uninteresting.
Two major opportunities have accorded in her life. After none of the noble families in the greater region had ever showed some interest in wedding her to their sons, a rich merchant had proposed to marry her off to his eldest son, to boost his family's reputation. Her headstrong and proud father had denied him her hand in marriage. He considered a merchant too low for his daughter.
The second chance to escape her family home came not too long ago by a female relative, whom offered her a place in a nunnery and to pledge herself to God. Ida wasn't unwilling to join the nunnery, no man of standing had ever taken a liking to her, so she was happy to escape the life of an Old Maid as a veiled bride to Christ. This time, her mother had forbidden her to enter the convent. Declaring that her daughters were not fit to join to become a nun.

So instead she stayed at home and largely in time took over the role of her mother and acted as the head of their household. When her brother Jean - of whom nobody had once expected much, suddenly acquired riches and fame in England, she was promptly send to him to help him settle in his new homeland.

    Name: Ida de Courtrai
    Material status: Unwed
Age: 30 (born in May, St Ida's feast 1041)
    Children: none
    Skills: Survival +2, Charm +2, Wealth +2
Temperment: Empathic: This character is strongly attuned to the emotions of others and cares for them, making them great friends or kinsmen to have - but poor warriors and generals. +2 Charisma, -1 to battle/joust/duel rolls.

    De Vere

The De Veres would, in time, become one of the oldest lines of Norman nobility in England, dating back to a certain 'Albericus' or Aubrey de Vere who was listed as a significant landowner in Essex (indeed this was where the De Veres' ancestral seat, Hedingham Castle, was built) and the Queen's chamberlain in the Domesday Book of 1086.

However, none of that has happened yet, and young Aubrey is at present but one of many knights in service to the newly-crowned King William the Conqueror. He has shown more greed and talent for enrichment than actual martial skill or valor, making him better suited to be someone's...say, steward or chamberlain, but he dutifully fought at Hastings nonetheless.

    Edmund Godwinson

The House of Godwin was an upstart latecomer to English politics. Its progenitor was Godwin of Wessex, the son of a Sussex thegn by the name of Wulfnoth Cild who collaborated with the regime of Sweyn Forkbeard and Canute following the defeat of the House of Wessex at Danish hands. With their patronage, Godwin gained great power and wealth, becoming Earl of Wessex in four years and marrying Canute's sister-in-law Githa Thorkilsdottir, with whom he had many sons and only slightly fewer daughters. And all it took for Godwin was...to repeatedly betray and undercut the House of Wessex's efforts at restoring itself, including deceiving Edward the Confessor's brother Alfred into torture and an early grave. Even after engineering the Confessor's enthronement, he feuded with the ancient line of Cerdic, spearheading opposition to the growth of Norman influence at court and ultimately getting himself exiled for a time. After his death, his second son Harold succeeded him as Earl of Wessex was elected King of England ahead of both William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy and Edgar Atheling, the last living male representative of the House of Wessex after the Confessor.

Of course, then Harold went on to fight both Harald Hardrada of Norway and William of Normandy for the throne, and while he defeated the former he didn't have the strength to vanquish the latter. Following his death and the deaths of his brothers at Hastings, Godwinson's family fled into exile. His eldest sons by his common-law wife Edith Swan-neck, twins Godwin and Edmund, are old enough to plot their return to their father's throne, however...and Edmund, though a man fairly moderate in temperament who is more sanguine and less warlike than his father, still staunchly believes his family better deserves to rule than either the foreign Norman invaders or the Atheling, for what is birthright compared to the merit proven by his father's valor and energy in trying to oppose two simultaneous invasions of their fair isle?

    Perceval

Perce-val, 'pierces the valley', was the nickname of the Norman borderer-knight Roger d'Argouges, earned with his sweeping ambush of and victory over a Breton raiding party in a vale while patrolling the southern edges of Normandy's portion of the Breton March. The name stuck even after he died in a later, completely unrelated skirmish, and his son Guillaume bore it proudly. This same Guillaume was among the host of knights who sailed to England beneath the standards of his liege, Duke William, and the Pope, and consequently won the day at Hastings. With a growing family to care for and the battle done, William Perceval is eager to get his hands on his reward of land and settle down in his new, unfamiliar country.

    Biography:
Born around the year of 1000 anno domini Stigand was first mentioned as the royal chaplain to king Cnut around 1020 anno domini. Through royal favor Stigand was ordained bishop of Elmham in the year of 1043, likely because of Queen Emma's influence. After political maneuvering Stigand was granted the rich diocese of Winchester in 1047 while he kept occupying the diocese Elmham against canonical law until 1052 when the diocese was granted to his brother. Again after much political maneuvering Stigand was appointed archbishop of Canterbury by the after his predecessor was condemned to exile. Because his predecessor was not deprived of his see by papal decree Stigand was summoned to Rome which he refused, subsequently the archbishop was excommunicated.

To make matters worse there have been consistent rumors Stigand's pallium was granted by the brief anti pope Benedict X who was deposed soon after. Not only this but Stigand also kept occupying the rich diocese of Winchester against canonical law or papal approval. Again one of the many reasons for the subsequent papal excommunication. Stigand however remained undisturbed despite all this and continued to perform his duties while remaining political active in English affairs. His political maneuvering brought him so far that he was even installed as adviser to king Edward.

Stigand was present at the deathbed of King Edward and performed the rites even under excommunication. He also support his successor Harold as king of England. Perhaps this prompted the papacy to support the pretender William to seek an opportunity to get rid of its troublesome archbishop. And to Stigand's dismay it was not Harold who won the battle but William. The aging archbishop however submitted to William however after a failed attempt to put Edgar Etheling on the throne. Though nominally loyal to William now, Stigand is only loyal to what is best for himself.

    Odo de Troyes
    COMES TRECORUM ET MELDIANUM

    Born 1041 (25).
Titles: Count of Troyes and Meaux (in pretense).
Status: Married, to Adelaide de Normandie (born 1030).
Children: Étienne de Blois (born 1062).

    Traits (6):

    +2 Duels.
    +1 Charisma.
    +1 Wealth.
    +2 Survival.

    Supine:
    - Submissive: This character is the sort of person others can easily walk all over. On the other hand, they're generally regarded as beneath suspicion, and if they ever find their spine they could easily strike back without their foes seeing it it coming. -1 to Charisma, -1 Battles, +1 to assassination & escape rolls.

The grandson of the redoubtable Odo de Blois, who attempted to become king twice and failed as many times. The lords of Blois, the said count's brood, are quarrelsome and prone to disregard any laws, divine or earthly, and, such, inheritances, lordships and kindred were always fickle. Thusly, nothing new under the sun when Theobald, count of Blois, plainly usurped his nephew's counties of Troyes and Meux, forcing him into a landless, and rather miserable, existence. Odo was lucky enough to be married to Adelaide of Normandy, the only sister of William the Bastard, and who was more than ten years his senior, twice married before she even landed in Odo's arms, so to speak. Adelaide not only was a grown woman, but also she held claims to the county of Aumale, in Normandy, making her a landed lady on her own right. Since he was robbed of his inheritance, Odo basically remains part of his brother-in-law's court, some kind of overgrown parasite leeching of the Bastard and living at his expense. Worse, Odo has an overblown concept of his own dignity and persona, style refering himself as count, despite holding no land at his name. Blois fought at Hastings, under his brother-in-law's banner. Now, he expects to receive lands from the defeated Saxons and for his wife to finally be formally acknowledged countess of Aumale.

A rather vain and weak-willed man, Odo is completely dominated by Adelaide, who has him on a leash. The young count is dashingly handsome, blonde and blue-eyed, but also rather short, something that irks him considerably. Besides his physical appearance, Odo has no remarkable traits whatsoever, save perhaps, his apetite for meat and ale, which could turn him into a morbidly obese man shall he stop hunting, riding and fighting on a daily basis. He's completely loyal to his wife, posibly for the fear of being publicly castrated if he wasn't. A son was born to the couple a few years before William the Bastard dared to cross the waters to claim England's crown; a son named after Odo's father.

    William Rufus.

    Born 1056.
    Status: Single.
    Children: None.

    Temperament:
    - Ill-Tempered:
This character is ornery and seems to explode at the slightest provocation. While they've gotten into enough fights to toughen them up, a person who's as easily baited as a bull that sees red won't make a good commander. +1 Duels, -1 Battles.

The third son of William of Normandy and Mathilde of Flanders. An unruly princeling with a mop of reddish hair and weird eyes, one being green and the other oddly dark, like charcoal. He's a rather brazen and wild child, prone to pranks, mischief and constant quarrelling with his siblings. Rowdy and ruddy, he has been aptly nicknamed Rufus; but it could also be a reference to his already mercurial and ornery temperament. The boy enjoys the companionship of his many hounds and aiming his bow at the Lord's creations, having a real penchant for hunting, despite his young age.

    Robert, Count of Mortain

From left to right, Odo of Bayeux, William the Bastard and Robert, Count of Mortain.

    ROBERT, COUNT OF MORTAIN

Robert of Mortain is the youngest of William of Normandy's siblings born from the union of Herluin dear Conteville and Herlava of Falaise.

In 1049, after that banishment of Count Werlenc, Robert was awarded the title of Count Mortain. This was a position born from William's desire to see the Breton border of his Duchy in the hands of a loyal subject.

This position of importance and the years of Robert's support for his brother and liege through the various wars of his reign, saw Robert make it to Hastings as one of the only tried and tested warriors of William's Companions.

    Age: Born 1031
Status: Married to Matilda de Montgomery (Born 1034)
Children: William de Mortain (Born 1059), Agnes de Mortain (Born 1060), Denise de Mortain (Born 1061), Emma de Mortain (Born 1057)

    Traits(6):
    +3 Battles (2 Trait, 1 Temperament)
    +3 Logistician
    +1 Pillager

    Temperaments:
    Sanguine

    - Confident
This character is very self-assured, brimming with confidence and difficult to shake even under pressure. However, taken to an extreme, they can show a suicidal disregard for their life and the lives of others, and fail to take...well, failure into account when planning. +1 battle rolls, +1 to rout rolls against this character.

    Brian de Bretagne

    Brian de Bretagne.

    BRIAN DE BRETANGE

Brian de Bretagne is a Breton noble, the son of Count Odo of Penthièvre. As one of William's Companions, he accompanied the Duke of Normandy in his Conquest of England, commanding the Breton troops on the right flank at the Battle of Hastings.

Despite his relatively young age, he is grim faced and older looked, and considered quite unattractive with his hitosis and his rotten teeth. As a Breton, he shirks Norman shaving custom and instead wears a large mustache and shoulder length hair typically tied back into a pony tail. He is typically silent and cold, and is not renowned for being a sociable man.

Having had some skill on a horse Richard joined the Norman invasion as a 26 year old cavalryman. He rode at the battle of Hastings, earning such a distinction that William himself made the 26 year old a full knight. A distinction that had not yet befallen the lad.

Giffard rewarded Richard further by giving him his own lands to administer. Talbot summoed his wife, Gunnore of Gournay(b.1050) his children, Hugo(b. 1070) and Godfried Tablot(.b1075) to join him on his lands.

William I (c. 1028 – 9 September 1087), usually known as William the Conqueror and sometimes William the Bastard, was the first Norman King of England, reigning from 1066. A descendant of Rollo, he was Duke of Normandy (as William II) from 1035 onward. After a long struggle to establish his power, by 1060 his hold on Normandy was secure, and he launched the Norman conquest of England six years later. The rest of his life was marked by struggles to consolidate his hold over England and his continental lands and by difficulties with his eldest son.

William was the son of the unmarried Robert I, Duke of Normandy, by Robert's mistress Herleva. His illegitimate status and his youth caused some difficulties for him after he succeeded his father, as did the anarchy that plagued the first years of his rule. During his childhood and adolescence, members of the Norman aristocracy battled each other, both for control of the child duke and for their own ends. In 1047 William was able to quash a rebellion and begin to establish his
authority over the duchy, a process that was not complete until about 1060. His marriage in the 1050s to Matilda of Flanders provided him with a powerful ally in the neighbouring county of Flanders. By the time of his marriage, William was able to arrange the appointments of his supporters as bishops and abbots in the Norman church. His consolidation of power allowed him to expand his horizons, and by 1062 William was able to secure control of the neighbouring county of Maine.

In the 1050s and early 1060s William became a contender for the throne of England, then held by the childless Edward the Confessor, his first cousin once removed. There were other potential claimants, including the powerful English earl Harold Godwinson, who was named the next king by Edward on the latter's deathbed in January 1066. William argued that Edward had previously promised the throne to him, and that Harold had sworn to support William's claim. William built a large fleet and invaded England in September 1066, decisively defeating and killing Harold at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. After further military efforts William was crowned king on Christmas Day 1066, in London

    Aged 36 in 1066

    Bishop of Bayeux

Younger Half-brother of William, Duke of Normandy and King of England

Odo was born as the first son of Herluin de Conteville by his marriage to Duke Robert's mistress, Herleva, and was born only a handful of years after Herleva and Robert's bastard, William. His younger brother, Robert, was born a year after him. At the age of nineteen, he was made Bishop of Bayeux by the new duke, his half-brother William. He started construction of a cathedral there at Bayeux, and it was there that Harold Godwinson was forced to swear an oath which he later broke. Odo attended the council of Lillebonne, and was the one to find ships with which William could cross the channel. He was seen at Hastings, carrying a bloody club, "encouraging the boys."
