    Yeah sometimes it's unavoidable, but the Αp Data fix usually helps with random stutters, so give it a go and if you really have to upgrade we also have dedicated advising threads for that. In any case feel free to reach me

    Hello Greek Strategos,

    I have problems with FPS dropping to 17 in the battles where two armies collide on large unit scale. I think the problem is mostly CPU generated, since otherwise when there is small concentration of troops FPS are fine . I listened to the advice for using half refresh rate and it helped to the extent. Majority of graphic settings are on very high, with ultra textures

    What do you think I should do to boost performance(aside from buying new CPU) and what do you think what settings are best for this configuration? Sorry if Im asking questions for answers impossible for you to know, I just would like to know your opinion...

    Since many users find the updated ingame A.A quite good, I would suggest to give it a go and then try the more advanced A.A methods.



    Yeah, I was talking about settings from the dedicated NVIDIA panel with @Wilson. You could also use NVDIA Inspector for more advanced panel tweaks etc but that's another story (we could discuss it anytime though).
    I only use it to gain the profile and recommend it as a base optimizer for users with my specs or above. It does change the profile settings, however you cannot see most of these without the nividia inspector. I would never keep it on my computer, for some of the reasons you have mentioned. But for guys that don’t know the correct ball park to start in, its a sufficient choice. However, to recommend the optimizer in the OP and call experience trash is quite interesting. Though they have different functions, Razer cortex is guilty for almost all the cons you listed. Wouldn’t recommend either, except maybe for someone who is less knowledgeable & using experience to obtain the specialized settings and possibly get a broad idea of what configurations to play with

    I think you got me wrong buddy. I only recommended Cortex as an alternative to Smartclose. I never recommended or said anything positive about Experience...never! Plus when I wrote about GameBooster (specifically) it wasn't part of Experience's bundle, it was a standalone app and my suggestion was-is to use it separately if you must. Cortex isn't the culprit for all Experience's issues, Experience had many issues long before Cortex became part of it's bundle (dead screens, blue screens,crashes,clunky explorer, disappearing NVDIA panel). You can check them in the Program's Updates Archive.
    I'm not saying it's trash but it's surely problematic according to most Tech Sites and Pro Tech Reviewers. But It could be helpful for some people and I'm not telling you what to use or not. I'm just stating facts and general opinions about the specific program's behavior, that's all. Arguably neither GameBooster is perfect I agree, but it helps when someone wants fast auto disabling programs (still recommend Smartclose instead or manual) since I don't use automated processes much, but many users like them.

    Lastly, I believe you should always give alternatives to a user, but it's one thing to suggest something and totally different to present or give information about it's use

    Well, 960 isn't ''Gaming'' GPU tbh. It's more a media, movies user's choice. Τips and tweaks will certainly hep you a bit, but you'll be able to squeeze as much fps your hardware allows you. Instead of upgrading a specific component, I would suggest a full replace of your system for pure gaming purpose ofc.
    We have dedicated threads for that too, if you're interested just visit the Basement and we could discus it further.

    I get "headache" battles even at medium unit size on 15v15.

    With this hardware a battle of 15 units vs 15 units should work like a charm even on the highest settings. So something is definitely wrong on your end.

    Have you tried the solution in the point 6 in the opening post. That would be my first guess.

    Hi,
    1)Clean uninstall of NVIDIA's drivers with DDU (make sure to do it correctly by following the instructions) and Reinstall the latest ones.
    2)Verify your games cache with STEAM or preferably completely uninstall and reinstall Rome 2.
    3)Reapply step 6 App Data Fix.
    4)Delete every single mod from your Data folder.
    5)If you're using STEAM mods, make sure to unsubscribe all of them. Be 100% sure though.
    6)Run Vanilla Rome 2 without any mods.

    i dunno about this but last night i found a trick how to reduce lag on DEI 40v40....
    what i did is.... i changed the number of threads to 2... enables multi-threaded models. and it worked... although there are some few stuttering in the middle of a battle, but its not so bad as it was before... also, the thing is when i increase the number of threads to lets say 12 or more... the stuttering reduces but the game graphics also turned a little bit ugly.
    the unit detail becomes so "more like" dark in appear like the shadows almost got into the textures, and the gloss in the unit's skin is gone too..
    so for me, number of threads = 2 is pretty ideal in my current pc specs...
    P.S. i can run DEI on 40v40 well, but this VFX mod kills it so i have to find another alternative tweak to make it run smoothly. Luckily i reduced the unit sizes of DEI and found this tweak. Im planning to upgrade my CPU but i dont know how.. should i buy a whole new CPU unit? or ill just have to replace those cores?

    Thanx! Tried the things (not DDU) and rome vanilla ran way better. Could play 20v20 battle with good frames. Tried with DEI again but still getting to headache even with medium unit size. It isn't horribly bad frames, around 27-28 at lowest, but that is enough to make it unpleasant for the eyes. Vanilla ran better for sure now after following your steps.

    Whenever I launch the the game with the mods I get a message "Warning, the following mods are enabled" then a list of the mods and at the end, "this may cause unforeseen problems or instability in the game" Maybe this is normal? Thought worth mentioning anyways.

    Whenever I launch the the game with the mods I get a message "Warning, the following mods are enabled" then a list of the mods and at the end, "this may cause unforeseen problems or instability in the game" Maybe this is normal? Thought worth mentioning anyways.

    But have you reinstalled your GPU drivers at all as Greek Strategos advised you to do? Frankly, with that rig that you have you should easily be able to run 20vs20 battle on DeI on the highest, or nearly highest settings, with the fps of something between 25-40. So if you can't do that now, it means that something there is still not right.

    It's normally battles of 30vs30, or 40vs40 where your rig should begin to struggle as those battles prove too much for the CPU to handle.

    I did as he advised now yes, seems like I am above 30 frames most of the time (according to Fraps), but still feels very unpleasant for the eyes, and I am forced to stop after a while. Have been tweaking around with the monitor settings but really have no clue what the problem is now. Other games work good as gold.

    Anyhow, thanx for all the help you guys (:

    Like Seleukos already said, It must be something wrong still holding you back, probably in your installation. Have you tried the clean install-reinstall procedure ? DEI is heavier than Vanilla but your numbers are still low.

    These automatic updates to the GPU have proved quite problematic to me at times and some weeks ago I had to manually roll back to the older version after such an update and as a result, I decided to turn them entirely off.

    Yep, every automated Driver upgrade is usually disastrous. It's the first thing I disable (UAC is the second) when I boot a PC for the first time.

    I have now tried uninstalling Rome II (with revo uninstaller), unsubscribed from all the mods. Tried rolling back the GPU drivers, but there was nothing to roll back to, (: and done the steps mentioned in the opening Thread.
    As mentioned before, I seem to be above 30 fps most of the time (even 20v20 on medium unit size) but in this case texture quality on high only. Still it seems to the eyes as if the frames would be lower (still headache). I have played around with invidia settings but yet not managed to fix this. If I look at the CPU on task manager (logical processors view. showing CPU 0-7) some of them are running on 100%. Do you guys think the problem might have anything to do with that? Overall CPU on around 30 %. Also, I have used Nvidia inspector and tried limiting the frames on different numbers.

    Again, thanx for the support you two, much appreciated.

    Ι'm quite troubled with your issues! I haven't seen such low performance with your specs to be honest and I can't think of anything else. I'll try searching the other Forums for a similar problem though and let you know.

    Hi all!

    I've been having some strange performance issues.

    I stopped playing Rome 2 around May last year. Picked it up again this month.

    Performance was amazing when I was playing back then. 50+ fps on 20x20 battles on DeI (while zooming into fights); everything running smooth and perfect.

    Now, however, DeI seems to be causing some serious performance issues. I just need to click on 'Start Battle' to have an immediate drop of 5 to 10 fps depending on my army's size, and when armies clash my average is 30-.

    I originally thought that maybe this was due to some Rome 2 new patch. Owing to that I followed a number of threads (including this one's original post) but to no avail. Then I read on a recent comment on this thread that I should try disabling my mods. I did so and, voila, vanilla Rome 2 is running amazingly well. I just had to I activate DeI and crappy performance is on again.

    Did something change in DeI over these months that would engender such a performance downgrade?

    I didn't change anything on my PC except keeping my GPU drivers updated.

    Is there anything I could do? Rome 2 equals DeI to me, so there is no way I would ever play vanilla.
