    Default Pembroke Castle, Hastings Estates

Pembroke Castle had its first foundations laid in 1093, during the Norman Invasion of Wales, by an Arnulf of Montgomery, a powerful land magnate during the early days of the Norman dynasty. Eventually the castle was granted to William Marshal, during the reign of Richard I, who would rebuild the castle with stone. The castle has served a number of families, who were created Earl of Pembroke, for the past three hundred years. Its first major occupants was the de Clare family, who reigned from 1138 to 1176. The title would eventually be inherited by the Marshal family, when a marriage was arranged by the Countess of Pembroke and William Marshal. His family would hold it from 1189 to 1245. The following family was that of the de Valence family, whose title was inherited in 1339 by the Hastings family. Lawrence Hastings gained the castle and its property by female inheritance from the de Valence family.

    Character Information

    Hastings of Pembroke
The Hastings family is a long standing family, whose first known recording in the English annals appears in 1295, when John Hastings is summoned to Parliament as Lord Hastings. His father was Henry de Hastings, who had been created Baron Hastings by Simon de Montfort in 1263. After three generations, it was Lawrence Hastings, a baron during the reign of Edward II and Edward III, that the family gained control of Welsh land in the form of the Earldom of Pembroke. This fourth creation of the title, since it went into abeyance after the extinction of the de Valence family, was made in 1339 and would be held by the Hastings family for another two generations. Lawrence's son, John Hastings, the Elder, would marry the Baroness of Manny, adding yet another title to their family which would be inherited by his son, John the Younger, in 1375 and 1384, after the death of his mother, Lady Manny.

Currently, John Hastings is the young Earl of Pembroke, Baron Manny, Baron Hastings and Baron Abergavenny. Recently, the young Hastings married the daughter of the 3rd Earl of March, Philippa Mortimer, sister to the present Earl of March and Ulster, Roger Mortimer. The Earl of Pembroke is remarked as a kind and generous man.

A traveler delivers a letter to Pembroke, close to Ash Wednesday
    Honorable Lord Pembroke,

As steward of the Mortimer family in Ludlow, I can with authority inform you that, with confirmed permission from the several parties in charge of the young Philippa's guardianship, including the young lady herself, you may begin a conversation with the young woman by letter and by limited visitation at your whim. Both the gracious sir Thomas and our Lord, young master Roger, do express that they are content to open the possibility of a union between the Mortimer family and the Hastings family.

Sealed with the Earldom of March,
Signed by Sir Peter de la Mare, Steward of Ludlow

A rider arrives at Pembroke with a letter for the lord, delivered from the Earl of March's hand himself

John Hastings, Earl of Pembroke, my brother-in-law,

I have come home to Wigmore from across the small sea that divides us and a world of chaos, and intend for you to join with me when I return back across, if that is still your wish. Bring men-at-arms and men quick on their feet, I recommend. You may meet me in Wigmore or at Chester, but it is best if you sail together with me as I have our transports arranged.
