    CATW 1.2

This opus is classical age: total war as it should have been. There is a more fitting faction setting for 300 BC, starting with new factions that are crucial for this campaign depicting the early Roman army and the last Samnite War. In 298 it was nearing its dramatic conclusion, with Gellius Egnatius, raising a coalition of all Samnites tribes and allied Italics south, and Etruscans and Senones and Cenomani attacking from the north. It was also a last-ditch effort of the Etruscans to expel the Romans, their long-gone royal colony since 700 BC. Will you, Rome, survive this last threat ?

In 300 BC, the Samnites and their allies the Etruscans, and later Senone transalpine gauls and Umbrians, with their allies the Greek cities from Magna Graecia are all hostile towards Rome's rising star and agressive diplomacy. The time was ripe for a third Samnite war, the last and most fearsome of them all.

Behind this, Epirus, to the east, can be a threat if allied with the Samnito-Etruscans and "Magna Grecia", and the turbulent Illyrian tribes are going to be united by an ambitious Dardanian king, Cleitus (335-295 BC). Like the previous version of catw 1.1, Greek Cities are now the Bosporan Kingdom in the black sea (crimea), with interesting greek-scythian features, since "Greece" is now reduced to independent Sparta. The Arverni, Bellovaci (Belgians) and Senones are also present, but the great novelty is Massalia, depicted for the first time, replacing pontus that should not exist in 300 BC. Massalia presents interesting classical Greek features, with a large pool of Gallic auxiliaries, and two cities, including Emporion on the north-east Iberian coast and a powerful fleet. A rival for Carthage. Also, the Getae are move further east, to Tomi (Scythia Parva) on the black sea coast. Its powerful Thracian and Macedonian neighbours makes it a very challenging faction to play.

Carthage, at that time was relatively less well established in the Mediterranean, in particular in Spain, with just one settlement roughly corresponding to the ancient Tartessian culture area. However they are in force in Sicily, facing an independent but powerful Syracuse. To the eastern Mediterranean, the Diadochi are still at war. These are the 1st generation, the famous companions of Alexander the Great: Seleucos and Ptolemy I Soter, Cassander in Macedon, and Lysimachus's empire (Thrace) which now encompass much of the coastal, northern and western asia minor, including Phrygia, caria, pontus, Pergamum... Four great eastern empires ready to collide, once again, to decide who will rule the world. The battle of Ipsus (302 BC) recently reshuffled positions of these charismatic leaders. The steppes are inhabited by the mighty Sarmatians, which left the Scythians playable as auxiliaries by Bosporos.

    Why 1.2 ?

Because this version of catw is based on catw 1.1, with the same, famous unit rosters, but with the addition of catw 2.0 animations, and the gradual implementation of 2.0 features (AI, formations, environment...).

Latest version September 2018: CATW 1.2.4

    About the new factions

    Samnium
    Gellius Egnatus (+ 295 BC)

He was the leader of the Varriani tribe of the Samnites during the Third Samnite War, which broke out in 298 BC. By the end of the second campaign the Samnites appeared completely defeated, however in the following year Gellius Egnatius marched into Etruria, and roused the Etruscans to a close co-operation against Rome. This had the effect of withdrawing Roman troops from Samnium for a period of time; but the forces of the confederates were defeated by the combined armies of consuls Lucius Volumnius Flamma Violens and Appius Claudius Caecus.

In the fourth campaign in 295 BC Egnatius induced the Gauls and the Umbrians to join the confederacy; but due to the withdrawal of the Etruscans and the Umbrians, the Gauls and the Samnites fell back beyond the Apennines, and were met by the Romans near the town of Sentinum. A decisive battle, marked by the heroic devotion of P. Decius Mus, ensured that the Samnites were defeated and their leader Egnatius was slain.

    Massalia

Massalia, now Marseille, Southern France, was never featured in catw before, now it's time. The city was funded by the Phoceans in circa 600 BC, and became like Carthage one of the most important city-state and port in the Western Mediterranean. The colonia started in a region ingabited by a Gallic tribe called the Ligurians, and the site was itself part of the Segobrigae tribe. The city traded with the phoenicians (and later Cathaginians), Etruscans, Iberians, and from 300 BC, with the Romans with which it was allied soon, and stayed faithful until the first Empire.

Religious habits included the veneration of cults from Asia Minor, as the Phoceans were settled near Smyrna. According to Latin author Justinius, the Massilians has been compelled because of the poverty of the surrounding soils to concentrate on the sea through trade, fishing and also piracy. Like Carthage, Massalia is the basis for a commercial empire in the Souther coast of Gaul, with fundation of Agathe Tychè (Agde), Olbia (Hyères), Antipolis (Antibes) Nikaïa (Nice) and later Alalia (Aléria) in Corisca, Elea (Salerno), or Emporion (Empúries) in Iberia.

On a military standpoint, Massalia is rich and can afford to raise local mercenaries among the Ligurians and surrounding gallic tribes, sardinian archers, corsican mountaineers, balearic slingers, iberian and of course Greek mercenaries from all over the Mediterranean. The core was the Greek hoplitic phalanx, perhaps influenced by the locals (chainmail) with peltasts and little cavalry as the surrounding area was mountainous. Massalian navy was quite powerful, relying on trieres and penteres as much as the Hellenitic city-states of the time. Massilian hoplites, machairaphoroi, militia hoplites, fast hoplites, armoured hoplites, iphikrates hoplites, thuerophoroi, epibatai.

    Bosporan Kingdom

The Kingdom of Bosporus was an ensemble of greek city states in the Crimean peninsula. Since the Scythians are not depicted as a faction, but the sarmatians are, the "last scythians" can be played with this faction. The Kingdom of Bosporus was established on the basis of greek trading posts settled from the sixth century bC along the western coasts of the Black Sea, and particularly the Crimean peninsula. Between Thrace and Scythia, the Kingdom was also the first "Hellenistic" state because of its far away Greek population and native mix. The strength of the Kingdom lies in its commercial prosperity: In effect, Bosporos built his first fortune with the control of trade between east and west, north and south of the Black Sea, Chernonesos becoming the local equivalent Carthage and Syracuse. Its trade relations with Persia were good, and after the chaos resulting from the disintegration of the empire, some floating is felt in the local ruling family, the Spartocids Thracians established since 438 BC, although but maintained their authority until 110 BC. jc. De facto they went later into the orbit of Pontus, then the Romans.

The Kingdom made its fortune through the export of grains (fertile soil and sunny in the region gave extensive lands to wheat), dried fish and slavery. These were Thracians or from the vast steppes of Scythia and further east still. The Scythians were also deemed excellent "head hunters". What is the relationship between the Scythian nobility and artisans who gave probably the finest jewelry and a testimony of Scythian culture. These were found in many Kurgans, tombs of nobles in the current Ukraine, currently at the Museum of hemitage in Moscow and private collections. These include the famous comb of Solokha, who besides being a work of art of rare quality, testified much better than anything else of the equipment of Scythian warriors at that time.

The Kingdom of Bosphorus contributed heavily to settle nomadic Scythians. The latter, former Iranian people, reigned supreme on the western steppe and beyond the Aral Sea. Aside kurgan the left few signs on deer stones concentrated in the coastal region. This did not get without fighting with the warlike tribes from the north-east, devouring valuable resources and wealth of these countries. Satyrus, became a tyrant, then king, and had to battle against the Thateans, with cavalry numerically matching infantry. In 300 bC, the military power of the kingdom was based on the strength of these Scythian warriors and a hard core of Greek infantry supported by Thracian mercenaries. A combination that could be decisive on many battlefields if the Spartocids Kings ever develop the right ambition.

    CAMPAIGNS in development

    CATW 1.3 SAMNITI BELLO
The two other independent mods in development sice two years (catw06 and catw07), long-term has been recently scheduled to be transformed into regional campaigns. One set in 230 BC (the Illyrian wars) and the other in 9 AD (Arminius lead of the Germanic tribes, and the battle of the teutoburg Forest). CATW 1.3 Illyrico Bello
    > 230 BC - The Illyrian Wars. At that stage, the illyrian tribes has been unified as a powerful confederation by king Agron, and his wife Teuta took power when he died. The kingdom of the Ardiaei also comprises to the north, the Dardanians, and starts with numerous fleets in the Adriatic. New factions: Epirus, Saba, Maurya, Illyrians.

    > 9 AD, Arminius' revolt. That's a famous episode that you all knows about. Arminius was a Cheruschi Nobleman, taken in hostage to receive a Roman education, that entered in the Roman Army service as a auxiliary cavalryman. Back in Germany, he is reconnected with his family and the harsh reality of the brutal management of local governor Varrus. Once his mind has been set up, he's playing a double game, eventually ending as Varrus trusted confident while at the same time he was about to lead two Roman legions in a massive trap, and end the Roman progression beyond the Rhine for centuries to come. All factions would not be playable at first.

Status: Development stopped, ported under cat05 as regional campaigns. Expect these on catw 2.1 now mid-2019.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [SIZE=3]CATW 1.5 MITHRIDATIC WARS

Development also stopped because of bugs without solutions; Now scheduled to be ported as a regional campaign on catw2.1. as well as another campaign in 280 BC (catw04) and another in 264 BC (catw01).
    > The Mithridatic wars settings (88-64 BC).
Mithridates was probably the biggest Romans hater since Hannibal, and when conquering back Asia Minor he gave orders for a Roman genocide, murdering perhaps tens of thousands in a single day. The Romans in 88 BC are definitely consolidating an Empire in all but name (and ruler), still stretching an ageing republic to the limit. But these are definitely very troubled times, as Social War ends with the defeat of the Italian allies by the Romans and Sulla became master of Rome, marching into the city with his army. A sacrilege never committed before. The latter would soon take his first command in the East, against a menacing Mithridates; The first Roman Civil War starts with a democratic uprising led by Gaius Marius (father of the famous reforms). At the same time, from the balkans a huge army composed of the Dardani, Scordisci, and the Maedi attack the Roman province of Macedonia. To give the scope and ferocity of the first Mithridatic war, King Mithridates VI of Pontus invaded Greece, defeating the Roman forces four times in succession, conquering Bithynia, Phrygia, Mysia, Lycia, Pamphylia, Ionia and Cappadocia, all but dismantling the Roman province of Asia, rounding up and murdering Latins everywhere in a single day. How Rome will react ? How will you manage this new threat in Asia ?

This timefeame is also interesting for other factions. Indeed Pontus reached its peak back then, deserviing the title of "empire" but so do Armenia as well, under legendary ruler Tigranes. Parthia has just eat what's left of the Seleucids which are reduced to a small kingdom in Syria strife with internal turmoil and open to invasions. The only Diadochi state left is Prolemaic Egypt, but for how long? Dacia soon would be united under King Burebista and also reach a new strenght.

    Hi Leon,
    Well, it's going well.
I restarted the mod from scratch, on Mundus Magnus, using as many elements from catw 1.1 and catw 2.0 as possible
And the main objective is reached. Whereas neither catw 1.1 or catw 2.0 works on STEAM for me, and on any .exe so far.
I think the main additions here are the new factions (Massalia and the Samnites) that were not seen in the first opus, and this is more historically accurate
The foreign nations are huge and difficult to beat since it's based on desr_strat HARDLINE

And cherry on the cake there are now all original historical battles (in addition to the 100 that you can load from custom battles menu), revised and integrated.

That's catw 1.2.0, i'm already working on a 1.2.1 patch for this summer.
Hope to deposit this mod on moddb and steam as well

    Hi Thg170,
I downloaded the mod yesterday, installed it, and launched several campaigns and custom battles without incident. So it should not be a corrupted file problem.
    Now let's check these points:
Do your main folder is called "catw" or "catw05" ?
Is there a chance your real path is catw05/catw05/ ?
Do you start with STEAM and "-nm -show_err -mod:catw05 -noalexander" in properties or with the shortcut ?

CATW 1.2.2 was released this WE
It adds new units, new map overhauls, and most importantly new strat cities, ports, and "colonies" that replaces the observation towers.
As well as many more modifications
Both can be downloaded from catw's page, one compressed with 7z, the other with zip.
These are full versions, no needs for the 1.2.1 patch.

In option, there are also about 180 new HD loading screens.

It usually means an incorrect install iirc, try going to your directory/Alexander/data > copy chat_filter.san and paste into your CATW 1.2 folder

Aye it is odd, Alexander/data > 2 files down from "world" afaik it should be here in every copy, seems it could be an incorrect install of your base game, have you tried a complete reinstall? I seen a query for this issue a while back, I vaguely remember it being something to do with CA updates after Win 8 was foisted upon us, and we have had Win 10 since then, I could be wrong ofc but I can't think of anything else. I have this mod myself, my OS is Win 7pro, but I can't get it to launch, I have the physical copy of Anthology and I also "cracked" it but to no avail, is the download specific to steam only?

For all intents and purposes, the path to your mod should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Rome Total War Alexander\catw05 at least on Win 7
    Dunno for Win 10
Notice it's catw05 not catw 1.2, and the filter.san needs to be inside indeed. It is at the root of Alexander also.
I have no disc or cracked version either so they were not tested.
I have several campaigns running on catw 1.2.2 since a while and it seems pretty stable.

There is another trick also about custom battles (which makes a difference with Alex exe)
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Alexander\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -nm -show_err -mod:catw05
This one is for the campaign
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Alexander\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -nm -show_err -mod:catw05 -noalexander
The second one is for custom battles

    @The Despondent Mind
    Campaign screenshots are coming !

@cocobongoclub-DJ Thank you for your quick response, I have the mod working now, I had been trying with -nm -show_err -mod:catw05 in the target line but now I see it should be -nm -show_err -mod:catw05 -noalexander. On exiting the game I get a "cant find Duras" error window is this fixable or is there something I have missed? I shall have some fun exploring what looks to be a very interesting mod, there is some great work here, congratulations. Later I will probably make a Let's Play on my youtube channel, it's not a large channel, but in trying to promote it in my small way, is me saying thanks for your work and giving me the opportunity to have some fun playing a new mod for Rome 1, rept

    Default Re: CATW 1.2

    As stated, here are a few screenshots about the campaign;

Campaign start screen. Since on Alex.exe it's a provincial campaign, there are no short campaigns allowed. Anyway, catw 1.2 offers more diversity than catw 1.1 (or 2.0) which mostly focused on the Celts. It's not excluded that in the 1.2.5 version or over the Arverni would be swapped for the Sabaeans and the Mauryans replace another faction once again

Epirus, and the base roster at the start. Challenging as its a busy area, with the Illyrians to the North, Thracians in the east, and Macedonian in between and south.

Rome: Starting position, with the Samnites to the south and their allies, Etruscans and Celts in the north, 300 BC is key to that situation

The Arverni and their starting position and roster, mostly elite units that are long to obtain via the barracks and forge. Various nobles and elites units. Strangely on a long-term campaign they do much better than the Senones, north. They have plenty of space to expand in gaul alone, but the Bellovaci and Massilia are other serious regional competitors. The most immediate threat nearby mostly comes from the latter

The Bosporan Greeks. A mix of traditional Greek roster (like Massilia), with Thracian but moreover Scythian auxiliaries
The position is relatively easy, but the Sarmatians are a relative threat at the beginning.

The Getae. The "Northern Thracians" have more scythian influence now, on the black sea coast. It's a challenging position and finances will rapidly burn you if not successful on the battlefield. For that the starting roster is good, but just average to face the neighbouring factions which are generously filled with elites and experienced troops, managed by Alex AI and Darth Formations. A gambling start that will quickly test your abilities on the battlefield.

Massalia: That's the great novelty of this mod. They replace Pontus that does not exist at that time. Position is moderately challenging. Neither the Iberians, Arverni or Samnite would make you gifts. I have a campaign running now about 270 BC, took all the western Iberian coast, Tolosa, and northern Italy, and long at war with aggressive Samnites which eventually allied with the Romans and while almost beating them, found at war simultaneously with the Arverni, Romans and Illyrians. Units are old fashioned Greeks, average cavalry and some local auxiliaries like Ligures, so no real edge on the battlefield but back to pure tactics. The cheapest and more versatile proved to be the Massalian thuerophoroi

    Illyrian start in the campaign
This is a "barbarian" faction which starts with a good but small roster and land but three solid pirate fleets of Liburnae and Lemboi. Challenging although three settlements gave some financial backup at the start. Unfortunately the mechanics in the game does not authorize to use the fleets to plunder commercial lines, but that's a valid argument to blocus a whole coastline. The only real challenging fleet at the start is Ptolemaic and they are a long way east.

Samnites starting Campaign. Since the map is not large enough to accurately portray their real location and due to faction balancing with the Romans and encourage a more agressive AI, they also have a start in the north due to Etrusco-Celtic allies. The Samnite roster was created and overhauled over previous catw 1.1/2.0 existing units, with some new ones. The infantry is pretty darn solid and i had the Romans beaten and defeated in a few turns. The most impressive are the Lanceari that are both versatile and really reliable, with good balance of attack, protection and morale. The Samnite levies are kind of skirmishers, completementary to the socii and italic peltasts (tragularii). Access at the later stage to the Campanian cavalry helps too. Needsless to say they start at war with Rome.

By the way for those not accustomed to CATW, here are two of the latest skins made for Samnite officer and lesser general:

These are basically .tga .dds textures pasted over 3d models on precise locations. The reduced versions are used for each scale of view when scrolling down and up on aly units. Of course there are less polygons on these models than in Rome II, but they are almost as detailed. This can makes your computer laggy in very large battles (three factions with each 20 units) for example, in an environment (RS2 vegetation) which is already busy. If you choose in your graphical preferences lower res, the renderer will swap on the other skins you can see on the right. The smaller are shown for bird's view and in many cases sprites takes over.

One of the 150 loading screens of the add-on patch. It's a gathering of the most amazing artwork available on the antiquity, from concept art to recreations (Mc bride and others), and Rome 2 screens

Next time: Battle screenshots, i promise !

congobongo, thanks for your mod and massive work.
Please know that publishing the mod with the swastika symbol, even thought it was a former sign for the sun, it strictly forbidden in Germany. I would suggest to rework the artwork in this regard to make it useable in all countries.
