The Greeks have long considered themselves above most people, indeed it was them that termed the outsider the "barbarians" for who could understand the bar-bar-bar language of these unwashed and unwanted folk who lived in the forest and steppes. The Romans , Carthagian's and Peoples of the East, each of these nations had there own cultures which the greek's respected , although it was in no way as learned as the greeks [from the greeks prespective].

With the lands of Egypt , the peoples of the greeks had long traded , and so they hoped to do so again, in this new age, for most greeks were a sea faring people , which is why most colonies had branched out across the mediterranean , from the pillars of Hercules to the Hellespont making cities such as Massalia [on the gaulic coast] to the Ionic greeks who lived on the west coast of asia minor ,to small colonies within egypt . The Greek's had in there exploratory learning even reached the black seas and spoke with the scythians who lived beyond, and negotiated with the peoples on that distance coast , to provide Athens with grain.



The peoples of the Diadochi , were still perhaps a problem to be accessed and needed to be approached with great caution , for had not the sons of Macedon & Persia {the Selucids} in one time or other tried to subject the greeks people to there whims? To offset such problems the greeks sought better connections with the peoples of pontus and Armenia , where perhaps some of the ionic greeks had begun to influence them , so much so, that , the greeks could even call them near civilized ......or at least civilized enough to be welcomed to the greek table



Athens.....remained a troubling sore spot , with its democractic leanings replacing kingship, a change perhaps brought about due to the vast amount of people it needed for its navy , were-as some places, the greeks had two kings , like in Sparta. Such a government of athens remained a ever present threat to the old greek powers ....Sparta and the Peloponnesian League, had put them in there place before, and so must it be done again to prevent such madness spreading.

Each of the greek lands , had its own pride and culture , but Athens had to be taken back into the greek fold , whatever the cost. As for outsiders,.... all were welcome for trade, for was not trade the spice of life, and with each new exchange , the greek culture, would be given out to the world , so that others , could see the light of civilization, instead of those still living in mud huts that the greek people looked down on.
