    Default The Tournament at Highgarden

In celebration of his marriage to Olenna Redwyne, Lord Luthor Tyrell hosts a grand tournament at Highgarden. Luthor himself enters the lists and announces that the price for the right to tilt shall be 2,000 golden dragons to contribute to the winner's purses. Luthor himself contributes 10,000 to the cause. Tyrell banners fluttered in the early morning breeze and HIghgarden stood green and lush against the horizon. Luthor's pavilion stood proud and tall amidst the field, the tilts had been set up in such a way that fresh grass would always be available for Knights participating in the tournament. As a result, ground up to a mile away had been reserved by Lord Tyrell for his own personal use in the tournament. Few other venues could boast of these ideal conditions.

    THE LISTS

    Lord Luthor Tyrell, +1 Joust
    Ser Godric Baratheon
    Lord Robar Redwyne
    Ser Willas Lake

For jousts, you do two D20 rolls, one for each player.

    1-5 miss
    5-10 glancing blow, body
    11-16 - shield hit, good
    16-19 - shield hit, flawless

Lord Tarly arrives with his three remaining sons after having exiled Kevan.

    Randyll Tarly,
    Mace Tarly, +1 Survival.
Dickon Tarly, +2 Survival, +3 Duels.

They bring 15.000 dragons to the purse, not wishing to be outdone by other contributing lords.

(this is before Kevan joins the KG.)
Kevan arrives some time later, even though he had been banished by his father, in his eyes he was only banished from his father's lands and not the Tyrell lands.

Lord Luthor Tyrell threw the wine skin to the ground and had his squire hand him his helmet. "For the glory of House Tyrell!" he shouted, although muffled. He scanned across the lists, he glanced Bracken. Very well, another Riverlander would go to the mud! He spurred his horse onwards once the horn had sounded but the jousts did not in any way go as he intended. He had never been unhorsed, but Bracken's aim was steadier than his own. Perhaps owing to too much wine...

Soon he found himself congratulating the victor, disappointed, but not overly vexed. A feast awaited after all.

    ---------------

Across the field some time later, hearing of the death of their lord, a band of Crakehall men gathered together and noisily made their way to Hightower's tent. They were intent on murdering him. Soon a melee ensued outside the tent - it seemed to be a miniature full scale battle as Hightower men clashed with Crakehall men. The ground was soon littered with corpses. Hightower escaped unscathed.

Robar Redwyne had rode in a gallant armor, all gilded and covered with filigree, delicate vines engraved and inlaid over the steel surface. He was, howered, unhorsed in the first round, to his shame, even breaking his crest in the fall. The lance of the mistery knight, a thin fellow it seemed, had aimed true and hit him right in the chest in the first tilt, which threw off his balance and manage to make him lose all focus in the next two tilts, which caused his final unhorsing. Lord Redwyne acknowledged his defeat by fancily bowin before his victor. He then left to change his golden armor for a golden cloth gown and an ellaborate necklace, after which he took a seat with his sister. His brother-in-law, Tyrell, fared barely better, being unhorsed the same round than Redwyne.

Upon hearing of the Crakehall men's violence towards Hightower after the latest tilt, Lord Tyrell orders the city watch to intervene on behalf of Lord Hightower. With their combined strength, they soon subdue the headstrong, treacherous Crakehall men. Several were left alive. He quickly dismounted and had a squire bring him his sword. "I demand an explanation for this behavior. Who among you, if any gave this order to attack my Lord Hightower?"

Lord Tarly sat upon the balustrade near the other lords present but not competing. From his seat he spotted a familiar face, his exilled son Kevan made an appearance on the field. Alone no one to aid him or anything else. It angered Tarly thinking he had been clear but in the back of his mind it was oddly satisfying. Knowing that Kevan was headstrong enough to go and defy his father because he was not on Tarly land.. By now it was time for the first tilt, by some weird coincidence it was Uthor Hightower versus Randyll. Brother to Alys Hightower and the soon to be wife of Randyll.

In a heartbeat it was over. Randyll went down and soon it was clear he lay in a puddle of blood. Sam simply sat there, frozen in time. His oldest boy and heir Randyll laid dying on the floor. Mace and Dickon Tarly rushed upon the field and held their brother as he was choking in a puddle of his own blood. Mace was fighting back the tears as his hero laid there dying. Dickon was more reserved though, as reserved as he may be it was no denying he felt part of himself die on the field. He rose and looked towards his father whom he instantly locked eyes with. Both were devastated but knew someone had to answer for this. Dickon nodded towards his father and made his way back to the tent where he was situated before his own tilt would begin. Mace on the other hand cried as a pup at the sight of his brother, refusing to let him go as men came to take his body away. On the Balustrade Tarly now stood up and made way to the section where his servants held camp. He retrieved Hearts Bane there and went to Mace's tent finding it empty as his tilt was about to begin.

Shaken and shocked about the events that had just unfolded Mace was knocked off at record time it seemed. Dickon looked on but the joust was disappointing. Not that he expected much from Mace, Mace was a man of strategy not of actual combat, Much unlike Dickon. It had seemed that the family's honor had to be defended by Dickon. Mace returned with tears running down his face again, feeling anger for such a display of public emotions Dickon felt himself fill with rage. Dickon now stepped onto the field as Mace went to talk to his father.

Dickon started the tilt againt Ser Willas lake filled with anger, anger that caused him to be in a great disadvantage. Forsaking all he had learned he tried to put too much power into the joust resulting in his own downfall. As he bit the dust he kept on hammering his fists into the ground, berserking with rage. As he left the field and entered his tent he threw his helmet of and kicked the stuff inside. Until a voice interrupted. "Are you done yet?" his father asked. It took Dickon by surprise as he thought he was alone. He apologized and regained his calm. "Hightower betrayed us. He went for his throat on purpose." Tarly concluded as Dickon noticed Hearts Bane was on his father's back. "Follow me." Lord Tarly than commanded as he walked outside the tent.

Sam and Dickon Tarly made they way towards Hightower's tent finding it to be surrounded by dead Hightower and Crakehall men. Crakehall's menTarly thought to himself as he looked inside the tent. Empty, damnit he thought. Where could he be? He asked himself. The only other place was near the Tyrell's seeking justice for the obvious Crakehall attempt on his life. Yes Tarly would go to Tyrell as well. As the Tarly men and renitue apperouched the Tyrell tent Tarly roared "Come out HighTower." A small pause ensued. "Face me like a man boy!" he would than shout after there came no reply.

    -------------------------

Kevan Tarly fared no better than his brothers. As he saw Randyll's deminse he froze, much like his father and younger brother Dickon. He looked away as they dragged him off but eventually was the only one to go check up on the corpse while his father and Dickon moved on Hightower. Mace had been restrained by some Tarly servants as Sam had been ashamed enough of his public show of emotions. The Tarly name was defiled now. Especially after what happened at Horn Hill between Kevan and Randyll. Kevan felt regret for that moment. Now he had already inquired after a position in the Kings Guard but by all means he was still the designated heir to Horn Hill now.. Kevan had to set it all aside for his tilt though. Yet again it seemed as if the gods had no favor for the Tarly name today. Kevan was still suffering from a sore ribcage and the emotional strain surely impacted his focus. Thus he also was unseated but thankfully did not receive serious wounds or did he join the seven.

As Baratheon entered the joust, it was significant that he lived up to the legacy of his father. Wearing a similiar armour as 'The Laughing Storm' used to wear it, he would eventually enter the combat against Kevan Tarly, a man, who was more or less considered a lad by Baratheon. While being nontheless nervous that he would eventually miss this time, Ser Godric nontheless managed to deal Tarly a smooth hit in order to unhorse him. Thus, the first round ended faster than the Stormlander Knight had envisioned. After the fight, he would eventually meet with his opponent, while nontheless thanking him for the joust. After all it was the challenge, which Godric seeked.

With Ser Olver Dondarrion as his opponent, Baratheon eventually knew that his next opponent would be a worthy opponent. While though Baratheon was de jure the son of 'The Laughing Storm', Dondarrion would eventually be aware of Godric's legacy.
And thus more eager to prove himself, that he would be able to beat the Baratheon on open field.
Whether it was the nervous atmosphere or just the skill of his opponent - Ser Godric barely realized that he was hit until he felt the sudden pain in his chest. With the lance falling to the ground, Baratheon needed a few moments to recover.
Nontheless he was honored to know that it was out of all contestants Ser Olver, who showed Godric his limits.

As the tourney went on, Ser Godric Baratheon was ready at arms as well, when he heard that the Crakehall men were attempting to attack Lord Hightower. Inquiring Tyrell from where the noise came, he followed the Lord in hopes that the conflict would be settled easily by Tyrell's authority. After all Lord Luthor was the benevolent host of this tourney and Hightower unlikely killed the Crakehall knight on purpose.

Uthor was a little dazed, the events of the day having all unfolded so quickly. He’d killed Tarly in the heat of the joust, his aim proving poor and the lance piercing the throat of his opponent. The shock of killing his brother-in-law sent him into a drunken stupor, and he gorges himself on the strongest wine he could find - thus his aim was even poorer in the next hoist against Crakehall. Again, he left his opponent in a pool of blood, and thus by the time of the last joust he could barely stay atop his mount. Crakehall’s kin had apparently come for vengeance, too, but Hightower’s men were able to spirit him out of the tent and defend him from Crakehall’s butchers. Dazed, drunk and in shock he had collapsed in the tent of his liege lord, Tyrell, and that is where he remained during Tyrell’s confrontation with the would-be assassins.

Ser Hugh wore a muted set of armor, besides the falcon on the right side of his breastplate one could hardly tell he was an Arryn. On the third tilt his horse reared and the old knight took a splinter to the side, tumbling into the dirt. There was an awful amount of blood spilling onto the ground, for a moment Hugh wondered if he’d gotten too old for these things. Beat by a ing Stormlander.. he muttered as he tried to push himself off the floor, a pool of his own blood growing rapidly beneath him. After a moment’s struggle his squire ran into the field and helped the knight to his feet. Wine.. He muttered weakly. Give me the seven damned wine. The squire continued walking him toward the Maester’s tent. Before all my blood is wasted in the dirt.

Rolund had been in his share of jousts in his life, and had ridden against many good men. He still had not expected to draw Lord Tyrell, the host of these festivities, first in the lists. Normally cocky, he suddenly found himself slightly unsettled. What if he hurt the man, or worse? For a brief moment he considered throwing the tilt, riding more to avoid hurting the man than to unhorse him. Then he thought better. He was Ser Rolund Bracken, the Wild Horse. Men knew that name as belonging to a man who knew how to ride and fight. More importantly, women knew that name. At such a publicized event, it would do him no good to give anything less than his best shot at a victory. He cast a brief, casual glance into the crowd for a certain lady of the Riverlands, then slammed his visor down. It was time to ride. The first round went without incident, and he was able to unseat the Lord of Highgarden, as he should have been able to. Then he ran into some Reachman knight he had never heard of, and was promptly unhorsed. He was somewhat consoled by the fact that this Ser Willas Lake continued to the final joust before he was unhorsed, but still quite disappointed with his performance.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Olver Dondarrion had never competed in such a grand tournament event before, and felt somewhat nervous before his first joust began, but as soon as he was mounted and prepared to ride at the other man, he let his worries slip away and his training take over. He himself wore black enamelled armor with the purple lightning bolt of his house emblazoned across the front. Not the most practical harness, but it looked good, and for such events as this, he knew that too was important. From this distance he could not discern any sort of house affiliation on the armor or equipment of his opponent. It didn't particularly matter, of course, merely a matter of curiosity for the young man. He grinned triumphantly as his lance shattered against the other man's armor, as he was too slow to lower his shield, but the celebration was short lived when he turned about and beheld the other knight lying in a steadily growing pool of his own blood. Stricken, Olver rushed over towards his fallen opponent, but before he could get there the man's helmet was off, revealing him to be an older knight, and he was hollering at his squire about wine. Olver smiled slightly, and noticed as the man departed that there was a faint flacon crest on his breastplate. An Arryn then.

By the time the second round came, Olver had witnessed two deaths, both at the hands of Uthor Hightower, and felt a little sick. The first one, the death of the young Tarly heir, had been tragic enough, and the second, Lord Crakehall, was a bloody mess of an affair. Olver couldn't help thinking that could have been his Arryn opponent in the first round. Or him. He eventually found himself read to face his next opponent. Ser Godric Baratheon was a fellow Stormlord, the brother of his Lord Paramound, and also the brother of... someone important to Olver. It was a good chance to prove himself. Quietly, he put the image of Lord Crakehall spouting blood, and lowered his visor. Another victory followed, this one much cleaner, and the third round also went well for the young Dondarrion, though his opponent was an unidentified warrior clad in plain armor, which peaked Olver's interes. The more interesting part of the third round was to see whether Hightower would add to his body count. He, however, was unhorsed by Olver's opponent for the last round, Ser Willas Lake, apparently a Reachman who was now a northerner, or some such thing.

Having already watched Ser Lake defeat three good men, including the deadly Uthor Hightower, Olver approached the combat cautiously. He seemed to recall a habit the man had displayed against both Bracken and Hightower, a sort of last-second adjustment of his lance positioning, to try and get a better hit. He tried it again, and Olver was ready, weaving almost entirely out of the way, while delivering his own sharp blow. In another tilt he did allow a solid hit to his shield, but was finally able to unhorse his opponent, and went to Lord Tyrell to receive his award and congratulations. The next few hours were a blur of feasting and celebration, in the midst of which he heard some rumor about the Crakehall men and Lord Hightower, but could do little, swept up as he was. Finally as the feasting died down he went first to check on the Arryn he had unhorsed, and then sought out Ser Godric Baratheon.

Ser Hugh sat in a bed at his tent, his wounds freshly stitched shut. A large purple, black, and blue pattern of bruising covered near the entirety of his right side. He hair was heavily grayed, and even though his days of youthful conquest were far behind him the knight still kept his hair and beard well trimmed. Hugh saw the man enter his tent, and took a swig of his wine. I should probably thank you, if you had not unhorsed me that killer Hightower might have been my end. He took another gulp, this one deeper. Age will catch you too one day.

Olver approached the graying warrior and extended an arm to clasp - the time-honored greeting of fighting men. "Olver Dondarrion." He offered as a formal introduction "I see your squire was able to get you that wine." He said, gesturing to the skin which Hugh still had in the other hand, relieved that the man seemed well enough to at least make a semblance of a jest, though the material chosen didn't seem a laughing matter to the young Dondarrion. "I'm glad you feel I was of service Ser," he offered with a half bow, feigning bravado. "Indeed, Ser Uthor's luck seemed either rotten or particularly glorious this particular day, depending on what his goal was," he intoned solemnly, trying not to show how unsettled he was by what they had witnessed that day, wondering whether this man had actually seen the horrible scene after the second death, or if he had still been receiving treatment at the time. "I'd dare say age catches us all eventually, but I'm not convinced it's caught you yet," he suggested gallantly, "You still rode a fine tilt, it was not skill on my part but simple misfortune on yours that you fell and wound up in this particular state." He eyed the bandages. "Which I apologize for by the way."
