Is it just me, or do those 'advanced graphical techniques' look SUSPICIOUSLY like Rome Total War?

    Thats because it is RTW.
The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be used until they try and take it away.

Thermophylae must be the most overhyped battle in all history. Its value on propagandastic, cultural and historical basis certainly overshadows the actual facts of the event by alot.

You have 7000 men defending a highly defensible position which prevents being outflanked and offers only a gap of some 300 metres which were protected by a wall. The battle was not so much a field battle but a siege assault and that's how the result should be measured. And for such kind of assaults it is actually not uncommon for a vastly outnumbered foe to last for days against all odds (Alamo, Tyre, etc, etc. etc. ). The Greeks lasted for 3-4 days after which their position was compromised and they were being dealt with easily.

I found esspecially Peter Connolley's description of events rather eyeopening in that the Greeks while being courageous acted actually quite stupid when facing tactical dilemmas and the Persians were actually the more professional soldiers who were overcome under very lucky circumstances.
"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "

Well, if you compare Thermopylae to a siege assault, then you could compare the pathway that the persians used to flank the greeks as a "trojan horse", so nevertheless their position was completely compromised, but even as the other greeks were sent away, the Spartans fought to the bitter end, taking with them 40 to 50 thousand persians.

Mangalore: I don't think that comparison with a siege assault is quite right. After all the Greeks didn't fight from behind a wall, or on top of one, or with any other defenses. The wall that they did have merely limited the front on which the Persians could attack them. Maybe you could compare it to a siege assault after a 300 meter wide breech has been made in the defenses.

The Greek position certainly limited the ability of the Persians to bring great numbers to bear, but the fact remains that the Persians not only failed to beat the Greeks in a head-to-head fight, but couldn't even inflict enough casualties to win by attrition. In effect the Greek phalanx was as impervious to their attacks as the stone wall next to them - which really is impressive.

In terms of strategic value the battle probably wasn't very important - but it did signal Spartan commitment to the war, which was crucial.

And don't forget that the Battle provided a good story for a bad movie.

At least because of that it should be remembered.

Little off topic are we? Thermopylae was the battle that inspired and rallied the Greek forces that were victorious at Platea. There!

I agree with Dimebagho on this one.

The thing that makes Thermopylae so popular is the fact that 300 Spartans (and 700 Thespians) stayed behind and well, died for their country. They gave their lives for Sparta, and the whole of Greece. They wouldn't be oppressed like the other conqoured nations...

Besides, even when you think Thermopylae is 'overhyped', we all know it is overhyped... but we just don't care!

I for one think it's a great battle, and a good base for many movies, books and mods!
