Pulcher laughed, he was clearly enjoyed the company. A chance at relaxation after a long and stressful period.
"Well that certainly is kind Cotta. The seat of a consul brings prestige but it comes at a heavy fee. Are you prepared to accept that for the betterment of the Republic?" he asked on a more serious tone.

Canus noticed the change in tone and did the same. "The Republic has been stifled for years already under Marius and Cinna. Then the possibility came that Sulla may take their places. With all of them dead, Carbo declared hostus out with his legions, there is no clear context on what side who is on." He rubbed his face. He was tired. Rome needed a babysitter while everyone had to figure out what they wanted for its future. "I'll do what I need to do, if I am Consul. I don't want Romans to die, I don't want our traditions and our laws to die..." He paused "I fear that choices between the two will have to be made in the not so distant future."

"I'm afraid so Canus." Pulcher said while he rubbed his hands together. "The nights turn colder" he remarked, he had probably meant it more as a remark to himself. He waived for one of his slaves. "Burn the fire's hotter." he ordered on a commanding tone, the tone he would normally have when addressing the senate. He turned back to Canus, reading his face. It came across that Canus truly had the best of intentions at hand to calm the raging storm that was known as civil war. "What will you do when Pius comes to Rome?" a question upon many answers could be replied. For Pulcher it was an important one. His sons were in Pius's army. Trying to make a name for himself. He once more waived for a slave and told him he wished for more wine. "Would you like some more as well Canus?" he asked.

"I am fine, thank you." he said as he waved his hand and nodded in thanks. "When Pius comes, and I think we both know that he will, Rome won't have anything to stand against him. We have words and laws, but that doesn't stop a sword." He sighed. Rome had been under Marius and Cinna for years. Then when Marius died and Sulla reemerged, everyone began to hold their breaths. Canus had been holding his breath since Sulla was elected years ago. "Men come and go, but Rome must always stand. Even if it isn't as the republic that our fathers and grandfathers served, Rome, and the idea of Rome, is above all."

Pulcher nodded in agreement, he yawned a little. Not out of boredom but out of sheer weariness. He had not been sleeping all to well lately and thus was simply tired.

With a smile and convincing tone Pulcher said "Rome is the only constant in our lives, we come and we go but there is always Rome. Rome shall endure my good Titus, I have no doubts."
He truly believed so. Rome had been there long before he was, and would long after still be there. Pulcher would arise from his seat. "I have enjoyed this conversation a great deal Titus, we should do this more often. If you fail to win yourself an office I will invite you to come to Gallia." he said. The hour had gone late and it was time to sleep the consul thought.

    --------------------------------------------------

As the voices of the many sslaves at work echo through the halls of the domus a man dressed in a soldiers equipment enters the Domus. The man looks tired and restless, to some he appears familiar but to most not. The man entering the Domus is Appius Claudius son of the consul. The consul himself was just stepping into the hall on his way to the privy. He looks at the man and realizes it's his son under all that filth.

He knows not what to expect, does he bring words of defeat? of victory? words that brought discomfort would be delivered in each scenario. The consul was certain of it, for who refuses a man that has an army whilst the Republic has none? "Speak son, what news bring thee from from the front lines?" He asked as he came closer and grabbed his son's shoulders.

Appius Claudius said "Father, we have engaged the forces of Norbanus and have won the day." he said with a shaking voice. Reliving the horrors he encountered on the field of battle. His father told a slave to prepare a warm bath at once while he led his son into the seating area of the domus. "Metellus Pius asks the following from the senate, he wishes to run for Consul in absentia. He made it clear that it was in the senate's best interest not to refuse this demand Father." the son said with terror on his face. Before Pulcher could reply his son would continue. "Pius lays siege to the remainder of Norbanus his legions that have taken refuge in Narbo. Whilst Norbanus has been taken a prisoner by Pius his legions do not look to surrender soon." Pulcher gave no respond, he was going over it in his mind. How would he tell the senate this? He wondered.

The slave came to indicate the bath was prepared. Pulcher snapped from his thoughtbubble and asked "Was that all Appius? How fare's Tiberius is he safe as well?" Appius Claudius nodded whilst shaking. "Tiberius is fine, he behaved commendable father... Pius has expressed desire to fight Carbo and return soon to Rome, in all earnest."

Pulcher smiled, it was good to know Tiberius had survived. He only hoped he was less of a mess than Appius."Rest well my son, I shall speak to you again tomorrow. Now you must bathe and rest."

"Thank you for having this day, Consul. It was a pleasure to gain your insight." Canus stood and gave a slight nod of the head before departing back to his Domus.

Sextus looked around for Pulcher's famous fountain.

"Pulcher, how was your time in Gaul?"

Pulcher rose to greet the man setting his empty cup aside.
    "Relaxing I may say Sextus."
In all truths Pulcher didn't do much but see to proper administrations and feast with the local Roman Patricians who owned housing there.
"How was life in Rome in my absence?" he inquired.

"Divided. There is a severe rift between my own family and the thugs employed allied with Messala in the Senate."

Iulus wondered if one of Pulcher's relatives had died where he was standing.

"With my father gone from the city, my family finds itself in dire need of allies."

Pulcher rubbed his chin whilst he looked at the spot Sextus stood, a slave had once died there rather sudden. Blood had dripped from his ears and nose before he collapesed there. It was a annoying event, spoiling Pulcher's father's evening.

"Thugs you say?" Pulcher asked, he was not well informed of recent events,

"I hope your father is well, I have not heard news of my sons lately." Pulcher wasn't worried, he just wondered if they did proud the family name.
