Either Horse archers as they can shoot at enemy infantry, chase routing units, avoid enemy cavalry and carry out flank charges. Or swordsmen as swords are fast, no wrse agaainst cavlry than spears (Vanilla), have quite high damage and the units that use them (mainly knights) are heavily armoured.

This is a highly subjective question. The best unit for what purpose? If you're playing a siege assault, horse archers will not be nearly as useful as, say, Janissary Heavy Infantry. On the other hand if you're in a wide open battlefield, your horse archers will probably be more "efficient" in terms of kill/death ratios. If you're facing a large group of high-tier archers, however, you may want to Heavy Cavalry or at least a heavier horse archer (Dvors). Against a large heavy cavalry army, pikemen will be your best friend. So in that sense, there are many possible answers to your question.

Venetian heavy infantry are the best heavy infanty, do a custom battle, play as vangarian guard, dismounted gothic knights, and the jannisariys all agains veneitan heavy inf on vh and the venetians win, i did this ten times as both sides on vh
archers i would guess sherwood archers.

    gunpowder :cossak muskets i think
cav: i would say tsars guard but alot of people tend to disagree with me

My favorite units are the Sherwood archers. There anti armor capabilities, hiding anywhere and enormous range, accuracy, damage, and speed make them a thumbs up for any army. I've yet to see a case where Sherwood archers are ineffective. Seriously, they do like double the damage of the highest tier longbowman a good 50% further range and a kill per arrow ratio that's frighteningly sick. Other than the difficultly in getting them and fielding an army of them they rock.

Yeah, totally depends on the situation you're using them in and the enemy that you are fighting. Very complicated question.

I do love the Venetian Heavy Infantry against armored christian foes. The armor piercing hammers work wonders!

Against knights, jinettes or horse archers. Russia has some of the best horse archers hands down.

Well, these are my favorites for each category:

horse archer: Varidotai (sp?) in my Byzantine campaign do really well.

light cavalry: Jinettes, easily. Alan light cavalry is nice as well.

heavy cavalry: Lancers for performance, Gendarmes for availability/cost.

spearman: Italian Spear Militia, no contest really.

crossbow: Any type of pavise crossbow.

archer: Yeoman archers (until they fix the armor for retinue longbowmen).

javelin: Almugahavars (sp?) easily. They're great in melee too.

    pikeman: Tercio Pikemen, Swiss Pikemen.

swordsman: Sword and Buckler men, and plain old dismounted Chivalrics.

gunpowder: Musketeer. They all perform very well.

    2-hander: Highland Nobles.

artillery: Culverin. Accurate, cheaper than basiliks (basiliks seem like a waste to me)

I abosultely love Gothic knights both dis. and on horseback but I have to say Venetian Heavy Infantry are the best heavy infantry unit in the game.

Scots guard are just overpowered. They are the best (from what I've done) infantry in the game thrashing Gothic Knights and Venetian Heavy Infantry. In addition to that they are great long bowman and very well armoured.

A pretty good list, although I'd count the Sipahis as slightly better than the Byzantine HA.

Jinetes and Lancers are very good, but I think Papal Guard actually holds the spear throne .

As for pikemen, I find the Danish Ogduvaers (something) to be among the best pikemen. They have very good armour for pikemen. 2 hander would be as, I said before, the JHI.

Those are just my favorites not necessarily the best.

And I count Obudaers (sp?) as 2-handers (halberds).
