    Chapter 6 .

    NGS .
The great war has come to a strange kind of peace .Fighting still continues in the colonies and on small fronts .But with the British and Russian withdrawal ,there is little that the axis powers can do at the moment .In other news the emperor Franz Joseph of Austria is severly ill .Many say that his days are numbered .At least he may die a happy death if the rumour of a huge Axis invasion of Britian is true .America and Mexico meanwhile remain neutral .But in France the war has ended .After the conquest of Algeria in which according to reports only supplied by the Spanish secret service 40 men fought and defeated 1000 frenchmen ,France has exiled itself to Britian .But of course the Algerian news seems like pure garbage .After all it’s the official tip by the secret service !

Spainsh soldiers after victory at the battle of Fadl estate in Algeria .

    Field dogs .

“Aah ,hevenly” said captain Samuel Mendez peering his head out of the new excellent storage machine that had just arrived for the 11th infantry .”The refrigerator is such a great invention, pity its for the food and not for me,the heat is so much ,I really need the cooling” he continued .They had been stationed to take out the last pockets of French resistance in Algeria .France had excepted defeat ,but some of its men had been reluctant to surrender thinking that soon the war would turn and so the 11th rifles had been sent to take them out .Just now a truck had arrived with ammunition and supplies for the 40 man team of elite desert infantry .Among other things it contained a refrigerator for food storage .Currently the captain was sitting in the back of the supplies truck while the rest of the units followed behind on horseback or camel back .For those even the truck was like a new invention .It was a bit slower than what a horse could move if it moved fast .They were heading for some much needed rest at Sheikh Abul Fadl’s small oasis estate for some much needed rest .Fadl was an ally who had agreed to give them sanctuary .Not that he had any option .The King had ordered the immediate imprisonment or death of any natives who refused to cooperate .

After about 2 hours they reached the oasis of the Sheikh .It was basically a mini feudal system .The sheikh owned the oasis and some 20 or so labourers worked and lived on his farm on the oasis .The sheikh welcomed them in traditional style by giving coffee and dates to the entire crew .For their stay a special camp had been set up near the Sheikh’s house and a kitchen had been built there that served French food except pork of course .Unable to take in the Algerian heat anymore the majority of the men retired to the camp .But the captain instead discussed with the Sheikh .”We are finding a couple of men ,Frenchmen ,about 25 in number ,these people must have run out of ammunition but don’t want to surrender ,they must be pretty desperate .” said captain Mendez .”Don’t worry” said the sheikh smiling “Soon enough you will get the men ,very soon indeed .

Captain Mendez with Sheikh Abul Fadl . Fadl estate .

The stuff that Fadl had given them was good .It was some kind of smoke filled with some strong drug plant,he had given it to them to compensate for the fact that as a muslim he had no alcohol .The setting sun was a treat to the eyes .Even more so with the power of this stuff .As the captain watched to the sky and looked below to the little fire around which they were smoking ,he saw the moon which was now partially visible .It appeared to be smiling at him .Then a rabbit hopped from the moon and it started to grow increasingly brighter and brighter .Then he saw a strange maiden, she was now climbing down from the moon via a series of glowing golden steps .But why was she wearing strange clothes .Then the maiden took out a…. a musket .”A maiden holding a musket what?” said Mendez .He quickly woke up from his dreams .The figure in front of him fired 2 quick shots killing the men near him instantly .Mendez slapped himself to get rid of the heaviness and dreaming caused by the stuff .Standing before him was not a maiden .It was Fadl in his traditional white Arab dress .In his hand he held a musket .It was pointed at Mendez .

Before he could say anything Fadl commanded “Hands up” .”What is happ…”cried Mendez .Then Fadl shot him with his pistol in the leg .Mendez was a tough man .The bullet did not hurt him much .It only made him obedient .Then he watched as the sounds of battle were heard around him .Then Fadl led him to their camp .To Mendez’s horror his men were fighting with..with the same Frenchmen whom they had been searching .Fadl had not only betrayed them .He had made a complete fool of them .Then Fadl shouted “Spainyards throw down your weapons, look”.The fighting stopped .For sometime there was an absolute silence as Spainyard,Frenchman and arab alike stood absolutely still .Then the spainyards threw down their weapons .A Frenchman slowly moved forward to collect them .Fadl watched triumphantly as he had won .Suddenly Mendez quickly remembered his army school days .He begin to dream again .If an enemy has a gun to your head, you count to 3 ,pray to god and take out any hidden weapon you have and use it on the stomach or any part below the chest and above the waist of the enemy .Mendez woke up .He quickly counted to 3 .He did not bother to pray to god .He was an atheist .He took out his knife and sprung for Fadl .As he was aiming for the waist .Fadl who had forgotten to install a bayonet on his rifle was defenceless .He just could not fire .In a split second the knife was in his stomach .Fadl dropped his rifle .In another split second ,Mendez picked up the musket and shouted to his men “to arms” .The spainyards were quick to follow orders .They all quickly ducked behind the small defensive barricades that they had used during the initial fighting and quickly picked up their guns .Then they fired volleys .For some time the frenchmen replied .But having run out of ammunition and the conastant fire from behind their lines coming from Mendez who had ducked behind a tree was too much and they were forced to surrender

Later on Mendez personally begged forgiveness from his men .As they say the drug destroys a man .

    The king .

The Kaiser clutched a glove in his good hand .It was a poor substitute for his withered left hand .King Carlos was in Berlin in the conference of the entente .Spain had replaced the treacherous italians in it .But emperor or no emperor Carlos was still like the junior partner in this war and all the power was held by the kaiser .He could be a terrible man in his bad moods .Currently though there was a need to be in a bad mood .The british had now completely retreated from Europe and turned Britian into a fortress .A fortress with a dirty moat called the channel .And they still refused to surrender .With Paris taken and Russia retreating to Moscow ,the reich and the entente were having a bad time .They had almost defeated their enemies and now they were forced to stop in their tracks .”So what to do “asked the Kaiser .”We wait them out” said the old Franz Joseph ,emperor of the Austro Hungarian empire .”Do you think that the british are hiding in some small crumbling fort majesty, britian can produce food on its own,yes they will have difficulties, but the british will overcome them “Replied the Kaiser .”I think that the best way is to do something no one had ever succeded in since the times of William of Normandy, direct naval invasion of Britian whlist attacking their colonies in Asia .”Said Carlos .”You are right,we need to take the risk, there is nothing else that we can do “ replied the Kaiser .It was finalized .The greatest risk in the greatest war uptil now would soon be attempted .

Silly British cartoon depicting the kaiser harrasing his allies .The reality was not that bad .

    Chapter 7 .

    NGS .

In sensational news the IRA did something unparalleld in history .Through a series of controlled uprisings all over Ireland and a series of assasinations of important British leaders ,the IRA and the local populations in Ireland got together to form a military about 80% of the size of the British military and forced Britian to sign its independence right away .For a few weeks this new country was looking just for the highest bidder .Now in shameless greed for power they have allowed Axis troops to take over Ireland .Initially England tried to resist ,but they only managed to occupy the northen half of Ireland ,now trenches have been put across the province of Dublin .It looks like Ireland will become a new theatre of trench warfare .The brave men of Europe will be bogged down in those trenches again .Its August and the Austrian emperor is in his last moments .He is terminally ill .

    Revolution in Ireland .

    The king .

For king Carlos what had happened since that hot March day in the Kaiser office in Berlin was difficult to digest .The Kaiser was like professer Moriarty the legendary don of London in the strand Magzine which was becoming so much popular nowadays due to some chap called Arthur Conan Doyle .He had the IRA on the payroll .For months since the war had started the IRA had been plotting with the Kaiser to overthrow Britian and become independent .But the wily Kaiser was constantly telling them to wait .Many times did the IRA become impatient .But each time the Kaiser told them to wait .Finally when all was lost and it had become impossible to conquer Britian ,the Kaiser had used this trump card of his .Within a week the IRA well supported by every Irishman alive started the biggest revolution in the world since the French revolution .Then Carlos ordered the Spanish military to support the German troops in taking over control of Ireland which the Irish themselves had given to them for protection after independence .Of course the local British governer of Dublin had been made to sign the papers of the independence of Ireland at the point of the gun .The British knowing that such a move could devastate their nation, immediately moved up to take out the irish .But they were too late .So brilliantly fast had the Axis troops moved that before the British could reach beyond Dublin, southern Ireland had already been occupied by the Axis military .Now though a dirty trench war had started and it did not look like it would stop soon .What Spain needed was an ace to achieve a breakthrough .There was only one unit in the whole army which could bring about a miracle .The most special of Spain’s special forces, the 6th rifles .

The 6th rifles .Though only a handfull of men remain in the unit ,it is rich in experience and very tough .

    Field dogs .

The battle of Limerick was a gruesome affair .The 6th rifles now down to just 12 men had been clubbed together with the rest of the Spanish military which in turn had been clubbed together with the rest of the axis military forces which had a fractional numerical advantage .The county of Limerick lying peacefully in the Irish romance had become the site of the most gruesome battles of the war .Over 400000 people died in this ugly trench battle .The 6th rifles were stationed in the centre west position in the trenching .The germans felt uneasy because back on the French fronts they had been fighting in huge planned trenches ,but now they had been forced to fight alongside the smelly turks and strange latino Hispanic Spanish soldiers in badly constructed temporary trenches .While on the grand map the Kaiser was the warlord ,on the actual battlefield the Spanish army though smaller and weaker commanded everyone .This had been the kaiser’s order itself .He acknowledged the fact that he Spanish had much more brainy generals .”If only I had such generals rather than the rotten bunch I posses “.he was reported to have said .Gabro was dying to get out of the smelly trenches .Back in France he had gone to the top of the Eiffel tower and that was good because some german fool went after him to the top and destroyed about 13 feet of the tower with a small explosive

Good updates, I like the way that you show us what Mendez can see from his perspective, when he sees the 'strange maiden'. The historical images contribute well to your story, too. I look forward to seeing the 6th rifles in action again, they seem to have a distinctive reputation.

    Chapter 8 .

    Field dogs .

It may have been a bloody battle but Gabro was just cursing his own fate all the time .This was a purely trench battle and there was no space for heroics here .They were being shelled 24 hours a day and each time they were shelled atleast one man died .Then there were the dirty lice and the water which flooded the trenches.Gabro was amazed by the camera which was a great invention new to Spanish armies .It was used to record moments that you could easily forget in your old age. .But thankfully the 6th rifles had only token casualties for the first 5 days .It was only after the first 5 days at Limerick that the 6th rifles were issued an order .Retreat .

Apparently there was one alternate route where the 6th rifles could sneak and cross the enemy frontlines .Limerick to Dublin there were continuous trenches but the trenches ended near some mountains south of Dublin .The message was .What if an experienced team like the 6th rifles could go behind enemy lines from those mountains ?

Richardo Gabro cursed himself .He had taken along his favourite military blanket along with him for the trek through enemy lines in the rain .Now he forgot that he had to use the same blanket at night .The 6th rifles had not encountered any major resistance .They usually trekked only at night .But today as the evening grew ,Gabro and the rest of the 12 men were excited .For today at midnight, they had to cross the Hakkon strip,A strip of minor defences which was not much, but it was like the first time that they would have to cross heavily defended enemy patrols,of course not as well defended as the frontlines .The plan was to go as a bunch of Irish farmers on a cart .They had forged documents with them so hopefully there would be no problem.

The Englishman was feeling cold out in these cursed Irish woods .It was as if Ireland was taking the revenge of the entire 700 years in these cursed months .Why should he guard here when almost nobody came by the strip ?All of a sudden he saw noises as his fellow teammates all emerged from their naps .Who could be it in the middle of the night? Those were carts .On them were some Irishmen on carts .There was only one faint lamp on each of the 2 carts .As they came nearer and nearer their features became more prominent .But they did not seem like typical Irishmen .Something was wrong .There faces were not Irish ,more like some sort of Italians or maybe Mexicans .”Huh who cares “muttered the englishman to himself .

“We are foreign workers whose families have been working in the green land since the 18th century .”the leader of the men was saying .”Its better to travel at night so we do not get hurt”he continued while showing them the identification of himself and his men .”Still it is hard to let you people go,you look suspicious to me,I will have to call my superiors “said the Englishman .”Ok ,but make sure that you do not get us killed by axis weapons in the process”the leader of the farmers said .”Let me check your baggage “roared the Englishman .”Gosh”thought Jovan, they had forgotto conceal the weapons properly .The Englishmen first saw the frontal baggage which contained stuff like farming tools and hay .For so much time the guards kept on checking it looking for loopholes but found none inside .Then they began to check the bags beneath .Jovan symbolically told his men to ready their revolvers in their shirts in case the guards found the hidden weapons beneath the hay stuffed inside the secondary baggage .One Englishman suddenly shouted .”Sir”Jovan readied his pistol .

All of a sudden came a growling noise, the Englishman freezed,it was a huge wolf, and it was so close to him,he could hear its breath, his fault,he should have checked the forest at both sides of him .Suddenly it attacked without warning .”Am I dead”thought the Englishman as several sounds of growling and confusion and gunfire came .No he was alive .Somebody had shot the wolf in mid flight itself .”Who shot him my good lads”asked the Englishman .”Sir it was this farmer he said pointing to Sanchez who had shot him with his revolver .”My good man,you saved my life ,now I trust you, actually I cannot repay you ever, take these 400 pounds and you can go .But if you want some food or drinks you can stay”he said in honeysweet words .”Sorry sir but we have to go”said Sanchez taking the money .All was good but Jovan and Gabro could only breath well when they were beyond the strip .

The strip in happier times .

I wonder if the 6th rifles will be able to get behind enemy lines? This sounds like a dangerous mission.

    Chapter9

    Homefront .

Alvin Carlos shrugged .Another day of shouting like a fool on the streets .The things he did for fame .For the last 7 months he had been in a group called 'Stop the war, stop the sufferings' .The group's ultimate aim was to oppose the government, show sympathy for the enemy, say that the men on the front are worthless brainwashed victims and overall oppose the war .An amateur theatre artist who got rejected everywhere,Alvin saw it as a golden chance to get fame.He personally hardly agreed with the groups agendas but his skills in public had propelled him to the top of the groups hierarchy .So here he was standing and shouting like an idiot in the plaza garden in Madrid .The others in his group held boards behind him .Some among the group were really commited to the group .But hardly any pedestrians watched them .The Jingoistic population of Spain saw the group as a nuisance .Why thats why a new wargoal of acquiring Catalonia had been added .Suddenly the troops came and Alvin packed up and started to run like everyday .

    Field dogs .

After the strip there was only one small estate or partial forest between the 6th rifles and Dublin .The plan was simple .To escape the English patrols they would move in the night .But the night had its own problems .Vicious ironic 'German ' sheperds were deployed to smell and take down any problems in the forest .Before entering ,Jovan drew up a plan .Somebody would have to create a diversion for the dogs and the patrols would follow .Even before he could finish Sanchez shouted "I will take care of it sir " .They all looked at him with surprise .Just the last day a spy had come to them with some commands .Among the things he said was that Sanchez's family had been killed by a French terrorist .But he had shown no remorse .Currently Jovan did not argue with Sanchez .He half knew what was to come .

The night had been cold and dark when the English mounties heard a loud gunshot to the west .The dogs which had been growling towards the opposite side for the last few minutes suddenly turned to the west now .Within minutes they were let free with half of the men behind them and the other half looking to the west for any mischief .Sanchez was making a huge ruckus firing away his colt revolver .When the dogs came he shot one and injured the other but it took only another 3 minutes for the dogs to maul him .But not wanting to be caught alive Sanchez then pressed the revolver to his heard and fired a shot .His nerves managed to retain enough memory to fire another before all was gone .Nobody noticed or questioned why the dogs had earlier been growling to the east .

By morning the 6th rifles were on the outskirts of Dublin in the Irish rebel camp ready for action .The war would soon be over .

    NGS.

Its been just 20 days since the IRA savagely attacked Dublin and cleared the way for the Axis troops to take Dublin .Finally Britian and the French government in exile has surrendered .The armistice implies that the British and French armies will be cut down to size .France will have to cede Catalonia to Spain and it remains to be seen what will the outrageous demands of the kaiser will be .It is a great victory .Long live the king .

    Unrelated .
Sorry to Alwyn .I just ran out of spanish names .

    Chapter 9 .

    Homefront .

The war on the field may have been over but the war at home was not .Gabro had his revolver and his list of orders at hand .The loose ends had to be removed .He was being paid the fattest salary that an afterwar government agent had ever been paid in Spain .

Alvin Carlos was at the construction site of his new house in Madrid .After the war ended he had gotten back to his primary job of shopkeeping and profits had suddenly soared .Now he had buyed a new house all to himself away from his irritating sister and her 19th century timelocked husband.

So Spain remianed good and Carlos died. The story thus endshere on a good note.

It's helpful to see what motivates Alvin Carlos and what caused Sanchez to deal with the guard dogs in the way that he did. I will be interested to see how your use of Floor 13 contributes to your AAR.

You mentioned that you ran out of Spanish names. Here's a method I use: I search online for historical people of a particular profession - such as artists, novelists, poets, playwrights or generals. For example, there is a Wikipedia page with a list of 19th century Spanish writers. Obviously, your story is set in the early 20th century, but hopefully late-19th century Spanish names would be close enough. I normally mix up the first names and surnames.

For example: Antonio Aparisi Guijarro was a Spanish politician and journalist; Juan José Arbolí y Acaso was a priest and writer. I might use their names to create the characters of Antonio José Arboli y Acaso and Juan Aparisi Guljarro. Obviously, we need to be a bit careful with this. Famous novelists, poets and generals might have names indicating that they were members of the nobility; we might accidentally use such a name for a character from a peasant family. Also, the names of famous historical people might relate to specific cultures, regions or even other countries. (Not everyone in Spain in the 19th century would have had a Spanish name - their family might have moved from France or Italy, for example). But that would not necessarily be a bad thing. For example, suppose you discovered that Antonio was more of an Italian name than a Spanish one, you could use that as part of the character's back-story. Of course, you do not have to use my method - there are other ways of doing this.
