I think there was an Osprey book about it. I don't know much on the topic, if anything of worth.

There are two good links under the wiki entry:

    https://www.amazon.com/Indian-Prince.../dp/0521267277
The New Cambridge History of India, Volume 3, Part 6: The Indian Princes and their States

Looks like it would give you view from Company days to final development.

The Imperial Gazetteer of India vol. IV cited is available on line and that looks to be a snapshot of the state of affairs 1900

(page back for a brief note on how things historically (company and than early crown period))

But as you can see from the below about the Gwalior Campaign. You really are asking about two different things Before and after the Mutiny

    For some illustrations see http://princelystates.com/ArchivedFe...a-01-02c.shtml

These are from British cigarette cards of the 1930's and 40's, entitled "Military Uniforms of the British Empire Overseas," produced by John Player & Sons for inclusion in Player's Cigarettes. Each card is devoted to an overseas regiment under the crown, and 29 of the 50 cards document Indian and Indian States forces. The front of the card illustrates an officer or man of the regiment, while the back presents roughly 100 words of historical data.

Also if you can get hold of it:
"A History of The Indian State Forces" by H. H. The Maharaja of Jaipur
    Publisher: Orient Longmans 1967
It shows the vast range of India's State Forces and describes their lineage and insignia. A brief account of the history of each regiment and its fighting record. For example it covers: Bhavnagar Lancers, Bikaner Sadul Light Infantry, Tehri Garhwal Field Company Sappers And Miners, Ist Patiala State Infantry etc.

"The Indian Army" by Boris Mollo
    Publisher: New Orchard Editions 1986
