Default October 2017 Las Vegas Shooting - 50 Dead

Las Vegas: 50 people killed in Mandalay Bay shooting
At least fifty people have been killed and at least 200 injured in a mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert.

A gunman, named as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel toward an open-air music festival.

Police said a suspect identified as a local resident, who was not named, had been shot and killed by officers.

They said they were looking for a companion travelling with the suspect as a "person of interest".

Sheriff Joe Lombardo said police believed the shooting was a "lone wolf" style attack, but confirmed they were trying to locate an Asian female named as Marilou Danely.

Death toll is at 50 and rising with 200 injured. It's reported that this is the doing of just one man using what seems to be an automatic weapon. As details arise we'll know how he got those weapons and what his motives were. It is bound to reignite the debate over guns and extremism in USA. Extremism of which kind? Las Vegas is one of the most relaxed states when it comes to gun laws. Another angle is how Trump will respond. Will he respond with pointing out how both sides have nice people? This gunman can very well be one of those he mentioned when talking about Charlottesville.

There are many schοcking videos like that. It seems the gunman took advantage of the confusion to reload again and again against the crowd. There is even one video with someone hearing gunshots and saying its only fireworks. I am quite sure it was pre-planned

This is sickening, so many dead and injured. My thoughts and prayers go out to their loved ones.

The US has a problem, which I think only the strict control of ammunition can resolve. Actual gun control is unlikely even after this shocking incident. The shooter fired using an automatic from a position on the 32nd floor of a nearby building. That wasn't an ordinary easily acquired weapon surely?

    - If the people so violently shot down in Las Vegas had no guns, at least they would have had a fighting chance.
    - Isn’t it interesting that the tragedy in Las Vegas took place in one of the easiest gun control countries in the world?
    - Remember, when guns are permitted, anybody will have guns!

(see how much fun it is to read that, right ?)

Even armed with a handgun, you aren't going to take down a shooter armed with an automatic positioned at such a height.

@caratacus All of these are Trump tweets. I changed very few words.
As far as I know, there is very few cases of sniping nest shootings in gun controls countries. Those things happens in USA, if not only there. They doesn't need the local Allah Wakbar club for that.

What will happen next week : police will find out it's either a left psycho or a right psycho or point whatever particularity that psycho have, like eating cereals with no milk.
Then people will mourn & fight around that particularity with "there I told you, you're wrong no you no you no you no you no you" ad nauseam for two monthes until next psycho in the line buy anything made for war that throws high velocity bullets or explosives and go pay a visit in a school, a retirement home or anywhere there is defenseless people and teach USA a lesson of liberty yet again, said lesson that USA never learns.

America just want to know "yeah, the guy was a ___________" so they can reply "ok, then."
Ok then what ? Then nothing, just "ok, then.".

How can we react to that as foreigners : each 2 monthes you have the same story coming from the same country again and again and again. Everybody in the world points what's wrong each time and America replies "ok, then".

Well, too bad, 50 people died : ok then. Sorry. Next.
How can't we react with extreme cynism now, tired of being sad for USA each 2 monthes ?

Notice that "too bad, 50 people died : ok then. Sorry. Next." is also what reply makes US gov since I don't even know when.

Well, he certainly isn't going to instigate gun control after this.

The thing that got me when watching the video footage of the shooting is the lack of preparation by the performers for such an event. There was a burst of fire and the singer disregards it, which I guess is understandable because it could have been fireworks. But when it stops, several seconds before the second burst of fire the singer realises something is going on. But instead of warning everybody, he drops the mic and runs, leaving much of the audience just standing wondering what has happened and presenting a bigger target.I recall this also happening at the Paris Bataclan. That lack of warning by the performer, probably cost many people their lives.

It should be standard practice that concerts have security staff, with direct communication with the performer in the event of a shooting. A clear early warning by them, would provide seconds for people to find cover or run.

Ammunition is plenty in the world. If you can work your way around to buy an automatic weapon, buying the ammunition would be even easier.

No point in speculating on political motives, more information will come out. I find it unlikely that a white supremacist would target a country music concert, considerinly the overwhelming majority of county music fans are white.

    Also missing:

One woman, who was at the Route 91 music event, claimed an unidentified woman had told other concert-goers they were “all going to die” after pushing her way to the front of the venue.

The witness, 21, told local news: “She had been messing with a lady in front of her and telling her she was going to die, that we were all going to die.“They escorted her out to make her stop messing around with all the other people, but none of us knew it was going to be serious.”

Companion/person of interest somehow related to the shooter who is currently in police custody after a manhunt:

You've got three disaster areas and now the worst mass shooting.

My bet would be that Trump will tone down his Twittering and keep his head down.

As for gun control, the best that will happen that the push for loosening them will be stopped in it's tracks until after the next election cycle on the Federal level and in the Red states, while the Blue ones crack down.

Nice jump to conclusions there Setekh. We know nothing about the guy, but he's instantly a right wing Trump supporter?
Remind me, please, which side of the political spectrum was the guy who fired at Republicans playing baseball? Or how about the guy who fired at and killed police officers? Are they part of the nice people on the left who are so much better than the evil right?

Nothing I said there suggests that I jumped to a conclusion and called the guy a right wing Trump supporter. It is you, in fact, whose jumping to conclusions. It is, also however, telling that your go to response is to turn it into a pissing contest. Pathetic.

"The gunman can very well be one of those he mentioned after charlottesville"
You might not outright say it, but the implications are obvious, as are your attempts to deny them.

Can he not be? Yes or No? Nothing in there suggest that it was instantly a right wing Trump supporter. Funny how we don't hear such pathetic objections when the perpetrator is claimed to be a Muslim the second the attack happens and we have absolutely no knowledge of the attacker.

Why did you bring up specifically that option and not mentioned any others? Maybe every time there's an explosion somewhere or a stabbing I should write "he might be Muslim", but it's okay because I'm just saying "might", right? Clearly not making any implications or anything.

    My take on the incident:

I don't believe that gun laws will solve the problem in the US because it has particular dimensions there.
    Once more this becomes relevant:
Richard Slotkin on Guns and Violence

People in the US feel entitled to the ownership of killing capabilities.
No law can change the sense of that entitlement.

I predict that any gun control laws will simply be disregarded in the exact same way that narcotics laws are so extensively disregarded.
The US is the nation with the most atrocious rate of incarcerated-to-free residents in the world and the majority of prisoners are serving mandatory minimums for non violent soft drug possession.

When the people feel entitled to own and use something, then law only serves to oppress.
The problem, as professor Slotkin asserts, is the culture of guns and violence in the US and the connection of that culture with the mythology of the American ethnogenesis.
Consequently, gun ownership is also connected with the sense of Americanitas, the sense of American identity, at least in the more sparsely populated expanses of that country.
Current legislation is the result of that culture, not the cause of it.

The current culture is one of demagoguery. It's not based on any logical principle. It's based on the idiocy of yelling out "dey tuk rr guns!" You can value gun ownership while being responsible and sensible about it. Many gun control measures do not try to take away guns like drug laws. They try to regulate them and create checks and balances to create nets for potentially harmful individuals. This culture is created and used by the politicians to create dumb masses they can rally together.
