Transcript of voicemod? I'm curious as to what the units are saying.

I feel that knowing what the units are saying would add a lot to the immersion experience. Is there some sort of file of the translations?

Whenever Greek units pick up siege ladders: "La-ve-tae Klimachas!"
--> Sounds to me like they're saying "Lava's gay, clean my gas!"

Whenever Greek units taunt the enemy at the start of the battle: "E-tae pae-tes HELLENON!"
--> Sounds to me like they're saying "Eat this pie that's from HELEN'S MOM!"

Some terminology to give you an idea of some of the things being said;
Lachen (lok-en); Army/Soldiers, literally means 'Children' though
Epos (ep-os or ep-us); Cavalry/Horsemen, literally just 'Horse'
Neitom (nee-tam); A form of 'Neitos'; just 'Soldiers', but specifically infantry
Ambu/Ambos (am-boo/am-bos); Related to 'ambush', refers to ranged attackers of various types, and skirmishers (who would be ambushers)
Ameno (am-ee-no; as in 'amino acid'); 'Attack'
Basbh (bazb); 'Kill' or 'Slaughter'; used in many respects, was also a war cry
Keltoi (kelt-oy); Celts, specifically Gauls often (but not always), still in common use in Gaul at the time of EB as a name for the entirety of the race (including Belgae and southern Britons, who were not counted as Gauls); meant to display a sense of unity
Galla (gal-ah); Gauls
Oban (U-ban); Rally/Reform
Kamros (Kim-ros); Friends/Comrades;

What is being said or shouted is what alex33 posted in the spoilers, but don't rely on it as being accurate; epos does mean horse and neitos nearly means a soldier or warrior (it should probably be *neits) but ignore the other translations. The team are currently working on a new version as I said.

Not so much, because the book doesn't deal extensively with the actual grammar of Gaulish. Ward and Matasović were probably more important sources.

You guys have done some fantastic work on this, with scholarly research and everything. I felt compelled to rep you for this.

One question, though: some of the new voice responses by units on the battle map sound off-putting to me, partly because some of them do not sound like they were recorded in a studio with quality equipment, and also because the pronunciation sounds very different and/or awkward compared to previous ones. For instance, how well do we know how the word "hetairoi" (i.e. companions) was pronounced and which vowels were stressed? For some reason I really liked the older version a lot more, not just because the sound quality was better, but also because the pronunciation sounded smoother, more believable, and the voice actor even had a lot more oomph, gusto, and aggression in his voice. It sounded like he was angry at you for something and about to kick your ass for it.

Greek diacritics. Granted I've not played EB recently so I don't know how the new version sounds in game.

Thanks for sharing that link! The diacritics indeed provide a useful tool for knowing which vowel was stressed or not.

The print books I have are rather old and perhaps out of date now - J. Morris Jones Welsh Grammar Historical and Comparative and F W O'Connell's Grammar of Old Irish both of which try to reconstruct earlier forms. Matasović's Etymological Dictionary of Proto-celtic is ridiculously expensive. Online there are sources like Ward's checklist of proto-Celtic lexical items (I was pointed to it from a mailing list, don't know if it's still about now) and if you're interested in Celtiberian, Carlos Jordán Cólera's article from E-Keltoi no. 6. Even Wikipedia has grammatical tables for (some) Gaulish nouns. Away from the Celts, Carl Darling-Buck's Grammar of Oscan and Umbrian is another old book. I don't know of many printed books on Lusitanian that aren't in Spanish or Portuguese, I've read various articles online in particular by Blanca Maria Prósper and also Francisco Villar.

I have largely the same thoughts!
