    Default Romanian Public Protests

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...=.642eaed50ad6

    http://www.euronews.com/2017/02/01/r...graft-offences

Tens of thousands of people have been marching lately in Romania to protests the decriminalization of offences such as graft and abuse of power in public conduct, not to mention corruption. This would literally bring out a considerable number of prisoners, and it would also close the current investigations on a considerable number of politicians within the country, hence the uproar.

The revolt brought out tens of thousands of people in bitter cold, which will soon make it even bigger as the law was adopted late last night (at midnight), in secrecy.

The law will take effect in 10 days, until then it is up to the people to protest and for the Magistrates and Constitutional Court to take action.

A little info from Romania, since you might have noticed a considerable number of news lately about it.

The majority party has a considerable number of politicians/members indicted for corruption and other problems.

    Including the party chief.

So they're doing everything they can to not go to jail.

How likely would the court intervene? (i.e does Romania have a good track record of judicial oversight and responsibility?)

And since it's an EU member (at least I think lol), shouldn't the EU be weighing in on this?

The EU has condemned this in very strong terms - and it was also discussed today in the European Parliament as well.

The Constitutional Court has to be notified officially by the Ombudsman. BUT - the Ombudsman himself has campaigned for this law indirectly. So the President and the Attorneys have put public and private pressure on the Ombudsman to take action and notify the Constitutional Court officially.

Because if the Constitutional Court is notified, there are serious grounds for the law to be annulled. Almost a guarantee that it will.

Surprising to see corrupt politicians be so brazen, but this is do or die for them, so shame goes out the window. Looks like they have succeeded in any case.

Surely something this outrageous should be enough to topple the government??

Also I'm going to be in Bucharest from the 17th-20th so I hope things don't escalate too badly!

The protests are entirely peacefull and will probably die down by then.

Anyway the Constitutional Court has been officially notified. Now it rests in their hands. 3 of the 8 members were appointed by the socialists so they are guaranteed to vote for the law. Another 3 were appointed by the former president, who is also looking at judicial trouble in the future so the vote can go either way.

It seems that the protests were successful and the law has been repealed!

It has been repealed, the decree - but they can easily send it to the Parliament and it will get passed.

    So it's not over yet.

Dishonest to the end. Basically former Soviets trying to ruin the country once again. Who on earth voted this people?

18% of the population. The Socialists got 45.7% out of 40% voters turnout. The 60% who didn't vote because of being disgusted with politicians in general, made the Socialists' victory possible.

Hopefully lessons will be learned for the next elections.

Old people, retired people, poor people, desperate people, people on benefits, uneducated people, nostalgic people, brainwashed/indoctrinated people. When the rest of the population (60%) didn't bother going to vote these people become the majority.

    Lessons to be learned? Definitely.

But until then, the people are still protesting. They are out on the streets, even if 2-3000 people on weeknights. 50.000 in the weekend.

This has turned into an absurd comedy.

The PM, from the party that proposed the infamous Law 13 that triggered the protests, refused to resign and will now face a vote of no-confidence from his own party.

The party that put the current government is now trying to sack it.
