Mistwood and Stonehelm taken with overwhelming odds.
Brynden Tully ascended the steps and joined his King atop the ramparts of the recently-captured Lannister fort. The cries of dying prisoners could be heard behind them. Though hopelessly outnumbered, the Lannisters had refused to surrender. Perhaps they had been told that reinforcements would soon arrive. No matter. Lancel had been warned that refusing to surrender would result in no quarter being given. And King Robb was a man of his word.
Let us hope he is also a man of forgiveness, Brynden reflected.
"Your plan worked perfectly, my king. The Lannisters appear to have been lulled into a false sense of security by our long...period of patience," he stated carefully. "There is now nothing standing between us and Ashemark or the Crag. I congratulate you on your victory."
It was almost funny that he chose his words with such care now, when he had not done so the last time he and his nephew had discussed the strategy for their campaign. Or the lack thereof, he had thought at the time. He had been furious at the lengthy delay in pressing their advantage after the fall of Golden Tooth, and the perceived lack of any ambition on their leader's part to ever venture forth from the Riverlands again. And he had let his King know it, brushing aside Robb's justifications. He hadn't wanted to listen at the time, so he hadn't. He had accepted his orders because Robb was King and he was not, but that was the extent of his cooperation.
How wrong he'd been. King Robb would be fully within his rights to give him a thorough dressing-down here in front of all of the men. If that happened, he would take it like a man and consider himself better for it.
Instead, King Robb turned to him, the barest ghost of a smile settling over his lips.
"It was our victory, Uncle."
Brynden felt his admiration for his nephew swell within his chest. In the future he would have more faith in his King, but he would always speak plainly to him and share his counsel. Just as Robb intended.
"We may take our time in preparing for war, and display a great deal of patience," Robb continued, gazing out over the plains to the west, to the great snow-capped mountain peaks looming in the distance. "But when we move, we do so decisively, and with iron conviction. It is the way the North."
Brynden considered that for a moment, then cracked a grin. "Aye, and let it be the way of the Riverlands as well."
A long wait makes for sweeter victory, after all.
