    Default Specialty Siege Army

I've done half a dozen various searches, but they've all come up nil. Does anybody employ specialist Siege armies? With the army traditions, such a thing is very realistic...has anybody done it?

What are your ideas for a Siege Specialist army composition? Off the top of my head all I can think of is the best arty available (at least 3 units), heaps of very heavy infantry, and a few missile units (use them on top the walls, or behind your melee lines), no Cav unless maybe just the general.

I do build them, not quite as you suggest. 8-10 archers, 4 heavy defensive infantry, 4 heavy shock infantry if I can find some. 2 heavy cavalry for flanking within the city.

The archers are key, especially once you can recruit high quality ones. Secondly you want your shock infantry to be well armored. The archers line up perpendicular to a wall corner and shoot down the length of the wall, while your infantry attack that point. Ideally on top of an arrow tower so you can neutralize its control quickly. With archers shooting the unprotected rear of the defenders, taking the wall is much less troublesome. Then your fresh infantry can take to the streets. Simply put, you don't need siege machines slowing your army if you can field heavy swords/falxes/axes, heavy spears, and some sort of quality archer. The cavalry is just there to stop the city fight from getting messy.

Yeah, I usually use 2 variations of my army, one with more cavalry and less ranged, the opposite for the siege variation, depending on the faction I also vary the of type of infantry, favoring mobility over survivability and vice versa. For example less phalangites and more hoplites or swordsmen for sieges so I can more rapidly envelop opponents after I breach the perimeter, for my standing battles army I might do the opposite, since I usually get more heavier phalangites for example to hold the line for my more numerous cavalry to be the hammer to my anvil.

@ablebodie - Wow, never would have thought of an "archer snipe" siege force. That's pretty cool! I've been away from RII for a while but am coming back to it...I'll keep this in mind and give it a go.

I think I came up with the archer heavy siege comp fighting horse nomads. It's pretty versatile and fun, I hope you find some enjoyment in it!

Bring 2-4 ballistas. Easy mode. Target walls with enemy units on it. 4-5 range units(archers as they can shoot over your units pretty well, as well as fire arrows for wooden towers, ballistas for towers) then the rest can be whatever. I've used even pike armies with this setup and it works.

If you're going to actually seige them until they come out, use a low-medium sized army 5-10 to initiate seige with a full stack behind to support.

Someone mentioned using a "baggage train" army that follows ur main "field" army in one of these thread. Say if ur Macedon have ur follow army general utilizing camp and logistic skills with 2 ballista and up to 5/6 infantry units, hoplites and swords are decently effective on walls and easily replinished. That gives you 11-12 slots to just fill up with mercenary units for cannon fodder and sack em after u win. This saves you from having to waste ur elite units from the main army supporting in the siege.

Ι believe baggage train isn't working any more though.
