Thread: Domus Cornelii Scipiones A.

  1. #1

    Default Domus Cornelii Scipiones A.

The domus of the Cornelii Scipiones Asiatici, the descendants of the victor of Magnesia. The domus is rather large, but it has known better times and the frescoes and decorations are somewhat old-fashioned and antiquated. Still, there are some valuable artifacts, like some suposedly formerly belonging to Antiochus III and plundered from the Seleucid camp; at least the Asiatici claim so before every guest, client and visitor. The atrium is decorated by a bronze statue of Apollus.

    CORNELII SCIPIONES ASIATICI

    Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiagene (IV)
    Patrician
    Ranks: Senator
    Current Office: N/A
    Age: 41
    Traits: +1 Battles, +3 Auctoritas, +2 Wealth

    Wife: Claudia of the Regulii.
Children: Cornelia (17), Lucius Cornelius Scipio Cinna (13, +1 Movement), Cornelia Secunda (0).

Great-grandson of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus (I), victor of Magnesia. Unfortunately, and despite their parentage, both Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiagene's (IV) father (III) and grandfather (II) were almost unremarkable, having only achieved a questorship and several minor offices. He is the last living descendant of Asiaticus and rose to certain prominence several years ago, when he took arms with several other members of the Senate against Lucius Appuleius Saturninus. He was elected praetor, being responsible for prosecuting Pinaria, one of Drusus' murderers. The aged senator married the young Claudia of the Regulii and adopted Lucius Cornelius Cinna one year later.

Quintus is thus led to the tablinium, superbly decorated with some frescoes depicting Apollo helping Admetus win Alcestis' hand. Lucius Cornelius greets the fellow senator with a warm smile and a extended arm:

"Ave, Quintus Caecilius, what brings you to my domus?"

Lucius extends his arm in greeting.

"Ave, Lucius. Lovely artwork you have here. I understand they are from Asia. Have you had a chance to visit that part of the world?" Quintus opens.

"Unfortunately no. My grandfather was in Bythinia, he brought a painter to make these"

His hand gestured towards the walls.

"My father once served in Asia as well. But I haven't had the pleasure yet, Quintus. Would love to"

Asiaticus pointed to a pair of elegantly carved chairs.

    "Sit, please, be my guest"

The senator clapped and a young slave arrives.

    "Bring some refreshments"

    Quintus took the offer chair.

"That's too bad. I was looking for information pertaining to dates grown in Asia. So I was hoping you could offer some information."

"Well, I do have clients in Asia itself, Quintus"

    Replied the senator.

"The name of my great-grandfather is still revered in those lands, and both my father and grandfather tried to preserve them. I have been unable to visit Asia itself however, too many things requiring my atention happened at Roma"

"Well I am looking at importing dates soon, and possibly growing them in Italy if the weather permits. If one of your Asian clients happens to have some leads, I would appreciate if you would put him in contact with me." Quintus says.

"Yes Rome is very busy." What requires most of your attention here?"

"It might work, but you would have to find a fitting terrain. Certainly, you would need good gromatici"

    He replied.

"We have many urban properties and a extensive web of clients in this very city, leaving for a prolongued time could have been... unwise. Also, I'm determined to run for Praetor this year, senator"

Specially considering his wealth had diminished greatly since his grandfather died, mainly by the absence of lucrative offices, like a pro-consulship.

The great-grandson of Asiaticus welcomed Cotta on his atrium.

"Luciu Aurelius Cotta, be welcome to my domus"

The golden Apollo witnessed Cotta's arrival, next to the door there was a bronze bust of the domus' owner. The senator himself was somehow less dashing than his bronze counterpart, but the portrait was accurate enough.

"I thank you, Scipio. How do you fare?" Cotta inquired, stepping into the home of his host, taking a moment to gaze upon the bronze bust of the Senator.

"Quite well, just recovered from a pneumonia that got me bedridden for months... until Vejovis considered it was due time I was freed from that burden"

He smiled. The walls were covered with the ancestors portraits. Several domestic slaves were ready to serve their master, including a large and blonde one, likely a Gaul.

"But, tell me Cotta, what brings you to my domus today?"

A letter arrives at the Domus Scipiones,

    Lectori Saluten,

Senator, I would like to invite you to this nights dinner in the domus Aemilius Lepidus for dinner and wine.

    Signed,
    Claudius Aemilius Lepidus.

"In truth, I have come to discuss a matter relating to family, more specifically, my son. He is in need of a wife, and I wondered if your noble family would consent to any such match." Cotta nodded with a smile, taking little note of the slaves.

    "Interesting... and unexpected"

    He scratched his well-shaven chin.

"I have a daughter, Cornelia, joy and delight of my days. Her mother died long ago, during childbirth like a true Roman matrona, and I never remarried. She is my sole daughter"

Scipio looked at a statue of a woman, likely his deceased wife.

"I would, indeed, consent to that match, but your son would have to bear my name alongside yours; for I would adopt him. That is my condition, senator"

    He stared at Cotta.

"Gens Aurelia is old and distinguished, a fitting match indeed... shall you comply to my terms"

Cotta raised his eyebrow. It was a unique request, though it was one that would surely enhance the prestige of his family, being the heirs of such an esteemed lineage.

"I accept, of course, Senator. It would be an honour to be joined in both blood and name with such an esteemed family."

"I'm glad you feel honored, senator"

    Replied Scipio.

"The wedding will be celebrated soon enough, Cotta. And thus, our lineages will be one and your son will inherit my fortune, shall Fate visit me before I can father a male son. Even in that case, my son-in-law shall have a share of my wealth"

    Interesting.

"I think that's a marvelous idea, Quintus. I'd be honored to run for office with yourself, senator"

And it would be more likely they'd get elected.

"Do you have any laws you wish to push forward this year?"
