Yea I done my research and im incline to agree with you not that I disagreed but... Ya know just wish there was some loophole or some civ that was there... but unfortunately there wasnt. All those minor tribes in spain and gaul were absorbed and defeated without my resistance. I read up on the alans, they were absorbed by the visigoths in southern hispania.
In my 463 campaign im playing the wroman empire, can't remember what year, but iv retaken spain and most of gaul... battling the remnants of the visigoths and the franks in northern gaul and belgium. So far the ostrogoths have not invaded northern italia... despite my poorly defended border forts I have yet to be attacked... but im not complaining. I fought the vandals for sicily early on the campaign and havnt dealt with them since.
I read up on my history on late rome, and its just in my opinion that the ostrogoths never made much of an impact untill have 476 when they expanded at the behest of leo and his successors.
RIO what are your thoughts on the Heruli, thurigian, and burgundian tribes... Possible factions in western and central europe. I may be wrong but I thought there wasn't a burgundian tribe in the campaign, instead its a lombard tribe, actually I might be wrong there might be one.
I've made the campaign harder in 5.5 so It should be a challenge to restore the Western Empire in both campaigns.
There is a Burgundian Faction in the game. They have are in a difficult situation with the Franks, Roman rebels, and Visigoths expanding. They sometimes leave the game quickly. The Alans or Thuringians might be the best addition of them all. I think the Thuringians I think are a good East German faction...something to ponder about.

Ciao Rio,
installed modswitch 5.5 and played some turns with my Seax Men. I really like the new interface... it's more... DARK
! The new starting locations for Saxons, even giving up to the land bridge on the continent from Vicus Saxones, leave free to focus on Britain conquest and then land on continent for its conquest: good, really good
!
Few little point... I found that in the first choice screen (the one with single player, options, etc...) there is still written RIO IV(jocking
!).
Therefore in the faction choice screen for the Bulgars the symbol is the one with dragon head on yellow field, but when Bulgars started the symbol change to a one with a cross on blue field. Finally as you can see by the image there is a dark brown line on tactical map
As said I started to play Saxons, changing some rules.
* I will employ only units that based on buildings built can be hired, enlisted, trained and retrained; less advantages but I think more realistic...
* I will not have a blitz campaign, but high care and focus on economy.
* every battle will be fought, not automatically resolved. Only town with 1/2 units garrison the siege will be automatically resolved
* every faction enemy army and town siege will be fought not bribed
* first objective will be to conquer all Britain Island (maybe Ireland too...) and then I will land on continent
* AAR will be divided in battles report and in tactical map report (with images of course...)
Maybe are not so particular rules, but I will exactly follow them... any comments or suggestions...?

Hi margio, Interesting house rules...London is a must but I think(I tried to make)the Romano Brits didg in and rally...they might surprise you. The Angli/Saxon/Jutes were more like mercenaries trying to carve out a homeland so I cut their tie with Jutland(tribus saxones)
Good eye with the brown line..he he never saw it![]()
The Bulgar flag will eventually be changed...good eyes again![]()

Ciao Rio,
It is 474AD Saxon Campaign, and I captured all towns in south Britain, and now I am going to north to finish the job...
I focused on town's and economy growth mainly, helped by using one army only (6 levy spearmen, 4 keels, 3 hunters, 4 sea raiders), resting in captured towns till minimum 3 units enlisted in, keeping sieges till last turn and fighting outside walls. By the way I am really thinking to restart, changing setup (now playing easy econ, hard/medium, large units) because I have the feeling that something missing... few RB units around (just members) and even what I think the most important towns as Caerwent for Stonhenge, Viroconium as capital, Londinium as richest land are defended by few units. Others towns like Icenorum, Isca and others (sorry but I didn't learn all new names yet) have 10/12 units inside even if not full of men.
Strange is that the rebel town (the one west of Angli) have 20 units plus 1 general inside :hmmm:...
Maybe I was not in a good mood to play on last days, but I think that with VH/H setup I will found what missed... and with hard econ... maybe
...
PS. the Aestii rebellion is really funny, unexpected and a hard new challenge... I was really... surprised when happened
!!!

very welcome.....I most probably will put in the chariot in one of the Gael provinces in the next upgrade
Hi Margio,
That area has been difficult to balance(probably will need further attention) The 432AD campaign is harder than the 463AD one just to point out. If anything I want the AI Saxons to make there way through Britain but with resistance. From the humane Saxon player on H/H the hope is for a major challenge or a even a 50% risk of being defeated. Also upkeep problems should come into play(hoping) I would recommend campaign and battles at the least played on Hard level
Also don't use the 5.0 harder econ over the 5.5(I should have clarified this in the read me) The 5.5 uses a different export_descr_unit file than the 5.0. thus, the game will not work.
I've been further re balancing the Saxon-Britain advent in for both campaigns. I'm not satisfied at how they (the Saxons) are currently balanced in the mod. Its amazing how much time this takes to do but I think I really tightened it up nice...a real challenge on h/h to play both the Romano British and the Angli-Saxons-Jutes. I should have a a very mini patch for the mod switcher and rar dls in a day or so..
Ciao Rio,
Following suggestions I started Saxon Campaign on 432AD (H/H settings) playing 10 years (40 turns) as I have done with 463AD to compare the results. I must say that I prefer the starting locations on 432AD, because it gives more feeling of little land given for help against Picts raid to RB. It's 442AD, I have captured Icenorum, Londinium, Caer Cynwyddion, Caer Calemion, Ceintii, Caer Baddon (in this order) and I am close to capture Isca. I employed one army only (6 levy spearmen, 3 hunters, 4 sea raiders), focused quite only on economy buildings, once captured the army stays in the town till 3/4 units enlist, siege resolved at 1 turn left. By economy I have now 311285 denarii and trades with everybody except RB.
Good results for Saxons 10 years campaign...? I don't know but the feeling is that RB are just waiting their end without reactions or very little actions. I will wait for your patch, but I think that it will be not savegame compatible and not knowing when released (I am not pressing for sure...), I will start a WRE 432AD campaign or a RB 432AD campaign, this last to see the other side of the hill and maybe more helpful, even if I think that you already find the solution
![]()
To play a Barbarian and Roman campaign same time (one day after) it was an idea that I found funny and not so difficult to do, because curious to see what happens play on same regions and same battles on the two opposite side... maybe a bad idea...

Yes, Its so frustrating to see the AI play the RB as if the Saxons are just going to pack up their things and go..awayBut anyway with the patch I've forced battles at the very start. On h/h The RB will be seriously challenged to hold London and the Saxons will be challenged to take London. And the victor is usually very weakened(sort of a pyrrhic victory)
Thanks Margio for bearing through this with me![]()
Ciao Rio,
no problem to bear through this with you... playing RIO Dark Ages it's my little contribution
... Playing I enjoy your mod and I amuse myself
... if meanwhile I can be helpful it's a kind of involvment and partecipation... little, but I am really glad to do this
.
I also thought to change strategy: after capture three/four towns (as per the order written above) RB starts every two turns to ask ceasefire; maybe making peace and pointing to the continent, capturing first the rebel town close to Britain shores, can leave time to RB to grow and become more challenging :hmmm:...
Anyway before I will wait for the patch, maybe starting 432AD WRE campaign, which means a completely different strategy at starts: no town to capture to grow quickly, but territories to defend...

Upon leaving the game, I received an error message which stated that there was a problem in Line 12 of rio/data/world/maps/base/descr_regions.txt. The mod couldn't find a resource called "pictie", which I assume is actually "pictii".
I really like your mod, by the way. I'm desperately playing the WRE, and it's gut-wrenching to see an army come marching out of the darkness, and you've only started building a force in the area. It really gives a sense of how hard the time was for the western Empire.

Hi Oldgamer. It really is a sense of pride to hear when someone likes what you have created. I always feel a warm necessity to share it with Ramon and Ice Torque...or anyone who was(is)involved in making the mod...Thanks
The error message has to do with the hidden resource, pictie
It is for recruitment of the region specific unit, marchan tho and noble clansmen Celt for the Picis and Romano British. I'm not sure why that message is appearing in your game but when you get a chance check to make sure that the Picts' can only recruit them in most of their starting territories. The RB should be only able to in some of their northern starting cities.
I really wanted to portray the feeling of desperation especially in the 463AD campaign. A great challenge for the player to revive a broken, beaten, and lifeless Empire to its once proud past.
Just to note, I should have a tiny patch to rebalance the Angli/Jutes/Saxons out today.
It will be for both the 5.5 mod switcher and rar
I can't download the files from the WWW.filefront.com, try it many times, but it's wrong.
So, may you find another web to upload the MODs?
I suggest on the http://moddb.com/ it's great!
I can also post it hear but I'll definitely set up another link.

Hey Rio, I'm glad to see you're still developing your mod, it's one of the best out there and you continue to come up with great ideas. I'll download the latest version and give it a spin, any factions in particular that you're curious to have someone play?
Hey Cherryfunk, Always a pleasure to see you over here.I'm so close to uploading a tiny patch that rebalances the Saxons and Romano British. the Britain Island factions. Also just slightly tweaked the balancing of most of the other factions as well. After I upload it(hoping today) the Saxons should really be a blast to play. I would say Try the 432AD or 463AD Saxons first. A close second would be the 463AD WRE I think should be quite the challenge to play and fun...Thanks for the kind words
Excellent, I'll give the Saxons a try, they're a great faction with all sorts of potential.
One thing I was wondering, do you still have the entire eastern half of the map controlled by the Huns, or did you split them into 2 factions like you were thinking of? Also, I think the regions north of the steppes (the forests of upper Russia) should be free/slave/rebel - whatever you want to call it. I don't think the Huns bothered to conquer these areas.
