The scarlet-haired and grey-eyed Reynes are an ancient house of First Man origin, who once ruled as kings from their subterranean seat at Castamere and grew rich from their silver mines just as the Lannisters did from their gold. Their petty-kingdom was absorbed into the Kingdom of the Rock when Loreon I Lannister married the daughter of the last Reyne king many thousands of years ago, and since then the Red Lions have served - at times faithfully, at times less so - beneath their Golden cousins as the second most powerful house in the Westerlands. During the Dance of the Dragons, the Lord Reyne of the time loyally followed his Lannister overlords onto the battlefield for Aegon II and died in the Battle by the Lakeshore for it; however, some decades and generations later, his descendants fought against the Targaryens and Lannisters during the First Blackfyre Rebellion and one in particular, Ser Robb Reyne, was one of the champions of Daemon Blackfyre, sufficiently skilled at arms and gallant in manners to have his name remembered in the pages of history as one of the finest knights of his day. If he still had Red Rain, the ancestral Valyrian longsword of his house until it was lost to the Drumms of Old Wyk millennia ago, he may have been as unstoppable as his chosen master.
Unfortunately for his house, Ser Robb died with the Black Dragon himself at Redgrass Field. The surviving Reynes, now led by his underage son Robert (who, with Robb's death, succeeded his grandfather as Lord of Castamere) turned their backs on the Blackfyres. Nearly 40 years after Redgrass Field, Robert himself fell fighting Blackfyre loyalists during the Storming of Starpike, perishing alongside King Maekar Targaryen and the oldest nephew of his liege-lord Tybolt Lannister.
That was seven years ago: since Starpike Robert's eldest son Roger, nicknamed the 'Red Lion', has ruled Castamere, supported by his haughty and ambitious sister Ellyn & wily, soft-spoken brother Reynard. A proud and ill-tempered man who murdered seven Peake prisoners in a rage over his father's death before being stopped by then-Prince Aegon, he nevertheless has the martial skill to back up his boasts and is reputed to be one of the most formidable fighters in the Westerlands, truly a worthy successor to his grandfather Robb. Moreover, Roger is married to Cerelle Lannister, the only child of Lord Tybolt of Casterly Rock and his legal heir for lack of any sons; meaning that, if the laws of succession are respected and she takes up lordship of Casterly Rock upon her father's death, her half-Reyne children will end up ruling Casterly Rock in due time without having any need to take up arms...considering the presence of more closely related male Lannisters in her uncle and cousins, however, this may well be a big 'if'. Naturally, Roger is therefore resolute in seeing to it that his wife succeeds to the position that is hers by birthright when the time comes, and in showing any wayward kin of hers that steps up to claim her rightful prize that the Reynes will not back down from realizing their house words: 'Second to None'.
