Thread: EB2 2.3 Let's Play

    Default EB2 2.3 Let's Play

Just to let you know, I am doing a let's play of the new, 2.3, version, using Ptolemaioi.

If you're interested, check out the link below to the first part, which serves as an introduction (hope posting a link is not in violation of any rules).

I shall also be reviving my 'Battle Recordings' section, when applicable.

    Best,

    Charlie

Great idea for a thread, and no, you're not breaking any rules.

Note on Battle Difficulty, there is no "no bonuses to anyone" option. CA in their great wisdom set it so that on Medium the player get small bonuses to morale and stamina, but on Hard the AI does. I recommend Medium (though z3n recommends Hard) because everything in the EDU has been balanced on that basis, and the AI gets bonuses to it's generals.

Great choice of faction. Carry on!

It began on seven hills - a historical house-ruled Romani AAR
    Heirs to Lysimachos - a semi-historical Epeiros-as-Pergamon AAR
Philetairos' Gift - a second attempt at an Epeiros-as-Pergamon AAR

Thank you for the info Quintus; I was unsure of the details. It's a tough choice, but I've got used to using H/H, so will continue with that. Hope to update soon!

The mask in the mosaic on that popup is probably some kind of funerary mask, ie the visage of an ancestor that might go in the family shrine.

A few comments on "choose a successor":

    - Because it uses the Family Tree window, you can right click on any of the prortraits, and it will bring up the screen detailing everythng about that particular Family Member (FM). So if you wanted to choose somebody based on their traits or personality, you have the ability to take a detailed look at all possible candidates.

    - If there are many choices (as there are with this faction) and you'd rather not spend a lot of time up-front deciding who would be the best successor choice, simply go for the oldest FM available. Especially in this case where the Faction Leader and Heir are much younger, the older successor is almost certain to die before them, which gives you another chance to pick a new successor. By which time either a) you'll have identified the guy you like best or b) an underage child in the FL branch of the family will have come of age and would now be eligible.

    - And of course there's no requirement to choose the heir immediately. As the instructions point out, you can close the Family Tree window without making a selection and can reopen it at any time and make your choice then.

@Quintus: Ah, most interesting. I was trying to think about what that could be for a while after!

@Kull: Thanks for the info, I always thought there was a way of looking at personality traits, before selecting, but never worked it out. Have taken note for the future. I will, probably, spend a little more time comparing next time.

@hlidskjalf, Commios and Krampus: Thanks for the support! I shall be doing the next episode later on today :-)

Something to note - Diospolis-Megale is a hotbed of unrest. It's the heartland of the Machimoi class of natives, and they're rather restive.

It and Side are part of the Troublesome Regions script, so expect unrest and risings.

Also note the presence of a Rebel stack in a province causes unrest.

Episode 5, Menelaos Lagou, eventually, forces the Iadaioi to fight:

Additional note for EB team: I noticed that, some, troops were holding torches, although the battle was fought in the daytime. It may be rationalised as an early morning battle, but was wondering if this could be a small bug. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I am using the altered file that changes the appearence of captains in the campaign. Anyways, just an observation.

Episode 6, Raising taxes (and grumbles), in order to respond to the Seleukid threat. Menelaos Lagou, fresh from victory against the Iadaioi, forces marches his men back to Ptolemais-Akko, in order to aid another family member, Tlepolemos Lykou, in fighting off the siege of Basileus Antiochos Soter:

What have the Romans ever done for us?

To be frank, though, I mostly play with Koinon Hellenon, Pergamon, Makedonia, or Epeiros. I've never played a Ptolemaioi campaign. Perhaps I should try it out! Thanks for sharing your videos, OP.

It's quite notable that you're not getting the best use from your cavalry - largely from charging too close to the target. Lancers like the Xystophoroi and your Hetairoi in particular can cause huge damage if you give them the space they need.

@Quintus: Thanks for the info. I did notice that and shall try to adapt tactics for the next battle. Did anyone see if the Seleukid king was killed in the battle? I have no idea!
