    With client rulers in EB II though, I would say that taking Massilia and Syrakousai (and maybe other) may be done much, much earlier as long as you make them allies instead of establishing full control.

    Massilia at least, I always go for it as soon as I have a bit of breathing space, otherwise it always gets taken by the gauls or the iberians. And having to defend it also ties up some of my resources there so that I do not go full SPQR on anyone else's ass.
