Default Medieval Kingdoms Total War: The Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia (REVAMP)

    THE ARMENIAN KINGDOM OF CILICIA

A new kingdom in Anatolia, the Cilician kingdom is the result of one dynasty's ambition. Building on years of successful diplomacy and sheer force of will, the Roupenid lords of Armenia found their crown by putting the powerful Armenian barons to heel and alternating their loyalties. It is with the newly founded frankish kingdoms in the Levant and the Holy Church in Rome that King Levon found his most useful allies, bartering the independence of the Armenian Church for a crown from the Pope in Rome.

Levon was quick to find what made Frankish societies successful and implemented sweeping reforms across the new kingdom. Adopting the frankish legal and administrative structure, the nominally subservient Nakharars became Parons (''Barons''), vassals of the king of Armenia and French courtly offices were introduced for better management of the realm. Castles and fiefs were granted to Monastic orders to better protect the borders of Cilicia. European concepts of chivalry were adopted and jousts became a staple for nobles. Cities were granted greater autonomy and trading rights were handed to the three major Italian maritime republics to foster growth and prosperity, with large foreign merchant quarters building up along the coast. The fostering of urban communities further segmented Armenian society, with the bourgenses (bourdjes) gaining an increasing role compared to the traditional farming communities (rustici).

The transition from a traditional army to a frankish army was executed from top to bottom. The traditional office of Sparapet was replaced by the French Goundesdapel (''Constable''), the new leader of the Armenian armies. The new class of anointed knights, the Aspetner, became the elite force of Cilicia, fighting much like the Franks in the Levant. The armies now almost entirely revolved around the nobility and their household troops, further supplemented by irregulars from the Armenian highlands and communal militias.

Those are tied to the Holy Order building line, which is tied to the Catholic tree. So yes, they will have access to Holy Order units. There might be something else for that in the Crusader factions building trees, but I'm not sure about it considering how intimately tied to the Roman church it was.

Thank you for the kind words. Even the early era should receive an update in the near future to make the faction a bit closer to some of the 13th century manuscripts.

Thanks a lot man Great stuff. I just wish we had a little access to these beauties.
"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."

Very cool roster. Some of those helmets look like something you'd see during the Hellenistic era, I didn't know those designs were still in use by the 13th century, it makes this faction look very unique.

I also found that helmet design very eccentric, like the things you'd see in Victorian era paintings of antiquity. But these helmets come from 13th century manuscripts :

Since we love unique things in our mod team, beautiful and ugly alike, they obviously made the cut.

Really looking forward to playing this, as i am a Cilician Armenian myself. Great work on the detail.

Only thing is the flag in the early era should be slightly different

This flag was used from 1198-1219 under the Rubenid Dynasty

And the later flag from 1226-1341 under the Hethumid Dynasty.

The second one is definitely more stylized and seemingly based on Leo II of the Hethumid dynasty.

Which Leo are you referring too exactly? it gets a bit confusing due to Cilicia being a principality from 1080-1198 and then a kingdom from 1198-1375. So the kings after 1198 were both the first and the second if they took the name of an older king, for example Leo II was also Leo I as he was the first king of Cilicia after it became a Kingdom from 1198 but also the second as there was a Leo before him than ruled from 1129-1140 when it was still a principality. Leo I and Leo I (II) where of the Rubenid Dynasty while Leo II (III) was of the Hethumids. What gets more confusing is that most Cilician kings had about three separate names, for example Leo I (II) was also called Levon or Leon, both an Armenian and European sounding name i guess.

if you look at the Wiki article showing all the kings and princes it shows how they where numbered.
