Thread: Is this problem worth using my warranty on?

Default Is this problem worth using my warranty on?

I've had my current pc for some months now and I've been using sound from the PC itself using the headphone audio on the front of the PC to plug my headphones into... well just the other day I lost sound and so I pulled my headphones out and looked at the jack and its slightly bent forward. It must've of bent whilst inside the audio socket and it's bent whatever's inside it as well as the jack itself. So now it's impossible to get any sound from it. So basically should I just buy some speakers and use audio from them and leave it broken or do I send the PC to its manufacturers which are based quite a way from my location to see if they can fix it? Is that even worth the hassle of sending it? What would you do?

Hope the problem made sense I don't have too much know how about the insides of computers... thanks.

Do you not have one at the back of your computer?

My guess is that they will say the warranty is voided due to operator error or something in more lawyerly gibberish. Before doing anything involving sending -- contact the manufacturer or the business where purchased and inquire about the issue.

It may be a simple one of replacing the jack socket. If you can do this yourself, it will save both time and money. Oh, and unplug everything and probably disconnect a few things as well before messing around. I could say that experience is a good teacher here, but that may be too much information.

There is but I think that's used for the speakers or at least should be. I do get sound when I plug my headphones into it but I did some research into using it and I found this.

    Headphone load impedance 16Ω ~ 600Ω
    Line output impedance 330Ω
    Line/Aux input impedance 10KΩ

Unfortunately I don't know how to do that. I might look around for a Diy tutorial.

My PC is also restarting randomly without any prior warning it just restarts and because this problem only started after the sound issues I'm wondering if the two are connected. I did have a big windows update that took quite a while recently so it could be to do with that. Is it possible that the headphone jack bending inside the front socket which I think caused the front socket to break has any connection with the PC restarting randomly or is that just a coincidence?

Uh well, you should be fine if you plug it into the back. I always plug mine into the back.

You're getting sound either from your motherboard or from a sound card. The motherboard (I suspect you don't have a sound card) supplies the sound to both front and back of your machine.

If you want to do more research about it, (I honestly don't see much of a point unless your headphones are worth hundreds of dollars, and in that case you'd be better off getting a dedicated soundcard anyway), look up the make and model of your motherboard. You can use something like speccy for that.

I strongly suspect that you will be perfectly fine, as they probably knew headphone users would use the jacks.

Is it okay to leave the front jack as it is then and not get it fixed? I've started using speakers now and so the sound is fine now. What would you do?

My own desktop is still worth a couple thousand today and the front jack gives me fuzzy feedback, I use the back jack. I do have a dedicated soundcard, but even when I use my motherboards jack the sound still works just fine with headphones.

Moral of the story, not everything is perfect, and you may just cause yourself more problems by shipping it on a roughly driving truck which jars components loose or damages them.

You have same issue with my own mobo. I dont know what stuff my kids put in the front jack panel so I can only use the one at the back, alternating whether I want to use speakers (daytime) or headphones (night).

    No problem whatsoever.

Actually it's better (for me) to use the one at the back because it's directly connected to motherboard rather than the front which is for casing.

The one in the front is from the casing itself, so any warranty (if any) is from the casing, not moterboard supplier.
