Thread: MATERIAL-data, how do they work?

Default MATERIAL-data, how do they work?

    Hi there,

I recently tried to edit a MATERIAL-data file:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    weighted4_emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_helm_no_alpha.xml.material
to change the specular texture of a specific rigid model, namely:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_02.rigid_model_v2
So I opened the said material-data file with a text editor, changed it's "name":
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
then changed the specular texture path to that of the new texture (.dds) file:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
and saved the material-data file under the "name" I previously gave to it, i.e.:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    weighted4_tcw_emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_helm_no_alpha.xml

However, after editing the corresponding WSMODEL-data file:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_02.wsmodel
so that it selects the new material-data file instead of the old one, and after importing all the necessary files into the mod, i.e.:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    tcw_emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_02.rigid_model_v2
    tcw_emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_02.wsmodel
    weighted4_tcw_emp_reiksguard_zintler_head_helm_no_alpha.xml.material
    tcw_reiksguard_zintler_helmet_01_specular.dds
the specular texture of my rigid model seems to be missing in game.

My guess is that I am doing something wrong with the MATERIAL-data file, as I am not yet familiar with this type of file... But maybe some of you know more about that and can help me out? That would be really nice.

    Cheers!

Now I'm confused... Yesterday I deleted the modified MATERIAL-data file from my mod (and edited the WSMODEL-data so that it looks back at the vanilla MATERIAL-data). When I ran the game with the mod, the rigid model seemed to use the vanilla specular texture - just as it should. So I added back an unmodified MATERIAL-data file (exactly the same as in vanilla, didn't even change it's name) to the mod to look if I get the same result and... surprise, the specular texture was missing in-game again!

It seems to me that for some reason the game doesn't recognize external MATERIAL-data file, even those that are totally identical to the vanilla files. Any idea of what just happened there?

It seems like someone on Steam Workshop managed to get the results I wanted (link). I tried to do the same, but with my own custom textures; however it still doesn't work.

Here is the .pack file of my mod.
