Default Riverrun, Seat of House Tully

    House Tully

    House Tully

    HOUSE TULLY

House Tully of Riverrun rule over the Riverlands as Lords Paramount, having been appointed to rule over their compatriot Rivermen since the days of Aegon the Conqueror, when they led an uprising against the tyranny of House Hoare, the Ironborn Kings that ruled fro their terrible fortress of Harrenhal.

House Tully is in an interesting position - an old house, they have existed since the earliest days of the Riverlands, but never as royalty or particularly great lords. This puts them in the odd situation of being surrounded by houses with a better pedigree than themselves, much like the Tyrells of the Reach.

Regardless, the Tullys have ruled the Riverlands effectively over two centuries of Targaryen rule, and the region is exceptionally important for the production of grain. Sadly, it is also bordered on four sides, giving it a position of great weakness and making it a target for the ambitions of those around them.

    Lord Axel Tully

    Age: Born 200 AC(40)
    Status: Widower
    Children:
    Ser Jasper Tully(Born 220 AC)
Ser Beric Tully (Born 222 AC)

    Traits(6):
    +3 Battles
    +2 Logistician
    +1 Pillager

    Temperaments:

    Choleric
    - Bloodthirsty: This character is hotheaded and loves to jump into fights, lethal or otherwise. This is not something others find endearing off the battlefield, though. +1 Battles, -1 Charisma

    - Impulsive: This character acts before (sometimes, without) thinking. They might move and decide more quickly than others, but their recklessness can lead them to disaster as well. +5% movement speed, -1 to detection rolls.

    Sanguine
    - Confident: This character is very self-assured, brimming with confidence and difficult to shake even under pressure. However, taken to an extreme, they can show a suicidal disregard for their life and the lives of others, and fail to take...well, failure into account when planning. +1 battle rolls, +1 to rout rolls against this character.

    Regional Bonus

River Defenses: Riverrun has excellent natural defenses, as it is situated at the meeting point of two roaring rivers, the Tumblestone and the Red Fork. It even has a third man-made ditch covering the land around the walls between the two rivers, which can easily be filled with water from a sluice gate in times of siege. This effectively turns Riverrun into an island, making any attacks all but impossible. +3 to siege defense rolls.

Well Watered Lands: Fed by the many rivers coursing through it, the Riverlands are one of the most fertile regions of Westeros, matching the Reach in its bounty. Riverrun's vast stocks are usually stuffed to bursting by the bounty reaped by the Riverlords, providing an ample reserve to last through a siege. +6 months to siege holdout time.

Lord Tarrence Bracken arrives at Riverrun, as requested by his lord. His escort is headed by his younger brother Rolund. Tarrence looks forward to seeing Axell, as both are of a similar age and therefore had encountered each other several times as they grew up.

Lady Blackwood, whose castle lay relatively close to Riverrun, arrived at the Tully base by boat. She was dressed completely in black, what was complementary to her loose black hair. She wore some silver jewellery. She was escorted by her trusted household knights, among them some of her close kin. The bearers carried the signal of her house, displaying it with lots of pride. To much of her dismay she saw that the horse breeders also had found their way to the Riverrun Keep. The other party she spotted was house Frey. She was a little bit nervous. Both Lord Brack and Lord Frey were seasoned lords who saw many a winter. She realised she would be by far, the youngest in the crowd. She straightened her back, she would not let them think she feared him. She was of good and noble stock; cousin to royalty.
While waiting upon Lord Tully, she decided to socialise with the other lords to get to know them just a little bit better.
"Greetings, lord Frey." young lady Blackwood spoke to him, doubting if she would offer him her hand to kiss it. But promptly did so. "I hope your family fares well."

The various Lords and Ladies of the Riverlands were welcomed into the hall of Lord Axel Tully with lavish drink and refreshments, before the Lord of the Riverlands finally spake his piece.

He stood, dressed in workable clothes of fine wool, with sturdy boots - he felt little need to dress to impress those sworn to him. They sat in one of the mightiest castles in Westeros, what more impressing did they need?

Tully surveyed the Lords before him, noticing Lord Frey, and amused by the pretty Lady Blackwood sat as far from Lord Bracken as possible - some things never changed.

"My Lords! The Riverlands sits at a junction between kingdoms - many times over the centuries have we felt the wroth of our neighbours.

It is Riverlands grain that feeds the capital, along with Reach crops and fruit! The Good King Duncan has spot on me, and thus on you, with his insults. We have felt nothing but the scorn of our neighbours!

But no longer! It is time the Riverlands showed her true worth! We are not just peasants who farm their land and give up their possessions every time a raid sweeps into our territory! It is time the Riverlands felt the great wealth of the Seven Kingdoms!"

Tully paused, surveying the Lords before him somewhat aggressively.

"I have two intentions - firstly, we shall dig a canal from the Trident to the Narrow Sea, and then from the Trident to the Eastern Sea. We will force all trade headed from the capital to reroute from their track in the South, through the Riverlands, to get to King's Landing and White Harbour. Gold will flow along out rivers as it never has before!

But make no mistake, my friends, the other Lords of these Kingdoms will look on us with jealousy. They will see us as very juicy prey.

We will construct marches along our borders, castles and watchtowers to defend us and our new found wealth. These new castles will be yours, my Lords, to be ruled by your second and third sons as your vassals. This way, children with no previous prospect of title will find themselves with lands of their own, and our borders will be safe. "

Frey considered the plan thoughtfully, and ultimately found that it would work in his favor. "My Lord Tully, Perra has given me another son this year, and my own uncle Frankyln remains at the Twins, and he is useless to me. The whole Kingdom would be better served if he was given something to do. Perhaps my uncle, a man experienced in war and administration, might take up one of these posts you mention."

    Tully nodded, pleased.

"Your uncle will serve me as Lord Warden of the One Trident. I have need of such men in the days to come."

    Tully surveyed the other Rivermen.

"Are there any other volunteers or questions? Suggestions? Complaints?"

Lady Blackwood's mouth narrowed when Lord Tully began speaking and insulting her cousin, the King. She did not like it if anyone spoke against her kin in public, but she dared not to speak against him. Because she knew that somewhere they were right. Her royal cousins were foolish enough to go against three of the most powerful houses within the realm at the same time.

The reason why Lord Tully had indicated all these reforms might have displeased her, the reforms themselves, sounded good. So before Lord Bracken could say anything she quickly said: "These plans sound splendid, my lord Tully." she smiled charmingly; "House Blackwood would gladly help in manding the newfound castles." perhaps a future husband of hers could do the honours for her.

Lord Bracken noted with some detached amusement that Lord Tully had allowed a substantial distance between himself and the young Blackwood lady. Occasionally as Tully spoke, Tarrence glanced over at the Lady of Raventree Hall, and saw a flicker of dismay cross her face when Duncan's name was mentioned negatively. While normally quite passive, the lord of Stone Hedge could not let the opportunity pass by and offered his voice to the round of agreement, "Indeed my lord, the king should learn that the power of the crown has its limits - those which are set by the lords he rules" As the lord of Riverrun laid his plan out before them, Tarrence became rather excited, an emotion which was unfamiliar to him typically. "Two offers and a question my lord," he declared when Axell had finished speaking. "My question is where will canal will run?" It could probably have been guessed that he was hoping Stone Hedge might sit somewhere along this new canal.
"And my offers are the men of Stone Hedge to help dig this canal, if it runs through our lands to make sense." Confirming that he did indeed hope for this proximity. "And second, my brother Rolund as the holder of one of these new positions, which he can hold hopefully with a new bride."

Meanwhile, the aforementioned brother, handsome and, in fact much younger than Bracken, seemed to be unaware that his name had been brought into conversation. He was deep into his third cup of ale, and had been staring appreciatively at the attractive young Lady Blackwood, making no effort to be secretive of where his attentions currently lay, and apparently undaunted by the history between their families.

Melessa Blackwood wondered if Bracken also thought that Lord Tully only ruled by merit of his vassals, and indeed he did so he himself. Speaking in that manner about the king, would implicit it, but still she doubted that, that was his manner of thought. He obviously only wanted to gain as much as possible from any situation. He had no honour, she thought. No feeling of loyalty. Horsebreeder, at best is what he was. Her eye followed his towards his younger brother, she did not know him. She expected him to be much like his elder brother, old and stupid. Yet.. she was confused. There sat a handsome youth. Not much like his lordly brother. She caught his eye, was he staring at her? She looked away. But she didn't want to look intimidated by him, so she looked back. Was he staring at her this whole time? If this Rolund Bracken could serve as a lord of a new tower, surely her uncle ser Roger and cousins ser Robb and ser Raymund would be definitely be suited to do so.

"Lord Tully; do you already have chosen locations for these new towerhouses? Ser Roger Blackwood, my uncle can help you choose strategic points of interest, if you would need any help with it." Lord Bracken's brother could get a barren place somewhere far away.

Rolund watched as Lady Blackwood's gaze finally made its way across the room to him, allowing a smile to play across his lips as she quickly redirected her gaze, as he had expected. It slipped away when she looked back and met his stare once more. Not what he had expected. Nor was how compelling he found her hazel eyes. His jaw set. It became a force of will for him suddenly to keep his eyes on hers. Silently he thanked the Seven for the liquor he had consumed, without it, he would likely have looked away already. He was finally saved as she turned from him to address Lord Tully, something about her uncle, or cousin maybe, that he couldn't be bothered to hear, suddenly intrigued as he was by how her raven hair framed her face in profile, as it fell down, blending into the fabric of her black clothing.

Rolund swallowed, unsettled. He was well aware of how handsome he was, how desirable. He was the Wild Horse. He was supposed to have that affect on women, not that reaction to them. He continued to watch the lady now, but not with the same lecherous look, instead appearing stricken and somewhat thoughtful. It was not an expression that face often wore, had his brother seen it, he would likely have laughed heartily. Rolund couldn't be bothered to care about such things right now. He had good reason to think.

Tully was obviously pleased with such earnest loyalty.

"Roland Bracken shall be appointed the Guardian of the Ruby Ford, and Ser Roger Blackwood will attend upon me as my personal retainer."

With the meeting concluded, a feast was thrown for the assembled nobility.

Lady Blackwood was invited to Lord Tully's solar.

Her gaze directly went back to the handsome face - she could not deny it, altough she hated him for that, of Roland Bracken. That insolent lad was chosen above her uncle. The Brackens had won this wave of favor from her house. She thought it a way to punish her and her royal cousin. A Blackwood as personal retainer when Frey and Bracken gained real power and real castles. It was absurd and and insulting. She wanted to leave the feast immediately, out of anger but decided to stay to mingle with the other lords.

    --

Blackwood arrived at Tully's solar as invited. She wondered why he wanted to speak to her in private.

As she had lingered at the feast, mingling with other Riverlands nobles, Melessa would likely have noticed how Rolund kept nearing her but pulling himself away before any interaction occurred. Once it almost seemed that he would approach her at last, but he was suddenly swept away by his brother in an ecstatic rush about his the position he had secured.

As Tarrence rambled on about the impact of his own appointment as warden of the Ruby Fork, more excited than he had been for two years or so now, Rolund couldn't help thinking about how much it all sounded like responsibility. And about the Blackwood Lady. He supposed he should hate her. Blackwoods and Brackens hated each other. It was known. But of course, he couldn't actually say what he did feel about her. Tarrence's words washed over him, heard but not understood as Rolund pondered his own thoughts. He knew his brother likely wouldn't like them, as the lord of the house he had to have much more concern for age-old feud between their families. He expected it of himself. But that certainly wasn't Rolund's problem, his interests lay in a much different direction now, and he wasn't sure why some ancient rivalry should get in the way.

Tarrence could almost have described himself as euphoric. He had handled what could have been a tense situation with what he felt was an admirable aplomb. He had set himself up as well as he possibly could for whatever might come next. He had squeezed every drop of advantage and gain that he could from the situation. As other men and women milled about him he retreated, as he was wont to do, into the solace of his own thoughts. He knew his brother wouldn't like them, as a young dashing knight of the realm, he was far more concerned with ideals of honor and chivalry. He expected them of himself. But that was hardly Tarrence's problem, his concerns were in a much different direction just now, and he wasn't sure why some dusty outdated expectations should get in his way.

Melessa had noticed that young Bracken was did not stop his attentions towards her person when the meeting was over. During the feast he kept looking towards her, as she looked back to him - but only to check if he was still looking of course. Or so she would tell herself.

She talked with Lord Mallister - her other neighbour, about the harvest and he gave her some tricks about storing harvest for winter. Lord Mallister was old and kind, at least towards her. His kindness had no doubt root in his wish to marry one of his grandsons. Which she might well do. Ser Edric Mallister wasn't too bad. She noticed Rolund Bracken again. She decided to talk to him, wanting to know more about him. Perhaps she could bring him in discredit. So her uncle would be given his rightful title als Warden of the Red Fork, it was nonsense to give it to a Bracken.
She clasped her hands together and stood before Rolund Bracken. "I believe a congratulations is in order." she said a bit stiff.

Lord Tully poured a goblet of wine, before sipping his own. The Solar, in the highest if Riverrun's towers, 8verlooked the Trident and the surrounding lands for miles. Books sat on the shelves, the desk was littered with various papers and a roaring fire crackled in the hearth, while two crossed swords decorated the wall above the mantlepiece.

"I will be blunt, my lady, I would like to ask for your hand in marriage. It would, I think, do much for the cohesion of the Riverlands for our two great houses to be joined."

Having only recently escaped his brother's ramblings, Rolund was a bit surprised when Melessa Blackwood suddenly approached him out of the crowd. She offered something, that sounded vaguely like congratulations, which he didn't quite catch, as he suddenly found himself distracted by those hazel eyes he had noticed from across the room, now filling his field of vision. He thought he caught a slight scent of something sweet, and also devoted a little too much attention to that. However, he was not unused to speaking with beatiful women, even if this one did seem to have an unusual effect on him, and even as her presence twisted his mind in knots, Rolund acted almost out of instinct.

Not registering, or choosing to ignore her tone (a side effect of his distraction), the young Bracken offered a sweeping bow, looking dashing as ever as he rose and forced himself to meet her eyes once again. "Thank you my lady, you are too kind. It is an honor which I am sure I do not deserve. You're, ah..." damn it! Is it the uncle or the cousin? "...Kinsman, I am sure would have made a much finer governor I am sure, but an appointment to be a personal attendant to the Lord himself is certainly an honor in itself." He paused, somewhat awkwardly for a moment before adding rather unnecessarily, "To formally introduce myself, my lady, though it is clear that you at least know of me, I am Ser Rolund Bracken, younger brother and I suppose de facto heir to the childless lord of Stone Hedge, as well as apparently Warden of the Ruby Fork." He offered another slight bow. Of course she knew who he was, but she had him rather tongue-tied at the moment, and he had the furtive thought that as part of the introductory process she might offer her hand. He looked at her expectantly, if slightly dazed.
