Default Best college degree for modding?

Long story short, I have 2 years of free college to use and I'd like to put it towards something that interests me (modding), but can also be turned into a secondary job (game/app dev, etc).
I've found two programs to choose from, and I'd appreciate any input on which might be more relevant based on descriptions from the school websites.

    Option 1 - Information Technology

    1. Computer Systems Analysts
    2. Computer Support Specialists
    3. Network Systems Analysts
    4. Data Communications Analysts
    5. Computer Programmers
    6. Help Desk Technician
    7. Web Programmers
    8. Computer Software Engineers
    9. Network and Computer Systems Administrators
    10. Other Information Technology related job titles are used as well.

    Option 2 - Game Programming

    1. Convergence Technology
    2. Information Systems Analyst
    3. Network Analyst
    4. Game Programming
    5. Software Development
    6. Mobile Development
    7. Web Design & Development

I don't claim to be an expert, but I would have thought IT would open you to a broader range and larger number of job opportunities than a degree in Game Programming might.

You can't get into computer science or software engineering?

For some reason I thought those weren't available as associate degrees - I was wrong.

Yep I figured you should have those options. Good luck whatever path you take.

Edit: I'd warn you against Game Development or IT.

Go for either software engineering or computer science. Personally I'm going for computer science, a majority of software architects have that degree. It's worth noting though that software engineering is new compared to computer science so that may change in the future or maybe not, CS can be more geared towards the study of computational algorithms (math that forms the basis for programming and computers) while software engineering can be more "how do we manage this project". See the book Systems analysis and design /Alan Dennis, Barbara Haley Wixom, Roberta M. Roth.–5th ed. for more details.

Some schools however only offer computer science as they view software engineering as the equivalent. In fact both degrees compete for the same job, although CS may be viewed as marginally more nerdy. By the way, unless you have the background I did you may be better off reading more about the courses each school offers as they are different and figuring out what one is best for you from there. Definitely look at whether they offer hands on practical aspects as well like systems design, that will give you a foundation in agile development methodologies. I've seen people hired by Google who don't have a clue what that is somehow aside from the name.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm finding much better school choices by searching for those instead.

It depends on what you want to mod. A huge part of modding is graphic design for example. You don't have to be a programmer to be a great modder.

But if you want to be a good programmer I suggest something like computer science with extra math. When you start writing serious code you will need to be a good mathematician.
