Robert's Rebellion
Setting
Prince Rhaegar has vanished with Lyanna Stark, causing scandal and outrage. Lord Stark's firstborn son and heir has postponed his wedding to a daughter of Lord Tully and stormed into the Red Keep calling on Rhaegar to "come out and die". The Mad King has him arrested, and summons Lord Stark to answer for his son's behaviour.
Upon Lord Stark's arrival, he is arrested and put on trial, where our setting will open.
Character Arrangements
The following web of relationships will have to be created:
- House Tully will need two teenage daughters. The first must be promised to no-one (but had at one time been a potential match to Lord Lannister's firstborn son), and the second must be promised to Lord Stark's first son. Their marriage was recently postponed.
- House Stark will need a soon-to-be-dead Lord, soon-to-be-dead Heir, a second son who is in the Vale, and a daughter who is captive to Rhaegar and may die. The player may create uncles and cousins for Lord Stark if they are unwilling to be stuck with a very young Lord on his own.
- House Baratheon will need a Lord who is in the Vale, and at least one younger brother. The player may also create uncles and cousins if they are unwilling to be stuck with one young main character.
- House Arryn will need a Lord, who is fostering Lord Baratheon and second-son Stark.
---- Lord Baratheon and second-son Stark must be of a similar age, between 18-24.
---- Lord Arryn will need to be old enough to foster them, older than 40. He may, however, have children if the player wishes it, and they may be any reasonable age (and can be friends with Baratheon and Stark if the players wish it)
- House Lannister needs at least one son, and the heir must be in the Kingsguard. He must be a young man, old enough to be a reasonable match to the Tully daughter. He must be below the age of 30.
- House Targaryen has the following members:
---- King Aerys II, the Mad King (38)
---- Queen Rhaella Targaryen (37), Sister-Queen of Aerys II.
---- Prince Rhaegar Targaryen (23), whose wife may be played by the Martell player if Dorne is opened to players.
---- Prince Viserys Targaryen (6)
---- King Aerys and Prince Rhaegar are mandatory characters. If the playerbase in general agrees, Viserys can also be made old enough to be playable (made into a teenager, aged 14-18 for example).
Lords Paramount
The whole 7 Kingdoms are united, but we have often made the Iron Isles and Dorne NPCs. This will likely be done for the Iron Isles but if there is interest in Dorne, it will be opened. This would mean we need at least 6 Lords Paramount, with the Martells being a possible seventh and the Iron Isles being an unlikely eighth.
What to expect early game
We will start with war being seemingly inevitable: two Starks will die and the Aerys player will be obliged to summon second-son Stark and Lord Baratheon to the same fate. From there on the players take over, and Lord Arryn can either betray his wards or call his banners alongside the Stormlands and North, with the Riverlands very likely to follow suit (though interestingly, no formal ties yet exist there...). Players will likely get a bumper starting purse to allow early militia edicts and professional troop hire.
If war starts, armies will be allowed to start moving and the war will be on. It will end when one pretender loses support, by whatever means. If one of the original pretenders dies, their supporters may opt to back the claim of the next in that line (eg backing Rhaegar Targaryen for King if Aegon is slain or dies). The losing pretender, if alive and able, may flee to Essos and attempt a mid-game comeback if they can gather support from abroad, though a Targaryen victory is likely more secure as a Baratheon will struggle to find meaningful support.
The winning side will not be bound by any amnesty rules. The previous game showed that a vindictive winner can spur RP for weeks to come by creating winners and losers, rather than the civil war ending with no one really gaining or losing anything.
Also if the Targaryens win, there's always that fan theory that Rhaegar himself wasn't entirely opposed to a palace coup to remove or sideline his insane dad and establish himself as King or Regent...
Detailed information on the STAB relationship web, plus Targaryen requirements
These stipulations are an attempt at being exhaustive, so if there's something you've thought of that isn't covered here it should be alright to do it: these rules are an attempt to preserve the family relationships that lead to Robert's Rebellion happening, so you can customise your family as much as you want as long as you're not disrupting that starting balance. If you're in any doubt, run what you want to do past the mods, we'll be as flexible and accomodating as possible as long as it doesn't upset the STAB axis.
House Stark
I am going to refer to your main character as Eddard in this section. You don't need to call him Eddard yourself.
1. You'll need at least 1 Lord with 2 sons and 1 daughter. Your Lord and eldest son are going to die in the opening event, so the second son (Eddard) is your main as he will become Lord Stark shortly after the game starts. You may write in more siblings, uncles, and cousins for him if you want to.
2. Eddard must be aged between 18-24, and must be within 2 years of Robert Baratheon. Negotiate with the Baratheon player on ages.
3. Eddard must start the game in the Eyrie, where he has been fostered alongside Robert Baratheon by Lord Arryn.
4. Eddard must not be married, nor have any pre-arranged berothals. You're not required to marry into House Tully, but you must start the game without planned ties. Eddard's older brother was supposed to marry a Tully daughter and that will be known ingame.
5. Lyanna must be in the Tower of Joy, pregnant. She will undergo a modified birth roll with a much higher chance that she dies. If the Stark and Baratheon players wishes it, she can be guaranteed to die. She was to be wed to Robert Baratheon, but ran off with Prince Rhaegar under confused circumstances.
6. The Arryn player has been given some freedoms on writing his family and may request your permission to have children or grandchildren of his own that are of age with Eddard and grew up with him. The Baratheon player and yourself may agree to or veto this.
House Baratheon
1. Your Lord must be named Robert Baratheon. He does not need to be the same personality as canon Robert, but the setting needs his name.
2. Robert must be aged between 18-24, and must be within 2 years of Eddard Stark. Negotiate with the Stark player on ages.
3. Robert must start the game in the Eyrie, where he has been fostered alongside Eddard Stark by Lord Arryn.
4. Robert must have at least one younger brother to succeed him in the Stormlands should you win the rebellion.
5. Robert must not be married, but is supposed to be wed to Lyanna Stark. If the Stark and Baratheon players wish it, Lyanna can be guaranteed to die.
6. The Arryn player has been given some freedoms on writing his family and may request your permission to have children or grandchildren of his own that are of age with Eddard and grew up with him. The Stark player and yourself may agree to or veto this.
House Arryn
1. Your Lord must be old enough to foster the Stark and Baratheon boys. He must therefore be aged over 40.
2. Your Lord may have children (and grandchildren if old enough), even grand/children of age with the Stark and Baratheon boys if they agree to it.
3. Your Lord may have children (and grandchildren if old enough) even if the Stark or Baratheon players refuse the "childhood friends" angle, you must simply have had them being fostered elsewhere in the Seven Kingdoms while you yourself were fostering Stark and Baratheon.
House Tully
1. Your Lord must have two daughters aged 16-24 that are unmarried and have no pre-arranged berothals. The first one was supposed to marry the Heir to Casterly Rock but that was cancelled when he joined the Kingsguard, and the second was supposed to marry the Heir to Winterfell but the wedding has been postponed because the Heir rode to King's Landing and got arrested. As you do not know he is about to die, it is your expectation that the wedding will happen once this whole affair with Rhaegar has been smoothed over.
House Lannister
1. Your Lord must have at least one son, aged 30 or less, who is his firstborn and is in the Kingsguard.
2. Your Kingsguard son was at one point meant to marry the first Tully daughter, but Aerys appointed him to the Kingsguard.
3. Your Kingsguard son must start in King's Landing, as that was an important factor in the Lannisters staying neutral for as long as they did.
House Martell
1. You have the right to require that Prince Rhaegar be married to a daughter or sister of your Lord, but you are not required to exercise that right. You also have the right to having up to two children by her, both below the age of 5. She must be in King's Landing.
House Targaryen
1. Aerys and Rhaegar must be their canon ages. Aerys must have his canon wife. Rhaegar must have his canon wife if the Martell player requires it. If there is no Martell player, the choice is the Rhaegar player's.
2. Viserys Targaryen may be moved up to no older than age 18 provided the playerbase is not largely against the idea. If a player wishes to play a grown-up Viserys, they are encouraged to discuss it in the OOC chat before signing him up.
3. Rhaegar must have abducted Lyanna Stark and got her with child. She is confined to the Tower of Joy. She was married to you by force, as tradition had allowed multiple wives in the past, but the Faith of the Seven may not recognise this and the Martells may not approve. Still, the prophecy required it.
4. Rhaegar will not attend the trial of Lord Stark and his son.
The Kingsguard
1. Three of your number must be at the Tower of Joy.
2. At least one of your number must be with King Aerys II.
