Vickon Greyjoy's ship Death Whisper beached itself on the island of Pyke. It's black sails were stowed and soon the crew was disembarking. Vickon lowered himself down to the beach using a rope and upon alighting upon the soft sands, took a deep breath. They had taken a few scooners off the Flint Shore. The crews had been taken almost completely unawares. Their cargo was poor, mostly some second rate wine and foodstuffs, woven cloth and wax candles. Half the crew was given to the Drowned One in thanks and the other half were enslaved. Vickon had killed the fat captain of the ship himself after a short duel. Now he had heard that his soft nephew was prostituting the Ironborn to the Greenlanders, bowing and scraping before them in their silks and satins, attempting marriages and desperate dinners on Pyke. It would not stand. What's worse, none had even come. It was an insult that could not be borne. "Let's go." He called to his men, as they made their way to the castle itself.

A horn blared across the waters as an Ironborn longship, bearing the sigil of House Harlaw, came into view of Pyke's harbor. Lord Harrag gazes at the port, spitting on the floor of his ship, Sealskinner, as his aged eyes look at the island of the Greyjoys. He, among other Ironborn lords had grown tired of Lord William Greyjoy, who the Reaver called the Greenland Lover. Once the horn was blared again, the haggard Ironborn bellows at his rowers.

Come on you sea-dogs! Move those oars!

The drum changed its tune seconds later, making the ship turn into battle speed. The warriors grabbed their helmets, placing them upon their heads before slipping their hands into their round shields. Row, row, row, barked Lord Harlaw, as the ship came closer to the seaport. His eyes could see that Vickon Greyjoy's vessel had already parked and was well on their way to Pyke Castle. The coup was well underway and Lord Harlaw doubted the skinny guards of Lord Greyjoy could stop their axes. His helmet was given to him by his eldest son, Harras, who was already dressed for battle. A hundred of their best warriors crowded upon the top deck as the ship came close to the shore of Pyke. The last beat of the drums was made before the Harlaw warriors jumped into the dark waters and made their way ashore.

    ========================

The Harlaw warriors, led by Harrag and his son, Harras, caught up with Vickon Greyjoys men as they approached the main gate of the ancient castle. The gates were firmly closed and stubborn resistance began to be shown as archers upon the walls and towers began firing down. This forced the Ironborn to group up and raise their shields in a tortoise shell formation, escorting Harrag and Harras closer to the Greyjoy formation. They broke off though as Harrag moved over to Vickon.

I think you might need to clean house after this... I doubt these sorry defenders have even seen a salt wife nor even burned down a house for that matter.

"Soft, weak, useless. Grown fat on their own larders and trade. The old ways are dead here." Vickon replied grimly. He clutched his axes in both hands. Raising one to the guard tower, he bellowed out "Open the gates, worthless swine. I must needs speak with my nephew of may grave matters." His crew gave a laugh.
    ----
1-10 = Failure, gates remain closed
11-15 = the guards grudgingly open the gates
16-20 = Critical success, the guards abandon their posts and join Vickon

    0 Charisma
    +1 for backstory?

Rolled a 12, the gates open but the guards and garrison are mostly befuddled as to what is happening. On the one hand they owe loyalty to William, but on the other hand Vickon Greyjoy was his own uncle.

    ---

Vickon and his men strode through the gates and into the courtyard of Pyke. He called out loud. "Come out William, your sweet uncle has returned! You must answer for this miserable state of affairs! Too long have you wasted everyone's time with these frivolities and indulgences of seeking favor among the greenlanders. You have forgotten who you are, and I will remind you. And after your head decorates Pyke's walls, I will lead our people to further glory to wash away the foul stench of your own decadence."

Harrag nods to his son, Harras, pointing to the left side of their formation.

Get every man who claims he is a guard and bring him to the courtyard. The Drowned God will want a sacrifice!

Harras nods and proceeds into the cluster of their warriors, grabbing up fifty their men. Once within the halls of Pyke, Harrag and Harras took their respective sides, moving wood and stone to find every lax guard of William Greyjoy. Vickon was bringing about a necessary change, a much-needed revolution! And the Drowned God was hungry for sacrifices. Certainly these lazy men would serve their Lord of the Deep Waters as worthy sacrifices. They were certainly cowards, Harrag noted, as a group of men threw down their weapons as if children being caught by their parents. There were those who came willingly, others were forced by axe and arm to the central location.

As Harras directed the men, Harrag came up to Vickon, glancing in the direction of the main keep of the castle where William was certainly cowering in fear. He points his Valyrian Steel sword, Nightfall, at the tower.

Might be best to drag him out, Vickon. The boy has certainly soiled his pants... I don't understand how your brother raised such a welp. Better to have drowned him as an infant.

Vickon was losing his patience. He paced back and forth for a while, his boots clicking against the stone slabs that constituted the pavilion. He crossed to where one of the guards stood and buried an axe in his head. As the man began to fall he kicked his axe loose and let the man fall twitching, dying to the ground. "Right, break it down." He ordered. Men rushed forward and began to hack at the dry, wooden gate. Soon splinters were flying, he took the moment of respite to address the men. "The coward will not even come out and face me, this shows he is not fit to rule over us. We need a leader of greater quality than this."

The doors fell in short order as large holes were punched into it. Less wood for the fleet he planned on constructing, but oh well. Soon Vickon found himself on the threshold of his family's ancestral seat, but family loyalty counted for little on this island. He spotted his weak nephew cowering behind a group of men who actually seemed willing to protect him. He gripped his axes loosely as several of his own men and the Harlaws filed in behind him. "Well, it seems that his lovers are willing to defend him." He said with a laugh. "Crabs will feast on your flesh within he hour." He said before rushing forward, hooking one of the guards' shields, and ripped it away. Suddenly exposed, he was too slow to defend himself, and the second axe entered his chest.

Gorold Goodbrother stepped in after Harlaw, storms had kept him from landing at the same time as Harlaw and Harrag. He was laughing melancholic at the sight of Vickon's corpse. "We should have him impaled" He remarked coldly.

Too much effort, Gorold. Better a worthy foe than this unworthy pup...

Harren's eyes looking down at the deceased Lord Greyjoy before glancing over at the soon to be Lord of Pyke and Lord Paramount of the Iron Islands.

We still got to deal with your other niece and nephews, Vickon. What should be done about them?

All the while they talked, Harlaw warriors were dragging out the lazy guards that William had allowed to reside within this castle. Their presence was a stain, a reminder that needed to be swept away, of the late William's reign.

Gorold shrugged, perhaps a little disappointing it had been a while since he'd impaled someone.
"Perhaps so indeed" He said after some silence, in his mind he had already impaled the man.

Now Goodbrother men were assisting Harlaw warriors in the slaying off old Greyjoy guards, among them was Greydon Goodbrother, son to Gorold. He hacked and slashed through some of the already surrendered greyjoy guards with his two long swords. "You dare call yourself Ironborn" he roared at one that threw down his axe as Greydon neared.

Soon William was left cowering like a child before him. His coup had been executed perfectly, he thought. He grabbed William by the hair and hoisted him up with one well muscled arm. "I'll try not to botch this, but no promises." With one swift movement, William's head was removed from his shoulders, the body falling to the ground. Vickon tossed the head to one of his men. "Boil off the flesh and gild it in silver, I desire to sip from this cup of victory until the end of my days, and never let it be said my nephew William did not serve at least some purpose, no matter how poor."

"Goodbrother, Harlaw, come to me now. We must needs lay our plans afresh." He dropped to one knee and recovered the Droftwood Crown, placing it firmly on his own head.

Vickon had a reason to be Lord Paramount... and that reason was to make us Ironborn again.

Lord Harlaw says as he joins Vickon and Goodbrother. William had made them weak and feeble, now Lord Greyjoy could make them be what they were meant to be.

And for us to be Ironborn again is to do what we do best... reave.

"Some will say the old ways are dead." He began "I will prove them wrong. I will prove them all wrong. Together, my friends, we will build an unrivalled fleet and together we will wreak havoc upon the Greenlanders. They might have the larger armies but he are the masters of the seas." he was growing more manic by the second, his exes still stained with his nephew's blood and gristle. "Like the tentacles of a mighty kraken rivers deep enough for our ships to pass through stretch across all kingdoms and empty into every sea. This is our highway. We have only to remove those who would oppose us!"

What followed was a detailed analysis of his initial strategy, and a night of celebratory drinking...

The next morning and within several days, Vickon's other nephews and niece returned variably. At first Victarion stood at bay, not sure what his fate would be if he showed his face. But like a dragon resting on a pile of treasure, Vickon did not stir for several days. The drunken revelries at Pyke lasted several days. Sounds of the festivities made their way down to Lordsport, where Asha, Victarion and Rickon had gathered and conferred together, ready to flee at a moment's notice if their uncle was playing them for fools. He had sent assurances via messenger they had nothing to fear, but they also had no reason to trust him. Finally, seven days after sequestering himself within Pyke, he emerged at the head of a smartly dressed and outfitted group of reavers. Harlaw and Goodbrother were among him, and their banners fluttered behind his own Golden Kraken on a black field, the edges of the banner frayed and worn with wind and battle. Vickon smiled broadly as they set forth. His axes hung by his side and his new favorite trinket, a silver-gilded skull, served as his drinking cup.

They made a lazy path to Lordsport to meet with the other Greyjoys...

He entered the tavern set as the meeting point and orderd an ale for himself, drank it in one gulp, and then ordered his special cup refilled. He turned William's gilded face to face with that of his siblings. Vickon smiled, his gold tooth showing. He drank in their reactions. "In a way it's like he is still with us, but better. He never talks any more." Victarion laughed along with Vickon. He had been no great admirer of his older brother, and shared his Uncle's assessment of him. Asha and Rickon were less sure.

"You could have sent him to the wall, uncle." Rickon said passively. "There was no need for this" He gestured to the skull cup. Asha looked similarly uncomfortable by the spectacle.

Vickon slammed his fist down on the table. "That! That right there! Sent to the wall, bah! In service of a Realm that did nothing to spit on his face for years? This is the weakness I have returned to eradicate! Your father was at least a King worth respecting, he won his crown, paid the iron price. His son was not fit to stand in his shadow."

Asha rememebered her father fondly, he had been a strong man and just, not prone to unnecessary violence but a product of his people nonetheless. He chose a middle route between the old ways and this new order. William, her brother, had been unequal in the task. His time at Oldtown had seen to that. He had grown too comfortable with the ways of the greenlanders. "He should have been given to the Drowned god." She said at last.

Vickon looked quickly in her direction. "A better solution than your brother's." He said in reply. "But he would have made a poor servant. I did what needed to be done." He turned to Victarion. "You shall retain your rank and post. But if you fail me I will slay you and find another, do not disappoint me." he ordered "As for you, Asha, you may also serve me on your own ship. You will see war once again." He turned a vicious gaze to the youngest son, Rickon "You have much to learn, whelp. You're too much like your brother, and if I have to beat that out of you I will. If you refuse to learn, I will send you to the Drowned One, make no mistake of that." He addressed allthree of them now. "I will not pretend to love you, for in truth I do not. I have been gone long enough to lose the faintest affection for you. Prove useful and you will be rewarded. Prov to be anything less and well...I can spawn plenty of little Krakens all my own." he said gesturing to his lower half.

"Harlaw, Goodbrother, send them in here!" Vickon ordered. "Harlaw, I give to one of your sons, your choice which, Pebbleton. I expect his utter loyalty. If I order him to kill you, I expect him to try." Vickon laughed "Goodbrother! Have you a daughter, niece, or any womenfolk?"

Victarion considered his uncle's offer. He could try to make a fight out of this: many in the Iron Isles would be loyal to the Admiral of the Iron Fleet if made to chose between the Greyjoy they know and the Greyjoy who sailed home one day and usurped power. Then, Vickon had taken power so easily, and apparently had Harlaw and Goodbrother on his side from the start: this was no mere whimsical lunge at power. No, Vickon clearly planned this. Things were in motion, things Victarion had no sight of.

He held out his arm. "Lord Greyjoy." he said with a wicked smile.

"Nephew." Vickon grasped his nephew's arm with equal vigor. "Stick with me and your name will strike heart into babes in Westeros for years to come. Fail me and well, I'll have a pair of drinking cups." He said with a laugh, while taking a swig from William's head. "We will build thee a fleet unparalleled. Though whilst I'm among it, you'll defer."

Goodbrother came in joined by his son Greydon who had a grotesk scar, or at least by greenland measures on his face. Acquired on one of the many raids. Both
Goodbrother men were considerably tall and buffed, towering above nearly all in the realm. One couldnt miss them if they were in attendance, beyond that they we're a relative reserved kind of breed but their imposing stature impressed many souls. "I have a daughter." Gorold said plainly disregarding formalities. Greydon continued "Aye, Reya is our kin. Be aware though, she's a spirited one. She'll tear you a new if she's not satisfied." he said while laughing about the last sentence. Yet it was the truth that he spoke. Reya was dangerously unpredictable to men. She'd kill you if her mood wasn't too good on a particular day.

Vickon gave a laugh "Reya, then. I'll tame her and she shall become my wife. Our children shall be leaders of men, reavers, they will cause greenlanders to quake in fear, they shall be my heirs. I shall take Reya as my wife." Vickon replied with a smile on his face.
