Penelope is the product of a pureblood family, her heritage stretching back all the way to the 11th century. Her lineage includes several high serving members of the Ministry of Magic and other prominent witches and wizards famous for deeds accomplished. As of late, the Scarrow family had passed into obscurity and disunity. Several of the lesser accomplished Scarrows found the promises of Lord Voldemort rather enticing. They had become his Death Eaters, some of them. Others, such as Penelope, resisted. The situation resembled that of the Black family. Penelope's father, Cornelius Scarrow, was tragically killed while she was attending school when a accident containing a dragon spiraled out of control. A widow now, Penelope's mother, Margaret, entered a state of sadness so deep she was rendered almost useless in every regard. Her recovery has been slow, but she remains and ever-melancholic presence in her daughter's life.
Hogwarts Class of 1959. Penelope was originally sorted into Ravenclaw House when she entered Hogwarts in 1951. While she showed a propensity for spells early in her academic career, her speciality in curses left many of her colleagues wondering whether or not she would have been better served in Slytherin. Her natural intelligence quickly led to her proficiency in other subjects, but she shined in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Unlike may who excelled in that class, she was truly driven by her hate of the Dark Arts. Her father having been maimed in the wars started by Grindewald, she had a strong prejudice against dark wizards and witches. After her graduation from Hogwarts and the passage of the appropriate OWLS and NEWTs, she was accepted based upon her application for the Office of the Aurors. At first she was expected not to take part in risky operations; she spent the majority of her time researching cases, spells, or legal precedents. As legal ramifications fell by the wayside and as her department grew more concerned, she was cast into the front lines. It was a role she found completely acceptable.
Personal Life
During her time at Hogwarts, Penelope was a member of many academic societies and clubs, but she did not limit herself to academics. She knew, given her chosen career choice, that she must develop the body as well as the mind. She engaged in some athletic pursuits, playing Chaser for her House in quidditch and while she gained no great renown as a player, performed just as well as anyone else. Where she really stuck out was in the Dueling Club. To the extent that they were permitted to use curses against one another in a duel, Penelope often triumphed. She was the winner of several school-wide tournaments and several ribbons adorned her small space in the Ravenclaw Tower near her bed. All of these learned skillswould be useful to her later on in life.
After she went to work for the ministry she met and fell in love with a man several years her senior, Daniel Scrubs, a man whose parents were muggles. It was a scandal within her family, with some of them offering support but many regard her as somehow betraying the old family traditions of marrying only those with the proper lineage. She disregarded these nay sayers and stated her life with Daniel. Everything changed in 1970 with the rise of he who must not be named. Daniel had been working in the Department of Mysteries when he became privvy to a very interesting prophecy. Voldemort had been operating for only a few months, and his initial wave of attacks were underway. After he had recorded and stored the prophecy regarding some who were not yet even born and a certain dark wizard who seemed as of yet assured of no victory, he was visited by some masked Death Eaters. He refused to hand over the prophecy, as per the dark lord's wishes. Daniel, who was a man of high intelligence but low self defense skills, was no match for the assassins. He was discovered in his office, within the ministry itself, horribly murdered. The murder of her husband strengthened Penelope's resolve.
